Strider Robot Walks on Water

Strider Robot Walks on Water 09/10/2004 09:26 AM

strider.jpg imageCarnegie Mellon's NanoRobotics Lab has created a robot prototype so lightweight that it doesn't break the surface tension of water, enabling it to stand and manuever on top of it. Stand on the water, that is. I think the best part isn't just that they built one, but that according to the article the mechanism that insects like water striders use to walk on water wasn't even discovered until last year. Their secret? They're just really, really light.

AP - It could be called a mechanical miracle — a robot that walks on water. With inspiration from nature and some help from research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a research team led by Carnegie Mellon engineering assistant professor Metin Sitti has built a tiny robot that can walk on water, much like insects known as water skimmers, water skaters, pond skaters or Jesus bugs.

Rabbit Robot Walks into the News

Rabbit Robot Walks into the News 04/18/2005 06:14 PM
University of Michigan researcher Jessy Grizzle has made the news again with his dynamically walking robot named Rabbit. A CNN technology story showcases the robot, which has no actual feet. The legs end in narrow tips to make sure the robot doesn't rely on big, flat feet to keep from falling. For more than five years, the Rabbit team has worked on a developing dynamic walking algorithms that will allow the robot to move, walk, and even run like humans do. "The concept of stability is reduced to two formulas", say Grizzle, who hopes the work will not only lead to walking robots but to bionic legs that can automatically match the gait of their wearer. For more information including research papers and video of the robot in action, visit Jessy Grizzle's bipedal locomotion website.

CMU Water Strider Robot 09/13/2004 10:48 AM
The Swirling Brain and lots of our other readers have submitted stories about CMU's new robot that can walk on water. The tiny robot is light enough that it doesn't break the surface tension of the water, allowing it to walk on water in the same way as Water Skimmers (aka Jesus Bugs). For more on the Water Strider robot see the stories in Wired News, Forbes, and Slashdot. The CMU robot is similar to the MIT Robostrider robot we reported on last year.

A Running Robot Or A Rolling Robot?

A Running Robot Or A Rolling Robot? 12/18/2003 12:58 PM
It took years for researchers to figure out how to make a robot be able to stand and walk on two legs. In fact, it's so complicated, that some researchers are giving up on that idea and using Segway balancing technology on their robots instead of legs. However, the folks at Sony seem to have taken the concept of the upright walking robot one step further: they've figured out how to make a robot run. That's right, it actually leaves the ground at points while jogging along. It apparently needs a bit of a walking start to get up to speed, and even at running speed, it's more of a slow jog - where it's feet barely leave the ground. Still, it's a start, and with some more work, they believe they can really make the robot run.

A Sydney motorist who killed a cyclist while she was distracted with composing an SMS has been given a suspended sentence.
"It is tragic that a man's life was lost in these circumstances but this case should serve as a stark warning to all that the risk is very real and with the extended use of mobile phones generally more public attention should be drawn to this risk," Judge Cohen said.

However she said she took into account Ciach's guilty plea, her excellent character and the fact the dead man's parents did not wish her to be imprisoned.

Microsoft Walks Multipath

Microsoft Walks Multipath 04/05/2005 04:14 AM
Since much of the server-based storage targeted for consolidation on Internet Protocol storage-area networks (SAN) resides on departmental servers running Windows, Microsoft Corp.'s commitment to iSCSI has been key to the success of IP SANs so far. The company began offering an iSCSI driver, or "initiator," for Windows 2000 Server, Server 2003 and XP Pro shortly after the standard was final in 2003. In February, Microsoft stated it would release late a new version that supports multipathing, a technology common in Fibre Channel SANs that supports load balancing and fail-over by allowing multiple connections, or paths, between servers and storage devices. Previously, Microsoft offered only multipath I/O (MPIO) for Fibre Channel, although Network Appliance Inc. and EqualLogic Inc. adapted it for their iSCSI products. Microsoft's goal is to simplify block-based networked storage by providing a universal initiator and MPIO interface for Windows servers. "In the Fibre Channel world, there are a lot of proprietary solutions, and they can get quite difficult to troubleshoot," says Claude Lorenson, a senior product manager at Microsoft's Windows Server division. To avoid that situation, Microsoft will support only its own MPIO mechanism for iSCSI, although Lorenson says it will continue to support "legacy" MPIO schemes for Fibre Channel.

Naked Barbie walks free

Naked Barbie walks free 12/31/2003 04:59 PM
John Parres points us to an interesting chunk of copyright news:
Court rules on Naked Barbie: We know art when we see it

An artist's use of the iconic Barbie doll in photographs depicting the Mattel toy without clothing and being assaulted by kitchen appliances is protected as "free speech" says a US Circuit Court. Upholding a decision by a lower court, the court of appeals said the works are obvious parodies and do not infringe on the company's copyright and trademark protection. Mattel had claimed people might think they were responsible for the caricatures and that their availability to the public could damage the brand and even hurt sales. At issue was a 78 image series by Utah artist Thomas Forsythe, shot in 1999 and titled "Food Chain Barbie."

Once widely available online, the series has been the subject of intense legal action by Mattel and only a few images remain available for download. In the latest ruling, a three-judge panel of the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals unanimously upheld an August 2001 ruling by US District Judge Ronald Lew. Following that earlier decision, which Mattel appealed, Mr Forsythe's attorney, Simon Frankel, told the press, "The ruling doesn't mean it's open season (to exploit products by) Mattel, it means there is a certain amount of breathing room for artists who want to use a commercial symbol that has tremendous cultural meaning, for purposes of artistic expression."
