Force Companies To Give Free Tech
Support For Life

Force Companies To Give Free Tech
Support For Life
12/22/2003 12:42 PM
Last week we talked about one idea to improve computer security issues: threa ten to put executives of software companies in jail if their products are not secure. That seemed a bit extreme. This week, however, the Washington Post's Rob Pegoraro has another interesting idea to improve technology product quality: require companies to provide free tech support for life. This way, he argues, the companies will quickly learn about problems, and it will be in their own best interest to get working fixes out there as quickly as possible. It will also give them incentive to do things better the first time around. He argues this is beneficial to the companies as well, as with better products, people will be more willing to spend money on them. I would add one adjustment to this suggestion: make an exception for companies or individuals who give away software for free. This would make it so anyone shopping for software can get a real benefit for paying for a product, and also doesn't unfairly burden those who prefer to just give away software.

Google Adds Keyhole Satellite Support

Google Adds Keyhole Satellite Support 04/05/2005 02:37 AM
Just when you thought they were out of ingenious ideas, Google has just enabled Keyhole Satellite support for its popular 'Maps' and 'Local' services. The system allows you to zoom in on almost any spot in North America, and seamlessly transfer between a map or recent satellite view of the area.

"Have you ever wished you could see what someplace looked like before you got there? A house? A hotel? A freeway exit? We thought you might find it useful. Now when you type an address into Google Maps, you can click the 'Satellite' link and see a view of the area. You can zoom, move the view by dragging, and even resize the window just like the normal 'Maps' view. Looking for a new apartment or house? Type in an address you're considering, get a view from the air and, with a quick local search, find out if you can walk to your favorite Saturday morning cup of coffee."

Keyhole support will easily satisfy casual users who downloaded NASA WorldWind to see their house from space. Using Google Maps I was able to make out individual cars on the freeway, and even see my neighbor’s pool. (Slide and all) Performance is amazing considering the massive amount of data Google must have stored.

residential service
07/21/2004 09:16 AM
StarBand, which supplies satellite-based Internet access, announced on Tuesday a new tier of residential service that uses the company's StarBand 481 satellite modem. Previously, residential customers were limited to the StarBand 360 modem, which offers half the 100kbps upload speeds attainable by the 481. Customers who choose the new service also receive download speeds as fast as 500kbps, limited VPN capabilities, 10 free e-mail accounts, free basic Web hosting and a static IP address for an extra US$4.99 per month. Pricing is $699.99 for the complete hardware package, which includes the satellite dish and modem, and a one-year contract with a $89.99 per month fee or a three-year contract that drops to $79.99 per month in the second year and $69.99 per month in the third year. As MacCentral posted this article, StarBand had not yet updated its Web site with the new residential plan.
