I'm reading RSS feeds for the first time in over a day and just came across Yahoo Emerges From Dot-Com Gloom which seems to do a good job of summarizing the highs and lows from the last few years at Yahoo. Yeah, it's a bit dramatic in places ("After a mortifying two-year slump") but pretty good overall. Well, it was good right up until the end when I read this. Yahoo's early $10 million investment in Google is likely to...

Deeply Felt

Deeply Felt 06/05/2005 10:55 PM
Since I spent a good couple of months in 2002 editing John Dean's e-book "Unmasking Deep Throat," I had my own interest in today's news unveiling former FBI honcho Mark Felt as the original deep-background source for Woodward and Bernstein's Watergate reporting. But if this outcome felt anti-climactic, it's not just because the conclusions Dean so painstakingly reached -- among other things, that Deep Throat was almost certainly an attorney, and that he couldn't have been at the FBI -- were simply wrong (to be fair, it appears that the bobbing and weaving Woodward and Bernstein have done through the years. and Felt's own vehement disavowals, left a somewhat deceptive trail for the attentive sleuth). And it's not just because Felt has been the "most likely suspect" for over a decade now.

It's really because it marks the end of the mystery at the heart of the investigative-reporting act that inspired my generation of journalists. I was 15 years old in 1974; I listened to the Watergate hearings in the car radio every morning as I rode with my dad on the way to my summer job. I chose to become a journalist at perhaps the one moment in American history at which the public's trust in reporters was higher than its faith in political leaders. The naming of Deep Throat represents the final coda to this old story -- and reminds us of how much things have changed.

Meanwhile, the current generation of executive malfeasance awaits its comeuppance. Which public servant will step forward, in shadows, pseudonymously or not, to blow a loud whistle on this decade's lies? Or has the Deep Throat of the George Bush White House already fed his tips -- say, to Seymour Hersh -- but we're simply too fatalistically inured to the "disassembling" of our leaders to do anything about it?

GM in trouble: "If you erased the company name from the balance sheet and showed it to a forensic accountant, the recommended treatment would probably be to seek protection from creditors by filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. " GM's troubles are as much a result of the exploding costs of health care as they are due to the company's dropping market share. In Canada increasing health care costs (PDF with many charts) are taking a greater and greater share of government expenditures. In the US it's hurting big employers and regular people. But either way the problem doesn't seem likely to get better any time soon.

Unitarianism: good enough for two

The state of Texas has denied Unitarians tax-exempt religious status because the church "does not have one system of belief." As Julia notes, Presidents John Adams and John Quincy Adams were sufficiently convinced of the Unitarians' religiosity that they actually were Unitarians.
Never before -- not in this state or any other -- has a government agency denied Unitarians tax-exempt status because of the group's religious philosophy, church officials say. Strayhorn's ruling clearly infringes upon religious liberties, said Dan Althoff, board president for the Denison congregation that was rejected for tax exemption by the comptroller's office.

The Story Behind The Story Of The Google
IPO?

The Story Behind The Story Of The Google
IPO?
07/26/2004 12:14 PM
This morning, it seems like the big Wall Street tech story is the official release from Google about what they think they'll raise from their IPO. Looking over all the different coverage, it appears that many (especially in the financial press) seem to be getting the story a little mixed up. The basic facts seem to be that approximately 24.6 million shares will be put on the market with a range of $108 to $135 per share. As noted in the story, some seem to think that breaking $100 may prove to be a psychological barrier for many retail investors, even if the actual price per share is meaningless. Still, if the price is a psychological barrier, rather than a calculated decision, the investor probably shouldn't be buying anyway. A minimum bid from anyone must be for five shares, so anyone who wants in is spending over $500. The range is higher than expected, and could lead to a valuation pushing $40 billion. One analyst makes the bizarre statement that: "The question is not what the company is worth, but instead what people will pay for it," which misses the fairly simple, but important, point that the price people are willing to pay for the stock is what the company is worth. Meanwhile, many news articles are claiming that Google will raise $3.3 billion in the offering, which is not true at all (or at least, extremely unlikely). The details show that Google is likely to bring in about $1.66 billion (and possibly as high as $1.9 billion at the top of the range). That's because only 14.1 million of the 24.6 million shares are actually being sold by the company. The other 10.5 million are being sold by insiders. Now, that's a curious point that no one seems to be focusing on. While insiders do sometimes sell during an IPO, it generally doesn't look too good. While there are plenty of reasons (liquidity, liquidity, liquidity) that people might want to sell, usually insiders get locked up for a bit. It does happen, but in this case, an awful lot of that $3.3 billion (or whatever the amount actually is) isn't going to the company, but to others. The initial IPO filing tried to spin all this insider selling as a good thing, but that's pretty questionable. If people really believe in the stock, why are so many selling it at the very first chance they get? Doesn't inspire the most confidence in the world.
