and glitz to a Philadelphia courtroom. The famous couple was in town
Friday for the trial of Beanie Sigel, a rapper and protege of Jay-Z.
Sigel faces attempted murder charges related to the shooting of
Terrence Speller outside a West Philadelphia bar last summer.

comes with a built-in MP3 player, an FM tuner, digital recorder, an
MMC memory card slot for storage of audio files, and a 128x128 pixel

BREAKING FAKE NEWS: Gizmodo has gained access to a
confidential letter from Nokia's Chief Executive Officer detailing
how, in some cases (particularly if the user is especially gullible or
easy suggestible), Nokia phones can release a burst of electromagnetic
energy, causing heart failure, brain hemorrhaging, and in some cases
Instant Death Syndrome. In the letter, CEO Jorma Ollila makes it clear
that the problem is well know, and the "loss of life is an acceptable
risk we must face in order to sell our products."
In a related note, I have gained the ability to make genitalia
disappear using naught but the power of my mind. You'll know
it's the truth because details of my powers have been printed on
Gawker letterhead. (Thanks, Bob Pease!)

Nokia's 3220 Airtexter
06/01/2004 07:25 AM
Nokia's new 3220 is a nice
enough tri-band phone, with integrated VGA camera and all the standard
stuff, but besides looking like the bottom of a shoe, it's most known
for its optional Xpress-on funshell which adds 'airtexting' using a
persistence of vision LED array (as seen in Phillip Torrone's
POV shoes or any number of Burning Man art projects). By waving the
phone back and forth through the air, users can display short messages
that appear to be much larger than the phone itself and look something
like those LED signs that tell you how long you have to wait in queue
at the DMV. It's a fun concept, but somewhat hard to explain to those
that haven't seen it, and it brings up some interesting concepts when
it comes to heckling. With the ability to
quickly generate an LED sign with an message on it, will airtexting be
the next thing that causes cellphones to be banned from public
places?

considerably easier to write out Chinese characters with a pen than to
try and tap them out using a numeric keypad. Read...

And while we're on the
subject of Symbian, Reuters has confirmed that a shares redistribution
and rights issue will rearrange the corporate control of Symbian,
keeping Nokia's stake in the company under the controlling 50 percent.
So yeah, that's boring, but probably good -- it means that Symbian
won't become a Nokia-only company, and the other participants, like
founder Psion, Sony Ericsson, Siemens, Samsung, and Matsushita will
get their fair share of attention. It also means Psion is about 92
million dollars richer, money they plan to use to expand their
staff.

Nokia's Marketshare Continues to Fall
Nokia's Marketshare Continues to Fall
06/08/2004 09:07 AM
I won't bother you with all the specific numbers --
they're in there if you want to dig them out -- but suffice it to say
that Nokia, which warned on April 6th that its market share was
declining, was not joking in the least, with their overall market
share slipping to 28.9 percent from 34.6 percent last quarter, despite
an handset market that is still growing overall. Nokia has continued
to lose marketshare to companies like Samsung and Motorola who are
providing the type of handsets -- especially flipphones -- that
consumers in the hot developing markets are clamoring for.

Nokia has announced that the
7610, the slick 1-megapixel phone that everyone was so worked up about
when it was announced at CeBit (Hanover) is now shipping in Europe,
Africa, and Asia-Pacific. This is also the first phone that ships with
Nokia's 'Lifeblog' application, designed to be an all-in-one
moblogging tool for uploading pictures and entries easily onto your
blog (presuming you run Nokia's software and not, say, MovableType or
Wordpress). I would be happy to accept this phone into my family,
sharing our love and laughter.

10/29/2003 01:40 PMWe wrote yesterday that our initial reaction to Nokia's new 7700
cellphone was that it looked a lot like the N-Gage. We didn't realize
how right we were. Our pal Rich Brome of PhoneScoop got confirmation
from Nokia that just as with the N-Gage, to make a phone call with the
7700 you have to hold the thing up to your head at an awkard sideways
angle (unless you want to use a headset). This bit of misguided
industrial design has quickly turned out to be one of the most widely
derided features of the N-Gage, even inspiring parody sites like
SideTalkin.com. Nokia, what were you thinking? Read...
