The Hubble Space Telescope and beyond
The Hubble Space Telescope and beyond
11/12/2003 01:15 PMThe Hubble Space Telescope can be considered one of the most important
science instruments created so far. Its service record is beyond
impressive, but as it approaches its 14th anniversary of service it is
becoming clear that new instruments are needed to complement or
replace the now aging Hubble. Instruments that will include all
technological advancements in optics and electronics that we have
developed since the Hubble launch in 1990. Hubble will serve for at
least 10 more years, but there is already the project underway that is
aimed to create a new instrument that will help the scientists to
observe in even more detail: The James Webb Space Telescope.

Hubble Telescope Instrument Out of Order
Hubble Telescope Instrument Out of Order
08/09/2004 07:00 PMAn instrument that helped the orbiting Hubble Space Telescope look at
black holes, newly forming stars and far-off galaxies has broken down,
and NASA said Monday it is looking at possible ways to fix it. The
instrument, called the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph, was
installed in 1997 and was designed to operate for five years. But it
may be possible to rescue some of its operations, NASA said.
The space agency said Hubble's other instruments -- the Near Infrared
Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer, the Advanced Camera for Surveys,
and the Wide Field/Planetary Camera 2 -- are all operating normally.
NASA said an electrical malfunction may be to blame. A similar problem
affected the instrument in 2001, forcing a switch to the backup side.
Now the backup side has failed, NASA said.
