Canadian Copyright Board allows
downloads, copyright levies
12/14/2003 12:27 PM
The
Copyright Board of Canada
issued a ruling on
" private
copying ", largely via peer-to-peer computing, with several
components. First, downloading is acceptable, but uploading is not
(presumably to target hyperpirates). Second, new mechanisms for
levies were described, freezing current ones, allowing new
charges.
the Copyright Board said uploading or distributing
copyrighted works online appeared to be prohibited under current
Canadian law.
However, the country's copyright law does allow making a copy for
personal use and does not address the source of that copy or whether
the original has to be an authorized or noninfringing version, the
board said.

One less worry in life
One less worry in life
02/01/2005 08:45 PMI'm an adult now and I have a home and savings and have all my
bills in check, but I can never forget what it was like being 18 with
my first bank account, back when using an ATM was like playing
roulette (and like any form of gambling, I walked away empty handed
more often than with any cash). So even though it's been ten years
since I've left an ATM empty handed, I can't get an irrational thought
out of my head every time I use an ATM: that I'm surprisingly and
suddenly dead broke. It's sort of an adult version of the "waking up
naked at the exam" nightmare I used to have in college.
Until now. I was poking around my small town credit union website
and discovered a new alert feature, where they send an email based on
your account activity. So I setup an automatic email that goes to my
cellphone's email address when the checking account is below a fairly
comfortable level. The feeling didn't leave immediately the next time
I used an ATM, but after I saw the feature work when a bunch of bills
went through, I now know that it is instantly wired to my bank
balance, even when I'm far from a computer.
A lot of stuff I've read about simplifying your life involves
removing all those little irrational worries that clog your thoughts
and keep you from getting things done and living happy. In addition to
this small thing, I've been to the dentist for the first time in years
and removed the other big irrational fear that my teeth would fall out
any day now. It's been nice to remove these worries from my life
forever, as I've got
a whole bunch of new worries lined up to deal with. :)

Now We Need To Worry About VoIP Spam
06/25/2004 12:11 PMWe're still trying to beat down spam, and people have been getting
increasingly worried about IM spam and SMS spam, and all of a sudden
one company is warning us that the rush to VoIP systems may lead to
VoIP spam. In other words, once VoIP is just an app
on the network, it shouldn't be all that difficult for someone to
write a script that would basically spam a voice message to millions
of VoIP systems. Of course, the company discussing this problem is
bringing it up because they've now patented a solution that they claim
will stop VoIP spam. All this really means is they've made clear the
technique that future VoIP spammers are now figuring out how to work
around.

Edinburgh Learns to Worry about Wi-Fi
02/11/2004 10:56 AMAnother entry in an endless series of "Wi-Fi security risk" articles,
this time from Edinburgh, Scotland: This article is only slightly
sensational, which might result from the reporter having heard these
claims for the first time about the risks of a wireless network. But
they're not too far off the mark. The biggest problem in articles that
cite the number of "open" access points, as a reader recently pointed
out to me, is that unless you connect to the point and probe, you
can't tell whether the gateway is inside or outside a firewall or has
other restrictions....

tp://www.usatoday.com/tech/news/2004-07-26-longevity_x.htmDan Koster, Web content manager for Queens University of
Charlotte in North Carolina, became a minor celebrity last spring when
he reported that 15-20% of the 2,000 CDs in his properly stored
collection suffered from what has loosely been called CD rot and would
no longer play. As people entrust more and more of their valuable
records -- everything from tax forms to family photos -- to digital
media, the idea that those reliable-looking CDs and DVDs could be,
well, less than reliable, is alarming. And history tells us that even
if the media hold up, the technology needed to retrieve the files may
not always be there. When was the last time you used a reel-to-reel
tape player? Accelerated aging tests conducted by the Library of
Congress and National Institute of Standards and Technology
demonstrate that the poorest-quality CDs may last only four or five
years; the best, more than 100. Consumers can hedge their bets by
keeping hard copy printouts of valuable documents and uploading photos
to online archiving services, but in the end, the simple truth is that
nothing lasts forever.

