No one UI fits all - anymore!
No one UI fits all - anymore!
05/26/2004 11:58 AMOne UI Does Not Fit All.
To see the full-screen trailers
of The Incredibles and Alexander, Apple is
making you use iTunes, rather than its QuickTime player. (It uses
QuickTime for the full screen version of Spider-Man II or Sky
Captain.) After you view the trailer with iTunes, you end up at the
iTunes store's new trailers section. However, most of the trailers
housed there drive you to QuickTime, rather than iTunes, as the media
player.
I don't believe that one UI fits all. Neither does Apple, usually.
There's good reasons that the UIs for QuickTime, iTunes, Safari, the
iPod, and OS X are different, and tuned to the functions and medium
they're focused on. A browser is about browsing and searching. It
accomodates viewing short media like music clips and trailers via
plug-ins just fine. Music lends itself to playlists, sorting by
artist, album, or genre, and, when portable, one-thumb scrolling and
manipulation. Etc., etc.
The iTunes video experience exposes some flaws of the single UI
approach. It's probably just an implementation glitch, but with
QuickTime you can skip ahead or back in the trailer; you can't with
iTunes. Tivo, who is very good at creating a TV UI, falls flat with
its music and photo features. Microsoft's
Media Center implementations - both portable and TV screen versions
- are similarly challenged, though Microsoft, for once, is not
crippling them with too many Windows conventions.

I don't believe that one UI fits all - either.
But this isn't necessarily what I meant.

Coke has received FCC approval for a GPS-equipped cellphone that fits

it to an operator who will tell them that they've already won an SUV.
The GPS then allows the Coke prize-patrol to home in on them and get a

Wi-Fi Fits Neatly into Truckers' Lives
05/06/2004 05:35 PMTruck stops could become the most unwired category of business in the
next 12 months: the market wants it: No one is guessing whether
truckers want Wi-Fi hotspots at truck stops. It's a done deal.
Truckers are typically also businessmen and -women and they use their
laptops on the road to deal with loads, pay bills, and keep in touch
with family. A hotspot means not having to leave one's truck and tote
a laptop, increasing security and ease. Thousands of truck stops will
have Wi-Fi by this time next year. The annual rates of $200 to $250
for unlimited access means that there's money to be made in assuring
loyalty. A trucker will travel another 30 miles to use their Wi-Fi
(just read this article), meaning that the right price and the right
ubiquity could translate to thousands of dollars of additional gas and
food sales per Wi-Fi user....

Electronic bugle implant makes
it so you don't have to learn the instrument in order "play" it.
The device ... slides snugly deep into the bugle's bell.
The device plays a high-quality recorded version of
“Taps,” taken from the 1999 Memorial Day service at
Arlington National Cemetery. The resonating tones inside the bugle
create a realistic horn quality.
And here's a related
article:
"Facing critical shortage of musicians for military
funerals, the Pentagon has approved the use of a push-button bugle
that plays taps by itself as the player holds it to his lips"
..."With a small digital recording devise inserted into each
bugle's bell, a member of the honor guard at the funeral simply
presses a button on the devise. A five-second delay give the guards
time to raise the instrument to their lips as if they are going to
play it"

the discussions I had there and the friends I made have had a profound

Incredibly, twenty years of living online have sped by
since the Whole Earth 'Lectronic Link opened to members on April 1,
1985. Twenty years is a milestone in the life of any group or town. A
full generation of WELLbeings have changed and been changed by
extraordinary experiences together here. Serious celebration is in
order through the month of April! WELL members past, present and
