Free open WiFi on Tacoma-Washington
train, courtesy WiFi hacker
03/24/2005 08:15 PM
Cory Doctorow: A Seattle wireless hacker rides a commuter train from Tacoma every day with a battery-powered WiFi hotspot in his backpack that's linked up to the Internet with a 14.4 144k wireless modem. Catch his train and get free WiFi on your commute.
The open wireless node can be found in the first car of the last morning train and in Car 403 on the 5:10pm return trip. Use SSID "FreeInternetAccess" or "seattlewireless" to connect - You may have to assign yourself an IP in the range 192.168.0.0/24 and use the Default Gateway 192.168.0.1 as the DHCP is sometimes flakey

Review: WiFi Seeker / WiFi Spy

Review: WiFi Seeker / WiFi Spy 07/16/2004 04:50 PM
A few weeks ago I got Chrisalis Developemnt's WiFi Seeker, a convenient keychain-sized wireless network locator. Marware's recently announced WiFi Spy is a rebranded version of the same device, so it should perform identically.

To locate a wireless network simply press the button and watch the LEDs. When the lights stop sweeping back and forth, the number that remain lit will show the strength of the wireless signal. If the lights continue to sweep back and forth, you're not in range for any wireless network. Unlike other devices, the WiFi Seeker isn't fooled by other 2.5 GHz signals like microwave ovens or cordless phones, and it doesn't depend on 802.11 client activity to detect the access point. It detects both 802.11b and 802.11g.

More Than One New ACT! in the Works 03/14/2003 01:28 AM
Over the course of the last six months, Best Software has launched six new versions of ACT!, the small-business contact management application. Some of them are the typical product upgrades and releases expected of every vendor. Others, such as ACT! for Web, ACT! for PocketPC and ACT! for Palm, are designed to move the vendor into new markets.

This is how justice works

This is how justice works 01/18/2004 03:49 PM
I've had a wonderful weekend. I've had time to watch four movies from my "DVDs I am going to watch when I retire since I am never going to have the time before that" -collection, I have eaten well, slept - well - sufficiently, and still managed to tick off a few "things to try before you die" -list and move them onto "cool, I'll do that again" -list.

So, however, this evening, at a business dinner (don't ask: I know it's Sunday) I make a complete fool of myself by showing up late (darn). And not only that - my cough which I thought had already vanished, decides to have its encore right at the same moment I have introduced myself and am thirstily sipping from a glass of water. And what an encore it was: in a surprising combination of sight and sound the cough (with a mouthful of water) bursts out, spraying the water across the table, completely surprising everyone. Including me.

The whole table stops, forks suspended midway between plate and mouth, and I feel the cool and curious look of Japanese businessmen fixed on my neck, as I try to hide and escape under the table. "Are you ok?", I hear my boss ask faintly - and I stammer something in reply that nearly, but not quite, sounds like "yes", cheeks burning. Oh well, there goes my professional reputation...

I guess this is how the universe collects its debt on happiness. I recall once, in a shower (I do a lot of my thinking in the shower), I had a wonderful revelation. I don't recall what it was about anymore, but it was a profound thing - enlightenment, you could say - and I was so happy about it that the soap slipped from my hand and fell right into the toilet. So I guess that was the more important lesson to be learned of the two: close the lid before you shower.

Irony. The most common element in the universe. And what a wonderful universe it is! ;-).

In his a target= new href= http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2005/02/20050202-11.htmlState of the Union/a address Wednesday night, George Bush said laid down what sounded like a bedrock principle of his administration: Taxpayer dollars must be spent wisely, or not at all. As the folks over at the a target= new href= http://thinkprogress.org/index.php?p=81#commentsCenter for American Progress/a have predicted, Bush will live to regret uttering that sentence: Every time his administration spends money on some ill-advised boondoggle, those ten words will surely be quoted back at him.

Well, the air conditioner works... 08/28/2004 08:52 PM
During my home inspection they tested the air conditioner by turning it on for about 10 seconds and then shutting it off. The inspectors explained that they can't do much more than that in "cold" weather. So I've always been wondering if it actually worked. Today I found out. It was 90 degrees upstairs when I decided to shut the windows and kick on the air conditioner, set at 72 degrees. I'm happy to report that the place is cooling...

TopStyle 3.12 in the Works

TopStyle 3.12 in the Works 03/14/2005 06:24 PM

I hadn't planned to release a new version of TopStyle so soon after coming out with versi on 3.11, but I've decided that one is necessary to resolve a few remaining bugs (including this one).

It will be a few weeks before I'm ready to post a beta of TopStyle 3.12, so it's too early for me to state exactly what will be in the new version. But among the other issues I'll address is the oft-reported problem of Mozilla "swallowing" the focus away from TopStyle's editor (describe d here). Although this bug is actually in Mozilla rather than in TopStyle itself, I'm assuming that it will never be corrected in Mozilla (after all, the Bugzilla report of this problem has existed for almost two years), so I'm going to code a workaro und in TopStyle.

The beta will be available only to existing TopStyle customers, and will be announced here when it's ready.

Feedster Actually Works

I know this going to sound silly -- but now I **know** Feedster works.  A friend of mine just bought an iPod and they were asking me about the FM radio adapter.  I know I saw one talked about in the blog-o-sphere recently so I ran a query for iPod and came up with the result.  How damn cool.  It really is like searching either your short term memory or searching conversations you just happened to listen in on.

A lot of times developers don't actually use the things they build.  Or use them peripherally at best.  It really is cool when they work and you have that "ah ha" moment.

"Design is how it works"

"Design is how it works" 12/02/2003 03:04 AM
Steve Jobs, addressing iPod competitors such as Dell's Digital Jukebox complains that they "don't think about design innovation." Complaining about other companies failure to incorporate good industrial design into their products, Jobs stated that "most people make the mistake of thinking design is what a thing looks like, adding "that's not what we think design is. It's not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works."
