Computers Make You Sick

Computers Make You Sick 09/09/2004 12:33 PM
Not feeling so good? Perhaps you should blame your computer. A new study says that three out of every four office workers have health problems because they're not properly trained to use their computer. The problems are pretty obvious: back problems, eyesight problems or headaches. As this becomes a bigger and bigger problem, the suggestion is that corporations need to be more proactive in training people on good computing and good ergonomics. Of course, none of this seems particularly new, and many companies already have ergonomics groups that make sure people are well set up to use their computer in a healthy manner. At some point, good computing practices and good ergonomics are going to be issues that people are trained in at an early age -- and not at the office. However, in the meantime, companies who want to protect their employees' eyes, back and head might want to do a better job ensuring good computing ergonomic practices.

How computers make kids dumb

How computers make kids dumb 03/22/2005 03:15 PM
Short of reading Harry Potter books, most kids are not likely reading as much as they should these days. However, let’s take away the one appliance that makes content such as text, interesting to students. That will make things better! While I respect what is being said in this article, I disagree with it….

“Father” of Mac platform aims to make
computers easier to use
01/05/2005 07:26 PM
Jef Raskin, credited with being the “father” of the Macintosh computer and former Apple employee #31, has recently obtained $2 million in start up funding to make computers easier to use. Raskin is featured today in an article by the California-based Pacifia Tribune. "We formed the Raskin Center for Humane Interface," he says. "And we have been funded by a multi-national corporation for $2 million. Our plan is to work out of this office to show the world how to make computers much easier to use." Raskin wrote the groundbreaking book, "The Humane Interface," which has now been translated into dozens of languages and is part of most university computer courses. The new business is an offshoot of the philosophical work begun in the book. Raskin's concept involves "unified" computer programs. Instead of multiple applications that must be "opened" before they can be used, Raskin's model allows a computer user to simply shift between word processing, spread sheets, photo manipulation, and just about everything else through simple "command sets." His new project also involves his son, Aza, a 20-year-old college student. With an eye to the reality of the business world, Aza says the purpose of the Raskin Center for Humane Interface won't be to put computer companies out of business, it will "save them money in technical support." The Raskins say they are confident that the Raskin Center for Humane Interface will be offering the world an authoritative product within 18 months.

PCs out sick more than users

PCs out sick more than users 06/25/2004 08:37 AM
The average UK PC is rendered unusable for the equivalent of around nine working days every year because the owner is cleaning up spam or fighting viruses. This is two days a year more than the average UK worker takes off as sick leave, according to Yahoo. A survey of 2,500 UK e-mail users found that 70 percent of users had been infected by a virus in the past year and 42 percent say they found it less stressful fighting their way through rush-hour traffic than finding legitimate e-mails among the spam in their inboxes. Spam is a problem for all e-mail users but some companies are hit harder than others.

I've been sick this past week, but that hasn't stopped me from testing applications for Lockergnome. In between trips to the toilet, I stumbled upon Huminity. I'd point you directly to its site, but I don't want you to install it. In fact, I want you to tell everybody on the PLANET not to install it. Why? Because it just raped my address book. I guess I didn't take their privacy policy literally: 'Contacts are notified by a one-time e-mail notification about their inclusion in the Huminity network.' WTF?! Assume that when you install the program, the people in your contacts list will be notified with no further warning. Sick! Well, if you got a message from me telling you to join this network, let me use this space to WARN YOU to avoid this site / software at all cost....

Flick mosquitos or you could get sick
and die

Flick mosquitos or you could get sick
and die
07/19/2004 01:32 AM
If you catch a mosquito feeding on you, you should flick it away rather than squashing it, lest you drive its infectious guts into your body.
The issue is reviewed in an article published this month in the New England Journal of Medicine that focuses on a 57-year-old Pennsylvania woman who died in 2002 of a fungal infection in her muscles called Brachiola algerae.

Doctors were puzzled because the fungus was thought to be found only in mosquitoes and other insects. But it's not found in mosquito saliva like West Nile virus and malaria, so a simple mosquito bite could not have caused the infection.

The article's authors concluded that the woman must have smashed a mosquito on her skin, smearing its body parts into the bite.
