Juice Boost Scam Keeps Growing And
Growing...
08/17/2004 05:02 PMA couple weeks ago we had the story about the
not
really free, not really broadband, free broadband scam from a
company named Juice Boost. Broadband Reports has an update today
about how the
scam/joke/pyrami
d scheme/something is taking on an incredible life of its own.
The scam, of course, involves some sort of non-existent accelerator
software and claims that even the most non-tech-savvy individual
should realize are completely made up (free broadband connections over
telephone lines and a regular modem that never go down and they'll pay
you if you receive a spam message or if the connection drops among
other, equally ridiculous claims). Looking for any kind of details on
the company turn up nothing but more affiliates (some of whom have
even sent out press releases or promises of
bars of silver if
you sign up). The problem, of course, is that they're promising
affiliates lots of cash for signing up more people (limited to the
first... oh, 80 million) so the affiliate spammers are coming out of
the woodwork taking the ridiculous promises of Juice and "boosting"
them even higher. Hopefully, this is all just a demonstration of how
ridiculous most affiliate programs are, but that seems unlikely.

The "Constant fiddling with Linux" myth
01/03/2005 02:22 PMI hear this canard over and over: that it takes constant attention to
make a Linux installation work right, which means the cost of
administering a Linux system is higher than maintaining one running a
proprietary operating system. While it's true that you can spend
almost every waking hour tweaking a Linux server, network or desktop,
most Linux users don't need to do this any more than most car owners
need to adjust their tire pressure to meet the demands of every road
surface they encounter in the course of a day's driving.

Growing a car
Growing a car
12/05/2003 07:50 PMInteresting piece in VentureBlog about job loss in the US. Since 1995,
two million Americans have lost jobs in the manufacturing industry.
Those jobs didn't go overseas, though. China lost 16 million
manufacturing jobs in the same period.
Economically, trade is no different than other
technologies. Economist David Friedman of Santa Clara University puts
it most succinctly: there are two ways to make a car -- you can either
make it in Detroit or grow it in Iowa. You already know how to make it
in Detroit. You get a bunch of iron ore, smelt it into steel, and have
an assembly line of robots and workers shape it into a finished
vehicle.
To grow it in Iowa, you plant car seeds in the ground (also known as
"wheat"), wait until they sprout, and harvest them. Take the harvest
and put it into a big boat marked "to Japan" and let it sail off. A
few months later a brand new car comes back.

How Microsoft Can Keep Growing
How Microsoft Can Keep Growing
07/22/2004 09:40 AMEven after its huge dividend payout, Gates & Co. still have plenty in
the till to fund expansion, especially through acquisitions.
Microsoft's announcement on July 20 that it will distribute a large
chunk of its cash hoard to shareholders makes it look like the
software giant has finally accepted that it's a mature company. After
all, it will spend an astonishing $75 billion over the next four years
on dividends and stock buybacks -- instead of investing that money in
new growth opportunities. Investors will be able to count on Microsoft
(MSFT ) as a steady profit earner and source of dividend income --
much like a regulated monopoly.
