Macworld review: Nisus Writer Express

Macworld review: Nisus Writer Express 12/31/2003 03:52 AM
Few applications have been able to overcome Microsoft's word processing juggernaut, but Nisus Writer has maintained a respectable following in a field littered with also-rans. Nisus Writer Express marks Nisus's entry into the world of OS X–native applications, and the end of updates to Nisus Writer. As such, the program sports a new interface with features -- such as drawers containing the program's tools -- typical of Cocoa applications. But because it's essentially a brand-new program, Nisus Writer Express doesn't yet include all the features that were available in Nisus Writer; it will need them in order to be a tenable replacement for your current word processor.

Nisus Software has announced that Nisus Writer Express 2.0 will be available later this summer. The new version of the company's Mac OS X word processor will add support for built-in tables, user-defined styles, footnotes, Microsoft Word templates, PDF creation and more. Some new features, such as autocomplete and the ability to bold and italicize any font, will work only in Mac OS X v.10.3. Current users will be able to upgrade for free while new users can expect a US$59 license fee. System requirements for the new version have not been released.

A problem that afflicts me (and I've noticed many of my brethren) is the need to create a program to solve a task when there are already many perfectly suitable programs on the market for free or for very little cash. The standard justification in my mind is that there isn't a program that does things the exact way I want them to. Now realistically, I tend to pick on programs that are within reach. After all, even if Word didn't suit my needs, I have no intention of writing my own word processing program from scratch. (Although at times, I keep thinking I could build a better version of Outlook ... yet I digress).

Fuji FinePix S5000 Zoom Review

Fuji FinePix S5000 Zoom Review 06/16/2004 11:47 AM

< img src="http://www.gizmodo.com/archives/images/fuji_finepix_s5000.jpg" alt="fuji_finepix_s5000.jpg image" width="150" height="133" border="0" align="right" vspace="5" hspace="15"/>The Fuji FinePix S5000 Zoom is the compact camera that eats like a SLR, at least according to Photography Blog's Mark Goldstein. The 3.1-megapixel lightweight doesn't just look like an DSLR, either, with a few high-end features like RAW imaging mode and 10x optical zoom, despite the relatively low $350 price. If you want some nice features in a small camera but don't need it to fit in your pocket, exactly, check out the review.

Fuji FinePix S20 Pro Reviewed 06/30/2004 08:00 AM

fuji_finepix_s20_pro_8.jpg imagePhotographyBlog reviews the Fuji FinePix S20 Pro, a $1,000 camera that Fuji is positioning to compete with some of the Digital SLRs out there, claiming its Super CCD SR sensor can compete with the rest of them -- despite being only 3-megapixels (it interpolates up to 6 megapixel). According to Fuji, the new sensor (which is also used in the Fuji FinePix F700 Zoom) offers a "four-fold increase in dynamic range when compared to other conventional digital cameras," but Mark Goldstein finds that claim dubious, and you can look at the same comparison shots to make your judgement, as well. It's not that it's a bad camera, exactly, but for the price there are many more attractive and capable options.

Other changes include enhanced outline support based on document content rather than paragraph styles; enhanced support for languages and other improvements. Mellel's claim to fame is its support of non-Roman languages like Syriac, Hebrew and Arabic, Chinese, Japanese and Korean, but the word processor has also gained popularity as a compact and inexpensive alternative to more expensive offerings. 06/17/2004 10:06 AM

FinePix-F450_2.jpg imageTwo new digital cameras from FujiFilm, if you're into this whole "digital camera" fad. The FinePix F440 and F450 are essentially the same camera, sharing the same housing, 3.4x optical zoom, and PictBridge camera-to-printer over USB feature, differentiated only by the resolution of their CCD (not the FujiFilm 'SuperCCD,' by the way) -- the F440 is a 4.1-megapixel camera, while the F450 is a 5.2-megapixel. Both cameras use xD-Picture cards, come with a cradle, and share a very lightweight, slim design (3 x 2.5 x 0.8 inches, even). The F440 should be available for around $400, the F450 for around $500.

But who cares! When these newfangled digi-cameras explode in your face, spewing hot sulpher and chloride gas into your eyes, then we'll see who was right about the dangers of your clockwork nincompoopery.

Though the reviewer is a fan of the increased ISO speed options and enhancements to some other areas of the camera, he doesn't seem to like the "Zoom" part of the S5500 Zoom. The 10x optical zoom may sound like a fancy number, but he goes on to say that it doesn't exactly take the cake when it comes to focusing quickly.

3 Views of Mount Fuji

3 Views of Mount Fuji 05/12/2004 11:16 PM
What happened was, tired in an airport looking for lightweight reading, I grabbed The Last Defender of Camelot, collected late works of Roger Zelazny, who was at the centre of the SciFi universe a few decades back. It has a piece called 24 Views of Mount Fuji, by Hokusai which won a Hugo in 1986 and as a story is only OK but as a narrative wrapped around a famous set of pictures it’s awfully good. On impulse, I typed “hokusai 24” into Google, to discover that there are 36 pictures in the original series, but that Tim Eagen, back in ’98, poked around the Web and ass embled the 24 images from the Zelazny story; a fine piece of curatorship and really an essential companion to reading the story. Looking at one of them, I thought: I’ve been there. There’s an amusing narrative to accompany the views...

03/23/2005 05:11 PM
Xeni Jardin: Former Peruvian president Alberto Fujimori, who was booted from office after a corruption scandal, will finance future campaign hopes with sales from an eponymously-named soda.
He has given his backing to Fuji-Cola, a new drink he claims will "quench the thirst of popular discontent". The former president's supporters want the drink to boost his profile and fund his campaign for re-election in 2006. Mr Fujimori fled to Japan in 2000 as his decade-long presidency collapsed in allegations of corruption and torture. (...) According to local media, Mr Fujimori's son Kenji has applied for Fuji-Cola to be registered as a trademark for the manufacture of beers, mineral waters and fizzy drinks.
Pero el ex-presidente no confirmó si la bebida es destilada de la sangre de los torturados y desaparecidos Peruanos...
