At Microsoft Research Asia in Beijing, China, computer scientists Hongjiang Zhang, Yufei Ma, and Gu Xu have developed software that automatically generates highlight reels from video of sports programs. Import the video onto a PC, and computer vision algorithms recognize objects on the screen, like balls or people. The software…

Automatic sports highlights

Automatic sports highlights 07/04/2004 03:47 PM
Researchers have devised software that churns through sports video and automatically grabs the highlights. A New Scientist article describes several of these projects--from snooker analysis at Trinity College to soccer game scanning at the University of Florence. Computer vision problems are notoriously difficult, but, according to the article, "as sports follow fixed rules, and take place in predictable locations, computers ought to be able to pick out the key pieces of play and string them together." That AK-47 Automatic Rifle? That's Just
My MP3 Player
02/10/2004 02:41 AM
By now we've seen all sorts of odd or confusing convergence products, where people will try to add an MP3 player to a variety of different products that don't necessarily make sense as an MP3 player. Here's one, however, that goes a bit further than you might have predicted. Apparently, a UK company is selling the AK-MP3 - an MP3 player built into the ammunition clip of a Kalashnikov automatic rifle. The company selling this is doing so pretty much as a publicity stunt to sell the players loaded with audio books they're pitching. Their website includes a picture which suggests that not only should you be wandering around swinging your automatic rifle around while bopping to music coming out of your headphones - you should do it in a camouflage bikini. The rifle, the girl and the bikini are apparently not needed to use the MP3 player. The folks behind the player point out that: "This is our bit for world peace - hopefully, from now on many militants and terrorists will use their AK-47s to listen to music and audio books."

Automatic Condom Fitter

Automatic Condom Fitter 04/19/2005 08:47 AM

condom_auto.jpgA Senegalese inventor is getting quite a bit of press for his automatic condom fitting device that is being shown at the International Exhibition of Inventions. The device is designed to help men slip on prophylactics in one smooth motion—so fast that "with a bit of practice the man's partner probably won't even notice that he had reached over and used his trusty auto condom fitter."

The device is not commercialized at this time, but Mor Maty Seck hopes to see it in production soon. I can't tell off hand if it's a one-time use sort of thing or something that you'd just wear around your neck on a chain. (Thanks, pt!)

Aggregators and automatic updates

Just a quick question, mostly because I haven't made up my mind yet: News aggregators like Feedreader, and probably others...

Automatic feed unsubscibe

Automatic feed unsubscibe 09/16/2004 07:38 AM

Dave Winer asks about automatic unsubscribing from a feed, and it's an interesting question. If a feed is no longer updated, how should the publisher tell aggregators to unsubscribe from it? I think the simplest solution is for the server to return HTTP status code 410, as recommended here and here. An aggregator that receives a 410 for a specific found should then automatically unsubscribe from it.

This will be supported in the next build of FeedDemon, and I believe it's already supported by several other aggregators. In FeedDemon's case, the user will be prompted to unsubscribe, since automatically unsubscribing would remove the feed from FeedDemon's cache - losing the user's history of that feed's postings. If the user chooses not to unsubscribe, FeedDemon will turn off automatic updating for that feed.

Unforuntately, my biggest criticism of PHP remains: all of the above is supported using functions built in to the default namespace! The lack of a smart namespace system (like Python's modules) really gets in the way when you start trying to write reusable code or large applications.
