07/21/2004 07:19 AM
Red Rock Software has released a free update to its data analysis, charting and graphing software, DeltaGraph 5.5. The upgrade adds the ability to publish charts and graphs on a Web site and update them as new data is received. DeltaGraph 5.5 automates the entire process with an AppleScript that extracts data from any database with the ability to export delimited text files, creates charts or graphs and posts them to the Web in a user-specified format. When the data changes, the user runs the AppleScript again. The software requires Mac OS X v10.1.5 or higher, 128MB RAM and 60MB hard drive space, with pricing for the full version at US$199 for academic use and $299 for commercial use.

Styling RDF Graphs with GSS

Styling RDF Graphs with GSS 12/03/2003 07:19 PM
Visualising RDF graphs is a hard problem, as they can quickly become unwieldy. This article introduces a solution in the form off GSS (Graph Style Sheets), an RDF vocabulary for describing rule-based style sheets used to modify the visual representation of RDF models represented as node-link diagrams.

Generating Perl graphs with GD::Graph

Generating Perl graphs with GD::Graph 04/13/2004 11:22 AM
Perl's GD::Graph module is a tool that allows a software developer to quickly and easily generate graphical representations of data. Originally written by Martien Verbruggen in 1995, the package has matured into a very flexible and popular tool. It is ideally suited to any situation where a dynamic data set, from a database or elsewhere, needs to be fetched and represented on the fly. It is widely used in corporate intranets, where many a webmaster has used it to generate graphs that show data in exactly the format management likes.

Mad About Colors

Mad About Colors 01/07/2004 04:34 PM

Marc's post about Behr Paint's wonderful Lazlo-based color picker application reminded me that I needed a color picker myself so I went shopping for one this afternoon.

I have a healthy respect for the power of colors but my color-sense is one-directional: I can go from colors to judgement but not the other way.  That is, I can't say “I want some nice professional set of colors for these set of web pages” and then come up with one.  Thankfully, there are programs to help me.  Most of them are appropriately priced pathetic sharewares, but I found a couple that looked good: ColorImpact 2 and Color Wheel Pro 2.

After trying both, I found Color Wheel Pro 2 to be the better of the two.  Lucky for me, it even costs less than the other one.  Nice.

Update:

Found another nice website that explains colors in a pleasant way: handprint.

Apple Shows Some Mean Colors

Apple Shows Some Mean Colors 07/29/2004 11:26 AM
  • CNN: Apple: RealNetworks hacked iPod. Apple Computer accused RealNetworks Thursday of adopting the tactics of a hacker and breaking into the technology behind its popular music player iPod device.
  • So Apple is happy to let you play your music only in the way it permits, if you're going to use its devices. The company says it'll rewrite its software to thwart Real's customer-friendly hack -- and I use that word in the benevolent sense -- that lets people use what they've bought with just a bit more freedom than Apple wishes to grant. Threats to use copyright law against Real are exactly what you'd expect, unfortunately. Apple wants control over online music, and this is just part of the game. What we customers want is cross-platform compatibility: standards. What the companies want is lock-in. They may win, but they're only locking me out -- because I won't play by those rules. Which means I've bought my last iTunes Music Store song until Apple starts paying more attention to what its customers want.

Olympus m:robe 100 in Two New Colors

Olympus m:robe 100 in Two New Colors 04/14/2005 10:03 AM

mrobe_2col.jpgOlympus is offering two new colors of their m:robe MR-100 MP3 player—sort of. The front of the device is still the Knight-Rider-like red-on-black (of which, I must say, I am a fan). The back of the current models is white, but the new models will be available with backs in light pink and light blue. It's like those videos I used to stare at when I was a kid, where the cover girl was a studious bookworm by day but a crime-fighting whore at night. I may be getting some of the plot-points confused.

No idea if we'll get these models in America. I guess it depends on how well the MR-100 is selling, which is hard to augur considering Olympus misguidedly put all their marketting muscle into the MR-500.

Alien Planets Tell Tales With Colors

Alien Planets Tell Tales With Colors 03/23/2005 07:57 PM

Two teams of Astronomers this week discovered the color of two planets by using infrared radiation. This break-through will allow experts to discover what the planet’s surface or atmosphere are made of. This is a major finding. According to Astronomy Magazine,
    Planet's Color

Charbonneau's group used the Spitzer Space Telescope's Infrared Array Camera to home in on the light from TrES-1, a "hot Jupiter" zipping around a Sun-like star about 500 light-years from Earth in the constellation Lyra. The astronomers tracked the intensity of two infrared "colors" as the planet passed behind its star, an event called secondary eclipse. The team subtracted the star's radiation from the total seen when the planet was not eclipsed by the star. Measuring the gas giant's infrared radiation allowed the team to calculate its temperature — a sizzling 1,450° F (1,060 kelvins). Charbonneau suspects his group has also found the spectral fingerprint of carbon monoxide in the planet's atmosphere, but, he says, "We're going to go back and get more data."

Making colors safe for Windows and Mac

Making colors safe for Windows and Mac 08/28/2004 11:08 AM
In a curious filing dated Aug. 26, Apple has applied for a patent detailing a "Color palette providing cross-platform consistency." According to the patent’s abstract, the palette looks to work in conjunction with an existing application to "facilitate user selection of web-safe colors." The images attached to the filing show an OS-9 interface with what looks to be a Photoshop 5-type color window. Colors are eventually arranged into groups of "Non web-safe" and "Web-safe" colors for Windows and Macintosh: "In laying out the color palette, the extent of achromatic colors located within the color palette is determined. The achromatic colors are then arranged in one group on the palette, for instance in order of lightest to darkest. The non web-safe chromatic colors are then grouped together. From this grouping blends of the colors are created. Finally, the web-safe chromatic colors are grouped together. Blends with respect to the web-safe chromatic colors are created and then grouped on the color palette.” While it seems to be a relatively outdated concept (with outdated diagrams), Apple has yet to incorporate this specific technology in one of its applications.
