Online Resume Rules Sound Like Offline
Resume Rules
09/13/2004 02:14 PM
USA Today is claiming that the rules have changed for resumes, now that they're mostly sent via email instead of snail mail. However, when they get into the details, they sound amazingly like the "rules" many of us learned back in the days before you emailed resumes: focus on results from previous jobs (read: throw in lots of useless percentages to make it look like you improved something), use "descriptive or significant terms" (read: make sure you include the BS buzzwords-of-the-moment to make it through that first pass filter), don't send the wrong cover letter to the wrong company (read: don't be completely stupid), and don't apply "above your skill level" (read: don't waste HR's time so much). I remember hearing all of these years ago as well, and they don't seem any different in this "new age of electronic resumes" as the article would have you believe. Then, of course, there's the biggest recommendation for this supposed new age: they suggest you spam as many companies as possible. Again, has there ever been a time when people were told to send out fewer resumes? If anything, it seems like this strategy is the wrong strategy in the digital age where HR folks are so inundated with resumes that some have found that going back to paper resumes is much more effective in getting attention.

OPML, Book Authors

OPML, Book Authors 10/28/2003 11:07 PM

Just got back from a meeting with a bunch of book authors, here for the publishers' summit.  They're all under NDA, of course, but sometimes I am still surprised at how much some of these people know.  Robert Scoble is organizing a bloggers /authors dinner at Crossroads tonight, which I'll also be attending.

~

In other news, I finally admitted defeat in my effort to manually track all of the MSFT bloggers.  You will notice that my link on the left now points to an OPML file instead.  There are well over a hundred, and it was getting too difficult to keep up with it.  Now I can just maintain the OPML file, visitors to the site can import it to their news aggregators automatically, and it has an attached XSLT so that it renders nicely in the browser if you view it from my site.  I started with an OPML file that Benjamin Voigt kindly constructed for me, then merged with the OPML file from blogs.gotdotnet.com.  Strangely enough, I was still missing quite a few names after doing this (for example, Mark Fussell and Arpan Desai did not show up on the gotdotnet OPML, even though their blogs are hosted by gotdotnet; and Dare Obasanjo was not on Benjamin's list).  I suspect that there are at least 20 more MSFT blogs that I am missing, but this should be the most complete list available.

Note that the OPML file is rendered using the stylesheet at /blog/blogOpml.xslt, which is a ridiculously simple XSLT you can modify any way you like.  I would like to modify it to sort the blogs by most recent update, but really would rather not do that using XSLT.

Identifying authors in feeds

Identifying authors in feeds 08/22/2004 07:16 PM

I have been doing my blog reading and writing primarily with Net News Wire for my reading and Ecto for my writing. A simply copy paste will paste html which is a very good start for a blog post. The biggest problem is the multi-author blogs. I bugged Boing Boing about it, and they put the name of the author in the text, even though it was already in their creator tag. This makes it much easier for me because the name of the author is in the html when I copy from Net News Wire. So Brent, and other news reader developers... I have a feature request if you haven't done it already. Can you please figure out an easy way to allow me to copy the name of the author and view the name of the author in the post? Also, for people working on syndication formats, keep in mind that in the case of group blogs, the author is important and I think some of the templates don't automatically add the authors.
