Matrix online game hires real actors to
play in-game characters
03/25/2005 06:33 AM
Cory Doctorow: The Matrix Online (a massively multiplayer online game based on the Matrix franchise) has hired a troupe of 20 actors to hang around in game and in character, advancing the story and generally making it all seem more disbelief-suspendingly real.
Since the close of the beta, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment announced that it has employed a troupe of 20-odd people whose job it will be to enact narrative scenarios in The Matrix Online live. These people will assume the roles of popular characters, interact with players, and generally move the stories in ways that only live "actors" can. And though it appears that the story hasn't officially commenced, a few players on the Method server were treated to a pretty slick sample of it this afternoon: an extended pep-talk by none other than Morpheus himself. (See the screenshots for proof.) But this is an Out of the Box report, so here are our first impressions of the game so far.

Where's The Border For Real World Laws
In A Virtual World?

Where's The Border For Real World Laws
In A Virtual World?
12/04/2003 03:52 AM
Last month when everyone was making a big deal over the news that the online game Second Life had decided that players own any intellectual property they create in the game, I said it was a bad idea, since it basically took all of the problems of our intellectual property system and moved them into the virtual world - where it was likely to get more confusing. Over at LawMeme, James Grimmelmann, has been thinking a lot about that very idea and has written an insanely long - but absolutely worth reading - discussion about intellectual property issues as it relates to games. It's impossible to summarize his points, but he explores many of the issues in-depth and appears to have thought about these issues in much more detail than the designers of the various games. What it really seems to come down to is the question of whether or not in-game actions are simply covered by the End User License Agreement (which basically becomes the Constitution for that game) or if real laws in the real world should apply.

The Real Estate Game

The Real Estate Game 09/08/2004 08:51 AM
Some of you have purchased homes before, so you know a bit about how the process works: Mortgage Approval, Appraisals, Surveys, Title Searches, Purchase Agreements, Stipulation Sheets, Closing, Whining, Bickering, Signing 1,000,000 pages, Moving, blah blah blah... Even though it's a scary thought when you first start, and you've probably heard enough horror stories to not want to go through the process, it's really not that bad. It's actually pretty easy if you take a little time and learn about it. It makes more sense than most college curricula, and it doesn't take a genius to figure it out. Literally anyone can play the game if they have a dedication to making things happen. This is an introduction to real estate investing using my 4 years of personal experience as a guide. While all of my experience has been on the U.S. side of the pond, I'm sure enough of this information will apply to everyone to make it worthwhile. Game developer: the real pirates are my

07/22/2004 01:20 PM
From the author of Galactic Civilizations I and II:
"So don't talk to me about piracy. It's not the pirates that have ripped us off of hundreds of thousands in lost royalties. It's been "Real businesses" doing that thank you very much. The position of royalty eating parasite has already been taken."...

"So yea, tell me again how I need to put some dongle or whatever on my game to keep 15 year olds from pirating? When our contract with publishers forces them to wear a shock collar that I can press a button to shock them if royalties aren't paid on time then we'll talk about forcing customers to deal with massive copy protection. But it's not the pirates I worry about."

Real world semantics

Real world semantics 02/18/2004 09:32 AM
At ETech (which I unfortunately could not attend) there was a presentation entitled real world semantics that is close in spirit to my own recent experimentation. The presenters were Technorati's Kevin Marks and Tantek Celik, who fought the good fight to bring quality CSS support to Microsoft's now-abandoned MSIE/Mac. Phrases they use to define real world semantics: "emerging semantic (x)html", "adoption by 'real people'", "beyond academics and theoretical discussions." Exactly. ...

Making Torture Legal, a story by Anthony Lewis about an issue that ought to be an issue in this issueless campaign, is the best of its kind that I've seen. It was referred to me by an Israeli friend. As he said to me, "of course there is torture in Israeli prisons, but there is nothing remotely as bad as this." Truth, and justice. May it again be the American way.

Video Game Sports Taking Over For The

Video Game Sports Taking Over For The
Real Thing
09/27/2004 03:20 AM
Every year when big sporting events come, you always see news organizations run the various teams through a sports game simulator to see what the game predicts will happen. They do it every year with the Superbowl and the World Series among others. Well, now that there's a labor battle in the hockey world, it appears that G4techTV (which hasn't really recovered since buying, and then ditching TechTV) has decided it will start playing the games virtually and posting the scores and stats to their website along with videos from the virtual games. Parent company Comcast claims they'll feature video highlights from the games on their Sportsnet Channel as well (as if anyone watches it). Of course, there's no indication if anyone will actually care. Apparently, G4 hasn't decided which video hockey game they'll be using, so it may just depend on which one coughs up enough dough to sponsor the event.

London-based music business magazine Five Eight has published an article by Magnatune founder John Buckman titled Using the Creative Commons in the Real World in which Buckman explains how he chose to use a CC license for his record label.

Also, Buckman in response to a question on his blog regarding source material:

I'm in the process of consolidating all the various individual tracks we've received, to make a "remix sources" page at Magnatune, so you can easily find them all, and create new, interesting works.

Keep up the good work John!

Thinking Robotics for the Real World 12/19/2004 03:41 PM
IST has published a new article on the Bayesian Inspired Brain and Artefacts project (BIBA), which is part of NEURO-iT, a European Union Future and Emerging Technologies Initiative. The goal of BIBA is to produce artefacts that are capable of using Bayesian probabilistic logic to "understand and implement life-like behavioral coordination". To state their goal in more understandable terms, they intend to make robots that can act on incomplete data just like humans and other animals can. To this end they have constructed BIBA Bot, a robot equipped with cameras, a SICK LMS and IR sensors. BIBA Bot will initially demonstrate insect-level intelligence similar to that of an ant but researcher hope to eventually achieve mammal-level intelligence equal to that of a dog.
