Jakks TV Games Atari Paddle Reviewed

Jakks TV Games Atari Paddle Reviewed 09/01/2004 01:19 PM

paddle_main_02.jpg imageI like these all-in-one TV games systems as much as the next guy - I think they're a neat throwback to the pixels of yore, and they price is right - but kept wondering why they were releasing them without the ability for two people to play at the same time. So many of these great old games were best played when screaming at a friend, trying to distract them long enough to surreptitiously wiggle their joystick cable just loose enough from the console to make their paddle go dead. The new Jakks TV Atari Paddle goes one better - you can actually disconnect Player Two right from Player One's paddle. It's a great new feature, but one that they for some reason neglect to mention in this TIME Magazine review.

Gambling Machines Much Safer Than
Electronic Voting Machines

Gambling Machines Much Safer Than
Electronic Voting Machines
06/14/2004 03:33 AM
It appears that making sure gambling is fair is much more important than making sure our elections are fair. One of the defenses pulled out by those who want to keep going with existing electronic voting machines is that no one seems to complain about electronic gambling machines. Perhaps that's because electronic gambling machines are held to a much higher standard than electronic voting machines. This NY Times editorial lists six different ways in which gambling machines in Nevada are under much more scrutiny than electronic voting machines. These include things like the fact that the state requires copies of the source code of all electronic gambling software, as well as their stringent licensing procedure for any company that wishes to sell electronic gambling machines. Employees of any such company have to go through background checks to make sure they have no criminal record. Considering that Diebold had convict ed felons involved with their electronic voting systems - you wonder if a similar licensing procedure might make sense for voting machines as well.

Atari, EA, VUG Sue as One

Atari, EA, VUG Sue as One 06/15/2004 04:43 PM

Well, here we are again: media makers suing a company that makes a product that bypasses copy protection. The latest go-round is between the game publishers mentioned above and 321 Studios, makers of Games X Copy, which does guess what.

Since everyone has heard this song and dance before, I'll spare the proselytizing and tell the publishers that they're still wrong, and that this kind of software still has a legal use— just like the computers, monitors, CD-ROM drives and hard drives that have legal uses and are just as complicit as the Games X Copy software when used illegally.

Not that I want publishers to suffer from piracy, just that I'd wish they'd give their lawyers something better to do than beat a dead horse. Maybe like forming a dance team, or building a soup kitchen to feed their developers.

Atari Goes For The Nostalgia Market...
Again
09/07/2004 04:07 PM
Acclaim may have gone out of business, but (what's now called) Atari is still trying to keep on ticking. However, they seem to be focusing on hyping up re-released versions of games from their glory days decades ago, appealing to everyone's nostalgia for those blocky games of yesteryear. They're releasing new versions for modern consoles, and a "miniaturized" version of the old Atari 7800 with 20 games built in. Of course, if this sounds familiar, that's because it is. The entity that is now called Atari has been trying to live off the nostalgia market for years, as that seems to be about all they have.

The Atari Landfill Rumor

The Atari Landfill Rumor 03/22/2005 04:31 PM

Five Million E.T. Pieces: I missed this link in my prior post about The Video Game Crash of 1983. It's a great look at what happened to Atari in the early 80's. It ends by confirming the rumor that millions of game cartridges ended up in a landfill somewhere.

[...] Atari, stuck with millions of games and consoles that were largely unsellable at any price, sent fourteen truckloads of merchandise from their plant in El Paso, Texas, to be dumped in a city landfill in Alamogordo, New Mexico in late September 1983. In order to keep the site from being looted, steamrollers crushed and flattened the games, and a concrete slab was poured over the remains.

Why would someone "loot" old E.T. cartridges? I think Atari was just afraid of a picture of all those cartridges ending up in a newspaper somewhere.

Panasonic Minicompos With SD Slot

Panasonic Minicompos With SD Slot 03/19/2005 02:45 AM

panasonic_minicompo.jpg imageAlso introduced by Panasonic yesterday were the "SC-PM910DVD" and "SC-PM710SD" minicomponent systems, both supporting a variety of audio formats on a variety of mediums. Each has a 5-CD changer, MD deck, cassette deck, radio tuner, and for the first time in the world, SD card slot. Panasonic has gone to extra lengths to make sure you take advantage of this slot as well; you can play and record audio files from (or to) the inserted card. The units are capable of playing MP3 and WMA files from CDs, and can play those same formats as well as AAC from SD cards. The PM910DVD adds DVD-Video support too, but it's not as if you'll be using such a feature outside of Japan.
