Put that keyboard down!

Put that keyboard down! 04/15/2005 12:48 AM
John Darnielle writes about the fatally self-destructive temptation for artists to respond to bad reviews online:

...if you're smart, you'll realize that the best way to preserve your honor is to keep your mouth shut and let others share their opinions of your work. They don't like it? They hate it, and want to say so publicly? Well! Welcome to public life! If you don't like it, there are plenty of dishwashing jobs available! If you're all that angry, arrange for your label not to send them promos in the future. But pissing matches with the guy who wrote the review? Ones in which, God save us all, the dreaded "that's only your opinion!" last-gasp-of-a-defense card is played? Can we just not, please? Can we be a little more grown-up about things?

And while we're reading Mr. Mountain Goats, check out this posting which explains why the Mountain Goats are more like Bruce Springsteen than you ever imagined possible. (Via Largehearted Boy)

I hate my keyboard

I hate my keyboard 12/19/2004 03:20 PM

I hate my keyboard. I have been programming 60+ hours a week and my arms and wrists are killing me. I hate my keyboad, I REALLY hate my laptop keyboard. Way back in the day, Mark Hurst bought one of those three piece positional keyboards. After he left the company, I used it. It was ok and I got used to the Dvorak keyboard. I have since tried Dvorak on regular keyboards and I think it makes my wrists worse.

Also, why does an alternate layout kb cost over $200? Same plastic same circuits. Oh well. Maybe I'll create one for myself.

You can hit Alt+S on Microsoft Windows or Ctrl+S on Macintosh now to go right to the search box and type your search keyword. A similar shortcut with the letter "L" is also introduced on the manual pages to access the lookup input field. Thanks to Tommy Ipsen for the suggestion. You can read more about keyboard shortcuts on web pages in the HTML standard.

OS X Tip: Remapping keyboard shortcuts

OS X Tip: Remapping keyboard shortcuts 06/07/2004 11:48 PM

On my Mac, Apple+W is the shortcut for closing a window (or tab in a tabbed application such as Safari or Firefox) while Apple+Q quits the application completely. These keys are right next to each other on the keyboard. Today, for the final time, I hit the wrong key and accidentally sent a couple of days accumulation of useful browser windows straight in to the abyss. I say for the last time because my intended IRC rant about the stupidity of setting those two keys right next to each other was cut off by Richard Soderberg, who showed me how to remap keyboard shortcuts for any application in OS X.

  1. Bring up the Keyboard & Mouse preference pane.
  2. Hit the Keyboard Shortcuts tab.
  3. Click the + icon.
  4. Select Firefox from the Application menu.
  5. In the Menu Title box, enter the exact text "Quit Firefox".
  6. In the Keyboard Shortcut box, enter a new shortcut (crysflame suggested Option-Apple-Q).
  7. Click Add.

You'll need to restart Firefox to see the change, but sure enough the old keyboard shortcut has been replaced - and the menu has even been updated to reflect the change! Magic. I'd be interested to know what happens when you try this in apps that have more than one menu item with the same name. Right now I'm going through all my other multi-window apps (SubEthaEdit, Safari etc.) and remapping their quit keys as well.

Straight From Womb To The Keyboard

Straight From Womb To The Keyboard 07/23/2004 06:30 PM
Here's a story that just won't go away. As technology becomes ever more important in society, parents don't want their kids to "miss out" in any way, and have been getting them involved in technology at a younger and younger age. The trend has been spotted in mobile phone usage in the past and now many are beginning to wonder how young is too young for a kid to be using a computer. Some parents are apparently buying computers for their kids before they even turn one year old. Others, however, are afraid that such early exposure to computers is damaging for kids who learn to only focus on the computer and never learn spacial and physical things like how to play with building blocks. That might be a bit extreme, but it does seem that if you're still counting their age in months, they probably don't need their very own computer. This article is also one of the first I've seen that points out the fact that, whether the parents want the kid to use a computer, since the parents are using one already, it will just make the kids more interested. Thus, comes the rise of "lapware," where a parent can hold their child on their lap and play some sort of game on the computer, involving both the parent and the child, rather than just seating the kid at the computer on his or her own.

Essential Keyboard Shortcuts

Essential Keyboard Shortcuts 06/14/2004 07:39 PM
“For ergonomic reasons, you’re much better off using an external mouse (or other pointing device) and keyboard when you’re working on a notebook. Why? Check out my column on notebook ergonomics. The problem is, you can’t easily use notebook peripherals when you’re on a plane, train, or other public conveyance. But you can learn some keyboard shortcuts. Using shortcuts is a far more efficient way to work than clicking a mouse and dragging a pointer, and it’s much easier on your hands.”Read more…
