The dream of sharing and streaming the music (and files) on your PDA/Phone to other PDA/phones, while tuning into your fellow train passengers' playlists is finially here.

The app described here wraps up a little web server with file sharing/streaming code, and auto-detects others running the same. So if you're on a bus, walking or whatever, you can pick up tunes from other passing people, and they can pick them up off you, all very easily (if they stick around long enough).

Now all I'm looking for is a method to borrow CPU cycles from them at the same time. Sure they can listen to my music, if I can use some of their CPU time in return. And if my PDA is sitting doing nothing, why not let them run a few calculations on it?

Simeda's CTO Razvan Dragomirescu showed me an interesting bit of software they're working on for PocketPC called 'Pocket Rendezvous,' a port of the Rendezvous easy networking system (commonly used by OSX applications, although it works just fine on PC, too). Using Pocket Rendezvous, users can set up a personal, auto-discoverable web servers for a variety of purposes, such as matchmaking services (think broadcasted business cards or personal ads), private music streaming (be the mysterious F train DJ!), or anything else a crafty developer can build on top of the Rendezvous setup (iTunes, for instance, uses Rendezvous to do the quick-sharing of music libraries). The software isn't released yet, though, and Razvan is looking for a few beta testers to give Pocket Rendezvous a swing before they officially launch the product in June. If you were to email, say razvan.dragomirescu then add one of those squiggly ear looking symbols to simeda.com, you could probably email him and he'd give you the details.

Earlier this year a company called Pocket PC Films announced a plug-and-play cartridge for watching videos and listening to music on the Game Boy Advance. At the time they said it would use SD memory cards, which meant you could just transfer files from your PC and later watch them on your GBA, but now they're backtracking a bit about what you'll be able to do with the Pocket Cinema Player. They've ditched the SD card slot altogether, and instead the adapter, which is due out in May of next year, will use special 3-inch discs and a proprietary video format. I4U has a review on the Mvisto DivX Player. Very similar indeed to the Wigobyte Mvolt-100 Media Flash we mentioned last week, it lacks the Mvolt's soft, supple curves but includes a 40GB hard drive. (It may very well be an OEM derivative of the Wigobyte device, actually.) The Mvisto excels in playing back DivX files on your TV and can even read ISO files, allowing you to copy full DVDs with playback of all its special features. The on-screen interface actually looks quite charming, and it's powered through its USB port. (You use an adapter to plug into the mains when playing back on your TV.) The review is overall very favorable and the Mvisto is only $325 through MacPower distributors, although you have to contact them to purchase a unit for now.
