Gadget Overload
Gadget Overload
04/26/2004 04:07 PMWe've all heard stories about convergence when it comes to gadgets,
but for many people, all we've experienced is the
nee
d for a larger and larger gadget bag (and a corresponding increase
in chiropractor bills). Of course, even worse than the gadgets
themselves, may be each of the different chargers needed to make sure
the devices actually run. The question, though, is whether or not
this is a temporary state where the possible future we all like to
talk about just isn't here yet - or if we're really moving towards a
world where more devices is the norm, rather than the other way
around. Right now, though, the situation leads to somewhat comic
(assuming you're not the person involved) situations like the
following: "After downloading some massive high-res files from the
digital camera to my laptop, I needed to send them to my coworker's
laptop. Of course, I didn't have a wireless local-area network (WLAN)
card for that old IBM. Neither laptop had a disk drive. The PC didn't
recognize a USB stick. There was no high-speed access at my funky
hotel in downtown San Francisco, nor could I log the laptop into the
LAN in the convention center's pressroom. And, the pressroom's dial-up
connection took so long, the laptop's batteries died, the adapter
being back at the hotel room."

Effervescent Bollywood advertisements, e-voting, and

topics from Xeni Jardin's BoingBoing contributions to achieve some
eclectic frisson -- those posts just happen to be her last three. They
may be indicative, though, of Jardin's many tentacled exploration into
dozens of subjects, not just as one of the four cornerstones of
BoingBoing, but as a contributing writer for WIRED Magazine and on-air
commentator for NPR's Day 2 Day radio program, as well as her duties
as conference and art show organizer extraordinaire. Who better to
ping with a packet of, "What's in your gadget bag?" (Am I getting good

default storage locations and names (even as aliases) while still
letting users override those choices and pick their own storage
metaphor. This isn't nuclear physics - everyone has experience
organizing their "stuff" (socks, bills, books, DVDs) so why not a) let
them do it and b) use familiar metaphors for it?

Journo's Iraq gadget-bag
05/06/2004 03:07 AMPeter Maass, a war correspondant in Iraq, opens his gadget bag in a
Gizmodo interview. He's got good kit.
You don't need a hardened computer, though breakdowns are frequent. I
use an Apple iBook and took the precaution, during the invasion of
Iraq, of covering the screen and keyboard in saran wrap, to keep out
the sand. An item I didn't have, but dearly wished for, was night
vision goggles. If you have to drive at night with the military in a
warzone, as I and other non-embedded journalists did, you can't use
any lights (you even have to tape over the red-light indicators on
your dashboard). Driving without headlights in a desert behind a tank
that doesn't have brakelights is an unpleasurable experience.

Gadget of the Week: inMotion
Gadget of the Week: inMotion
12/06/2003 09:44 AMWhat do you get for someone who carries 10,000 songs wherever they go?
Why, a portable sound system of course.
Until recently, there were very few on-the-go options for using an
iPod without headphones: Cassette adapters, wireless transmitters or
stereo cables allowed the iPod to play through most home receivers, if
such a device was available away from home; several smaller-stature
computer speakers were offered, though none offered much in the way of
portability; and the best...

How Do You Work This Damn Gadget?
How Do You Work This Damn Gadget?
01/26/2004 04:41 AMI have a very nice digital camera that I got about a year ago that has
all sorts of funky features - most of which I will never figure out.
It came with something like four different instruction books, and I
never was quite sure which one I was supposed to read for what.
Eventually, I figured out how to (a) take pictures and (b) get
pictures off the camera, and have been mostly happy with it since
then. However, the thousands of fancy features I'm sure the camera
has will likely continue to go unused. It seems I'm not the only
person to be befuddled by the
late
st in gadget complexity. Many more gadgets are coming with more
features - but that feature creep is leading to increasingly more
complex user interfaces that are becoming much more of a pain to
figure out than useful. It sounds like there's a growing backlash
against such overly complex gadgets. The gadget makers don't seem to
have caught on to this year - but many people claim they're putting
off (or giving up altogether) certain purchases due to fears of the
difficulty in using the devices. That should set of alarm bells for
gadget makers, but most seem to have not received the message.

Gadget Magazine Bubble
Gadget Magazine Bubble
06/07/2004 09:06 AMOm Malik picked up an issue of Primedia's Connected magazine
and was so disgusted by its lack of good gadget news and insight that
he did what no other angry internet writer would dare to do -- he
wrote a blog entry. Fortunately, Om knows what he's talking about,
especially when he compliments me and my online colleagues by claiming
that a simple aggregation of a few blogs collectively kicks the ass of
almost any dead tree magazine around. What's more useful to you:
publications with 90 day lead times or blogs that measure scoop time
by the minute? Thank god there are a few magazines out there doing it
right. I was pleasantly surprised by Mobile PC Magazine's recent
laptop comparison issue that used the paper format to show life-sized
pictures of each notebook's keyboard -- exactly the sort of thing that
leverages (synergizes!) the strengths of the paper medium. But for up
to the minute news, what's the point? The internet wounded magazines
years ago, and blogs have refined the technique to a deadly art.
(P.S. Magazine editors, I am available for freelance.)
