CNet, among other
places, is reporting that Microsoft is releasing a beta version of
Windows Media Player 10 for public testing. Although leaked copies of
the software have been available for the last week or so, the official
release will allow everyone a chance to play with the new features,
such as enhanced synchronization methods that keep some of the newer,
more full-featured media players full of not only audio, but video and
pictures, as well. And from this screenshot, it appears that Microsoft
is adopting the Rip and Burn terminology that pretty much everyone
else does. I've resisted upgrading even to 9, so far, and will
probably refrain from 10, as well. I only use it to play movies, and
I'm finding myself using Media Player Classic more and more.

Suprnova.org is back... with a

Suprnova.org is back... with a
vengeance?! It was just last week when suprnova.org, the most
popular site online for finding BitTorrent downloads,
shut down their site. The MPAA and RIAA crowed,
but it appears the celebration was a tad premature.
Suprnova's new site mentions
a special
announcement tomorrow at 9 PM GMT on
NovaStream.org radio.
Rumors suggest that it will introduce
Exeem,
a decentralized, BitTorrent-driven software client that turns every
user into a tracker, removing the requirement for a centralized site
such as suprnova, while providing users with easy searchability, the
swarming powers of
BitTorrent, and a network that is far harder to shut down.

Nvidia SLI, SLI's back with a vengeance
06/28/2004 11:51 AMI'm sure many of you can remember the days of 3dfx, the first Voodoo
Graphics back in 1996 and about a year later the introduction of the
Voodoo2. Voodoo2 actually made sure that 3dfx reigned supreme for
quite some time as two cards could be combined in something called an
SLI, Scan Line Interleave, configuration. Each card rendered half of
the image scan lines which resulted in double the performance of a
single board and the ability to play OpenGL games such as Quake 2 in a
1024x768 resolution. To date no manufacturer has come up with a
similar concept simply because modern graphics accelerators are all
AGP based, there's no dual AGP motherboards and PCI simply doesn't
have the bandwidth to handle modern graphics accelerators. With the
arrival of PCI-E things have changed though, a number of workstations
motherboards featuring the Tumwater chipset will have dual PCI-E-x16
slots making dual graphics accelerators a possibility again. Nvidia
steps up to the plate today with the re-introduction of the SLI
concept on the GeForce 6800 series, again using the SLI moniker but
now with a different approach to the same principles that made Voodoo2
SLI a huge success.

More Tribes Go Wireless
04/29/2004 05:54 PMMuniWireless reports that a tribe in Southern California is using
broadband wireless to link 18 tribal communities: HP donated a bunch
of gear for the network and the tribe is using solar-powered antennas.
In addition to the educational benefits to such a network, tribal
members are using the access to keep on top of and apply for federal
grants. We've linked to other stories about tribes around the country
using wireless to bring Internet access to reservations. In most of
these cases, the incumbent operators weren't interested in serving the
communities, which are often remote and sparsely populated. But the
growth of Wi-Fi has driven down the cost of some equipment such that
it's possible for these communities to build their own networks. Many
of these tribes aren't looking to the Internet for entertainment but
as a way to improve the educational and employment opportunities for
residents....

Halo 2 vs. Tribes 2
Halo 2 vs. Tribes 2
12/22/2004 01:03 AMI went to visit my brother in Colorado over the weekend, and he had
a copy of Halo 2 with
an X-Box Live subscription. I didn't get to play it, but I watched
him quite a bit.
X-Box Live is hailed as the big thing that propels Halo 2 into gaming
infamy. However, in watching my brother play, I was struck by how
much it looked like a similar, older game: Tribes. It was perhaps more
graphically advanced than Tribes, but it didn't look much better than
Tribes 2.
Gameplay dynamics seemed pretty much the same. My brother was
amazed at the idea of playing people from around the world in a giant
game of capture the flag, but I just couldn't kick the thought that I
had seen this all before.
Is there anyone who has played both Halo 2 and Tribes 2 that can
comment on how similar they are or which is better? Is Halo 2
that good, or is it just Tribes 2 for the console-playing
masses? (The flame doors have just swung open...)

now
03/08/2004 11:26 PMIt's official. As of today - all Tribe Tribes will feature RSS output of
their message
boards.
Sure other message boards output RSS, but no other message boards
in social networks. It's putting all this technology into an
integrated context that matters.
Old school means separate data silos. New school means
integration, aggregation and appropriate levels of
customization. That's what digital lifestyle aggregators are all about.
Meanwhile - this is not the ONLY open standard Tribe will be
supporting. Watch for FOAF and Jabber (XMPP) support - soon enough. In
the mean time - congrats to Paul, Bryan and the rest of the
Tribe team. Now we gotta get all those Tribesters to start
using RSS aggregators!

