AP - Atari could have redefined guns and gas pedal mayhem with the much anticipated "Driv3r" (pronounced Driver 3), the latest installment in a series of bad-boy-driving-'n'-violence titles. But there's nothing new here to see — nothing new graphically, emotionally, or functionally in the way of game play.

Dance, Voldo, Dance is a music video made by synchronizing the movements of gladiators from the game Soul Calibur with a dance track, so that they appear to be getting down with their nasty selves to the music. It's quite good! 11.2 MB Quicktime Link (via Waxy)

Sony's HMP-A1 VAIO Video Pocket Video
Review

sony_hmp.jpg image

Portable Media World (a spanking new sister site to our favorite French gadget site, Akihabara News) has a review of the HMP-A1, the second-generation video player from Sony. They're impressed by its fit-and-finish, but it's clear from the review that Sony has crippled the device, forcing the user to go through two different programs to copy audio and video to the unit (and no ATRAC, hilariously), as well as reencode most video before transferring it over (it supports MPEG 1/2/4 but not MPEG4 derivatives like DivX or XviD, apparently). Battery life varies wildly depending on how much decoding the HMP-A1 must do, but even when gnawing on the relatively dense MPEG2 files it manages around a 4 hour playback -- couple of movies worth, which is decent. Left-handed users get an unfulfilled tease, as the HMP-A1 supports a screen pivot for lefty use, but doesn't switch the directions of the controls, meaning scrolling down, for instance, will cause the HMP-A1 to scroll up.

It looks nice, but considering the major market for these units -- we geeks who rip our own DVDs, record TV, and download video (illegally) -- it's probably better to wait for one of the iRiver or Archos players that don't do annoying things like hide the directories on the hard drive.

Alias: The Video Game

Alias: The Video Game 04/15/2004 07:38 PM

'Alias' takes on the gaming world: I'm not a big gamer, but this could temp me to start.

The main character — agile, clever and impossibly beautiful superspy Sydney Bristow (played by the agile, clever and impossibly beautiful actress Jennifer Garner) — could easily hold her own with the gallery from "Mortal Kombat."

Add in the fact that "Alias" and its epic, sometimes shocking sometimes schmaltzy storylines can be as engrossing as "Metal Gear Solid," one can convincingly argue that "Alias" is really just a video game that happens to come on your TV every Sunday night.

Apparently Marshall plays a prominent role. As it should be.

Video Game TV Shows

Video Game TV Shows 12/17/2003 02:29 PM
Now that video games are becoming more like professional sports it should be no surprise that a whole bunch of television programs involving video gaming are set to hit the tube. There have been a few such shows that have come on in the last year or so, but now they're going to be everywhere. It seems to be part of the battle of TV execs to combat the fact that more and more people are playing video games rather than watching TV. So, they figure they'll just throw up some programming that involves video games and hope it works.

If IKEA was a video game

If IKEA was a video game 01/25/2004 12:51 PM
Treating spousally mandated IKEA visits as a video-game seems like a pretty good coping strategy, especially when you've got a walk-through to crib from. This is a screamingly funny piece from The Morning News.
You start this world armed only with a UNIVERSAL FURNITURE-ASSEMBLY ALLEN WRENCH. This is the weakest weapon in IKEA: You will have to hit a person 16 times with it to kill them. So your primary goal in this level is to find more lethal means of dispatching your enemies.

As you enter the SHOWROOM, perform a rolling dodge to the left. Grab a free PAPER TAPE MEASURE and a handful of IKEA EMBLAZONED GOLF PENCILS from the kiosk near the entryway. The PENCILS serve quite well as ranged weapons, but it will take some time to master their use. Before venturing further in the world, stand at the kiosk and practice hurling GOLF PENCILS at patrons as they enter the SHOWROOM. Remember: Hitting the eyes does triple damage.

The Video Game That Broke Apart China

The Video Game That Broke Apart China 05/28/2004 03:20 PM
Who said video games can't change the world? That seems to be the fear of the Chinese government, who has banned the video game "Hearts of Iron" for (they claim) "distorting history and damaging China's sovereignty and territorial integrity." To be honest, I don't know enough about the video game in question or the specific complaints concerning Chinese history to understand what their specific problems are (and the article is somewhat vague), but, honestly, who could possibly feel threatened that the events in a historical video game could damage a nation's sovereignty? If one little video game can damage both the sovereignty and territorial integrity of a nation, you have to wonder how strong those things are in the first place.
