spam-filters
12/02/2003 07:37 AMBayesian anti-spam filters count word-frequency in suspect and compare
the results to profiles of word-frequency in spam and ham. Defeating
this requires that your spam include a lot of natural human prose. So
spammers have started to mine the Gutenberg Project and other sources
of human-generated ASCII and dumping random hunks of literature into
their messages to get around the filters.
Blogger and journalist Clive Thompson found an excerpt from Chapter 20
of The Master Key by Wizard of Oz author L Frank Baum in a message
that had as its subject line "the big unit" (no prizes for guessing
what the rest of it was hawking).

The postman always texts twice: shag
phones
06/13/2004 12:56 AMDisposable mobiles purchased specifically for the purpose of illicit
sexual liasons. A Boingboing pal in the UK says reports of this odd
social trend are legit -- throwaway phones allow sekrit lovers to
communicate by SMS or voice, on the downlow. Snip from the blog where
I first read the phrase "shag phone":
I heard someone (honest) talking about their "shag phone" the other
day. He was a married man having an affair with a lady who was also
married. It seems that one of the first heady rituals of the affair
was to purchase a "his and her" pair of Pre-pay shag phones.
Only they knew each other's number, so when the phone rang, they could
answer in an appropriately passionate way. While much the same effect
could be achieved with caller recognition (assuming they were mobile
literate), there was more than just a romantic gesture involved with
this behavior. Technology still can't hide your phone bill from a
suspicious spouse. And it can't hide your amour's frequently dialed
number from prying eyes. Better to get a pair pre-pay phones with no
incriminating phone bills or records. A small example of how the
mobile is impacting on 21st century life.

htmlDeveloped at University College Cork, the Corpus
of Electronic Texts project is intended "to bring the wealth of Irish
literary and historical culture (in Irish, Latin, Anglo-Norman French,
and English) to the Internet in a rigorously scholarly project."
Additionally, the project is designed to be utilized by a wide group
of interested parties, including students, academics, and the general
public. Visitors may peruse the documents by language of original
publication, or by viewing a complete list of all the works currently
available (many in HTML or pdf format) from the project's website.
Some of the rather compelling works available here include the
complete works of Oscar Wilde, the political writings of Michael
Collins, and various historical documents regarding the struggle for
Irish independence. [From The Scout Report, Copyright Internet Scout

The Songs of Bilitis
The Songs of Bilitis
12/02/2003 02:39 PM The Songs of
Bilitis. 'First published in Paris in 1894, this purports to be
translations of poems by a woman named Bilitis, a contemporary and
acquaintance of Sappho. This caused a sensation, not only because
finding an intact cache of poems from a completely unknown Greek poet
circa 600 B.C. would be a miracle, but because of its open and
sensitive exploration of lesbian eroticism. Actually Bilitis never
existed. The poems were a clever forgery by Pierre Louÿs--the
"translator"; to lend weight, he had even included a
bibliography with bogus supporting works ... '

03/22/2005 03:58 PM
Prometheus QoS (Quality of Service) is an ISP-oriented tool for easy
manipulation of the IP traffic shaping and
sharing features of the Linux kernel.
It generates multiple nested HTB traffic control classes with
fine-grained rate and ceiling values and implements
optional daily (or simply periodical) data transfer quotas and data
transfer statistics (as HTML). It is compatible with NAT (both
asymmetric and symmetric), yet still provides good two-way shaping and
prioritizing for both uploads and downloads.
Changes:
Transfer of unused data limit from a previous run
using a credit file is now supported. Support was
added for "soft fair use policy", which reduces
just HTB prio instead of HTB ceil. Some other
minor feature enhancements were made.

Those clever devils at Customized
Classics
Those clever devils at Customized
Classics
12/10/2003 04:20 PMWhen I first saw Customized
Classics a few weeks ago I felt like kicking myself. It's hard for
most people to understand what "public domain" really means, and what
value it can give us as a culture, and directly as capitalists and
entrepreneurs.
Project Gutenberg has recently
uploaded their 10,000th public domain book, and Brewster and the gang are working
on the "million book project". To demonstrate the potential of the
public domain, and show people what movies, music, and stories used to
be like when there was an active public domain (that at one time was
only 14 to 28 years old -- imagine making new movies and music from
60s stuff totally free of copyright), I've been kicking around ideas
of how to exploit these free works (again, for demonstration purposes
more than anything else).
One idea I called "judge a book by its cover." Take these public
domain classics, create exciting, artistic cover designs (perhaps by
famous designers), and sell them via the new crop of print-on-demand services. A few months ago there was
news of Oprah's book club coming back to life and only selecting
classics from the public domain, and how publishers would have to rush
to meet the demands, but how anyone could print them up.
I've been coming up with other ideas but nothing is as good as customized
classics. They just do a search-and-replace on names of your
choosing, and spit out a custom book to you for 25 bucks or so.
Brilliant and simple.