Don't Worry, Many In China Have No Clue
What IPv9 Is Either
07/06/2004 12:15 PMLast week, a variety of stories started appearing suggesting that
China was adopting a new internet protocol standard called IPv9.
While many in the press just went with the report, just about everyone
who knew anything about this were left scratching their heads
wondering just what the hell IPv9 was. It wouldn't be the first time
China decided to "go it alone" when it came to internet standards.
Recently there was a big international and diplomatic stink over
China's decision to use their very own, completely incompatible
WiFi
standard that had many WiFi equipment providers threatening to
completely ignore the huge Chinese market out of fear for their
intellectual property (which they would need to share with a Chinese
"partner" to help them build WAPI-compliant equipment). China is also
trying (with questionable success) to
go it alone
with their own 3G wireless standard, while the rest of the world
follows one of two standard upgrade paths. So, when the whole
concept of IPv9 started making news, it was easy to assume that
perhaps China had done it again. However, now reports are coming out
that, even in China,
ma
ny have no idea about IPv9 and suggest that it's really just a
concept being
pushed by one research group in China, rather
than any real adopted standard at this point.

Chinese Movie Industry Recognizes Movie
Watching Is A Social Experience
Chinese Movie Industry Recognizes Movie
Watching Is A Social Experience
03/22/2005 05:03 PMYesterday we noted that the MPAA and movie theater owners were
whini
ng about how much people coming in an taping movies was hurting
their business. The obvious response, we pointed out, is to recognize
that going to the movies is a
social experience. It's not just
about the content (though, that is important), but the overall
experience. If they improved that, then people would want to go --
even if they could score the same movie off the internet or a cheap
DVD bought off the street. While the folks in Hollywood refuse to
entertain this idea, someone (anonymously) in the comments to that
story pointed to an article in China noting that
this is exactly what Chinese movie theaters have done.
After years of declining attendance, they finally shaped up and made
going to the movies cool again. They improved the overall experience,
putting in better equipment and more comfortable seats. They improved
the sound and the lighting as well. It sounds like they also made
some theaters to be more like bars, to help attract young adults away
from traditional bars. Yet the supposedly "creative" movie people in
Hollywood insist "nothing can be done" to get people into the theater.

New Federal Budget Proposal
03/13/2003 12:58 PM “Class warfare
turns out to be alive,” Center director Robert Greenstein
commented. “It is a centerpiece of the Nussle budget, with deep
budget cuts that could harshly affect the poor, the vulnerable, and
many middle-class Americans, alongside lavish tax cuts for the
nation’s richest individuals. With this budget, we would be
marching down the path toward a new Gilded Age.”
“The Nussle budget serves one very useful purpose.” Greenstein
added. “It shows that these large tax cuts aren’t free, and that
at bottom, the issue is one of national priorities. This ought to
trigger a national debate. Are tax cuts averaging $90,000 a year for
millionaires so high a priority that we should cut health care
programs, increase the ranks of the uninsured, reduce the cost or
limit the availability of student loans, and increase hardship among
the disabled, poor children, and others to free up room for massive
tax cuts?”

Robotic mating proposal
Robotic mating proposal
03/28/2005 01:17 PMXeni Jardin:
Jason Striegel wrote an
interesting post for Hackaday about a proposed sexual evolution
mechanism for robots. He tells Boing Boing:
Using Lego Mindstorms, you can create simple robots that have the
ability to mate (swap a simple software genome) and evolve (random
chance of single point mutations). Mutations that make a robot unfit
for traversing its environment or unable to mate will effectively
drive it toward extinction as it cannot pass on its genes.
It's a pretty interesting experiment, as you can watch novel behaviors
emerge with each generation. Even more interesting are the possible
applications for an evolution based robotic platform. Two things that
immediately come to mind are sex-based software upgrade mechanisms for
distributed machines and distributed robot cultures that can adapt as
a group to be optimized for communication in an environment, rather
than being explicitly programmed for the task.
Now, I couldn't find any
specific reference to fembots with
gun-boobies in Jason's post, but any excuse to post this jpeg's a good