Lost Tribes of Israel on Every Continent
Lost Tribes of Israel on Every Continent
01/07/2004 03:37 PMTudor Parfitt, an English academic, schlepped all over southern
Africa trying to figure out whether or not the Lemba people were, as
some of them claimed, in fact Jews. He wrote up his travels,
circa 1990, in Jo
urney to the Vanished City. This was no easy task due
to the fact that the Lemba have been illiterate for many
centuries (if not forever) and therefore all of their
history had to be obtained in person-to-person interviews. There
are some parallels between the situation with the Lemba in Africa and
the Indians and Mormons in the U.S. According to the book,
southern Africa was never inhabited by literate people and for the
most part never inhabited by people who built any buildings more
substantial than a grass hut. When whites came to southern
Africa they encountered tribes living in grass huts but also an
extensive ruined stone city called "Great Zimbabwe". They didn't
want to believe that ancestors of the blacks whom they were oppressing
had been capable of advanced civilization and therefore a popular
explanation was that people from the Middle East had come down to
southern Africa at some point, built Great Zimbabwe, and left.
The theory made some sense in that Arab slave traders had been
operating up and down Africa's east coast for many centuries and had
colonized substantial parts of the Horn of Africa.
Where's the parallel with the U.S.? There are massive
ceremonial centers built of earth in the Ohio River Valley and up and
down the Mississippi (Cahokia, Illinois being the largest).
Europeans displacing American Indians did not want to believe that the
people whom they were pushing aside had ever been capable of
much.Various theories were promulgated in the early 1800s as to who
might have built these impressive structures. The Book of
Mormon is an explanation that posits immigrants from the
Middle East (tribes of Israel in fact).
The book is interesting as a travel adventure and it is also
interesting as a reflection of attitudes about the country of Zimbabwe
circa 1990. A black South African university professor is
quoted:
"I don't think the Africans are a vengeful people. Look what
happened in Zimbabwe. The whites always said there would be a
blood-bath if the blacks won the war, but not so. ... If
redemption and peace can come to Rhodesia after years of one of the
bloodiest wars, it can come here."
[Oh yes... the Lemba. If you don't want to read the
book it turns out that DNA studies carried out in the late 1990s
indicate that they have some Middle Eastern blood. Their oral
history points to an origin in present-day Yemen. There were
Jews in Yemen until they were pushed out by Arab riots in
1948 (they took refuge in Israel, some of them men
with two wives, thus becoming some of Israel's only legal
polygamists).Of course there were Arabs in Yemen. The handful of
Lemba traditions that are Middle Eastern could be either Muslim or
Jewish. So the question remains open...]

Indigenous tribes at risk of extinction

Xeni Jardin:
Some of the indigenous ethnic communities on Andaman and Nicobar
islands could be on the verge of extinction after the tsunami
disaster.
The remote cluster of more than 550 islands, of which only about three
dozen are inhabited, is home to six tribes of Mongoloid and African
origin who have lived there for thousands of years. Many of these
tribal people are semi-nomadic and subsist on hunting with spears,
bows and arrows, and by fishing and gathering fruit and roots. They
still cover themselves with tree bark or leaves.
"They are a vital link to our prehistoric past. If they are lost,
India and the world lose a bit of their glorious heterogeneity," said
Ajoy Bagchi, executive director of the People's Commission on
Environment and Development, India, which has worked with tribal
groups in the region for years.
"Even a small loss in any of these groups, barring the more numerous
Nicobarese, could seriously endanger their survival. We need to
immediately do a count on how many of them are alive."
