Wireless Broadband In Action

Wireless Broadband In Action 09/15/2004 01:39 PM
Some folks from Mobile Pipeline have been out and about in North Carolina testing Nextel's wireless broadband test system using Flarion's FLASH-OFDM technology that generated so much attention earlier this year. The reviewers are quite impressed. They found it an adequate replacement for fixed broadband, but (more impressively) discovered it worked almost as well in motion, while driving around. Mobility is where the real power of wireless broadband will be - because it will let people do things that they simply can't do now. It's worth noting, of course, for all the talk about WiMax, the mobile WiMax standard is still a ways away, and all the initial deployments will only be focused on fixed offerings. Nextel, of course, still hasn't committed to Flarion, and is known to be testing a few other wireless broadband solutions as well (though, with less fanfare). However, no matter what technology (or technologies) you're betting on, it looks like real mobile wireless broadband is on the way.

New Broadband Wireless Initiatives

New Broadband Wireless Initiatives
Around the Globe
09/14/2004 02:51 PM
A few announcements have been made over the last couple of days about new broadband wireless deployments. Two come from Alvarion, including one where Telekom Serbia will build networks to support voice and data in suburban and rural Serbia. Closer to home, Alvarion also announced that its gear will supply a broadband wireless backbone network in Maryland, connecting counties that are part of a project connecting libraries and supplying mobile wireless for public safety workers. In other broadband wireless news, Redline said that its equipment will provide backhaul for a wireless network being built in a region of Manitoba, Canada. Wi-LAN, a Calgary, Canada-based supplier, said that its products are being used by various customers, including a large ISP, in Malaysia. AirRover Wi-Fi, a company based in Baton Rouge, La., signed an agreement in principal to build city-wide mesh Wi-Fi networks in a couple of cities in the Philippines. It must be refreshing for vendors to be making these kinds of sales, even before they are actually selling certified WiMax gear. There has been a fear that customers would delay buying decisions as they wait for certified WiMax gear. Perhaps the buzz around WiMax has generally helped to legitimatize broadband wireless so that some customers decide it will pay off for them to deploy now rather than wait for standard gear....

Sweden to Get Broadband Wireless Network

Sweden to Get Broadband Wireless Network 08/27/2004 01:31 PM
Using EU funds, TeliaSonera will help build a broadband wireless network in a region of Sweden that is without broadband access: The network will be built with so-called "pre-WiMax" equipment, or gear that hasn't been certified WiMax but may receive certification once that process begins. This is precisely the type of network that many experts say WiMax is ideal for--covering remote areas that aren't served by wired broadband. Ultimately, such networks could be built in developing nations but initially the networks and products may not be inexpensive enough to serve such markets....

Business case for broadband wireless access (BWA) technologies requires mobility to get beyond low-margin fixed Internet access. Broadband wireless technologies forced to compete in the same space as 3G to avoid being marginalised as niche fixed access solutions. Systems available now from Flarion, IPWireless and ArrayComm all offer mobility and will be joined by WiMAX (802.16) and MobileFi (802.20). Vendors still face big challenges in selling to mobile operators as a result of unsubstantiated performance and costs, lack of integration with cellular base stations and limited availability of spectrum. Early commercial business models are delivering only one percent of the revenue per Mbyte of traditional cellular voice and messaging services. WiMAX and MobileFi must learn from early propositions to define winning service propositions and operator business models. Report assesses the true capabilities of, and prospects for, a range of alternative mobile wireless technologies. [PRWEB Dec 16, 2004]

Wi-LAN said that China Telecom is using its gear to deploy a broadband wireless network in Tianjin: China Telecom will use unlicensed frequencies and looks at this deployment as a test before potentially building similar networks in other regions. The point-to-multipoint network can be used to supply data and voice. Wi-LAN uses proprietary technology based on OFDM but says it's the same technology that makes up the 802.16 standard. That standard is backed by the WiMAX Forum, which hasn't started certifying products yet. The press release doesn't seem to be online yet but may be available here eventually....
