04/09/2004 04:11 PMSo you thought the 4GB IBM/Hitachi micro drives as used in the iPod
mini are small? Toshiba is making a 4GB drive that is only 2.1cm (0.85
inch) in diameter. (via Macminute) Less than 10 years ago when I had
my BBS and FidoNet hub "the Source!" (spelled that way) I had a much
bigger disk with much less capacity that imploded. Henrik Jørgensen
came to the rescue, lending me a 4GB scsi disk and a scsi controller

According to The Inquirer,
Japanese companies are rapidly increasing production of their small
hard drives as, unsurprisingly, the demand for tiny storage that will
fit in portable electronics increases rapidly. Toshiba is planning on
ramping up production of its tiny 0.85-inch hard drives to a rate of
almost 200,000 a month, while Hitachi will increase its 1-inch drive
production to two million units per quarter. Global hard drive markers
shipped 260 million units in fiscal 2003, 80 percent of which went
into servers and PCs. The remaining percentage, which goes into home
electronics, are expected to grow by 50% each year -- I'm betting it
will be even greater than that once the manufacturers can get enough
tiny units into the channels. Two years from now there won't be a
single smartphone announced without a hard drive.

Toshiba has
semi-announced that they will claim the throne of "world's smallest
portable audio player containing a hard drive" in 2005, thanks to
their 0.85 inch hard drive announced in January. The iPod mini,
freshly released in Japan, currently holds the title. It's not the
size that matters, Toshiba. Wait, yeah it is, sorry. The capacity of
Toshiba's new player is expected to be 2GB or more.

09/07/2004 06:47 AMOh no! People are reporting that Samsung has unveiled the world's
first mobile phone with a built-in hard drive. Now I'm not going to be
able to talk about that as a tech inevitability, looking extremely
forward thinking and smart in the process. How about this: In the
future, all flat screen TVs will double as pancake griddles. Plasmas
will also fry up bits of delicious ham.

JVC's Mystery Hard Drive Camcorders
Revealed: They're Hard Drive Camcorders
09/14/2004 11:18 AM
Oops, I almost forgot about these new cameras
announced from JVC - the ones they've been hyping up to no end as
their big "mystery product." Basically, they're camcorders with hard
drives in them - a 4GB microdrive, to be exact. They look pretty cool
and everything, but they're really most interesting because they are
the first consumer camcorder with a built-in hard drive, not because
they do anything particularly unique. That being said, I fully support
this idea, and think most consumer recording technology should move to
hard drives as soon as possible (I'll be waiting until you can get
something with a bigger hard drive than 4GB for less than $1,500,
though).
Both models (the GZ-MC100 and the GZ-MC200) can record up to 9Mbps
in MPEG2, though, which is DVD quality.

Memory Reading Hard Drive
06/30/2004 12:37 PM
The Vosonic X'S-Drive Pro VP 300 is 40GB external
hard drive that is clunky, cheap-looking, has a crappy text-only
integrated screen, plays MP3s, but not WMA, AAC, or OGG Vorbis, and
can only read from one card from its card reader at a time. So why
would any photographer want it? Because it's cheap, it does the
primary job it was designed to do (act as remote backup for memory
cards), and can accept as many additional 2.5-inch laptop hard drives
as you want to swap into it, meaning that all other things aside, you
can purchase this single $335 drive and continue to upgrade it for
only the price of additional hard drives.

The ability to make an emergency call has been given as the top reason
for taking a cell phone when traveling, according to a survey by
Mobal, the international phone company. Mobal conducted the survey of
its customers after reporting an 80% increase in international cell
phone purchase during 2004, and believe the results show that US
citizens, although still concerned with global instabilities, are
increasingly confident to travel internationally. [PRWEB Mar 31, 2005]
