Fashion Forward Nokia 6600 in Awful
Movie
09/09/2004 11:12 AM

kim_cell.jpg imageI didn't really want to see that new movie "Cellular" before, but after hearing that it's about "getting [viewers] to identify with the frustrations of the police officer as he attempts to track down and rescue Ms. Basinger" using a crappy Nokia cellphone, I sort of started thinking that was maybe a little too close to real life to want to have to experience vicariously. The portrayal of cellular service - including the customer service - is apparently so awful in the movie that none of the American carriers approached allowed their service to be used in the film. I wonder if Kim Basinger sort of freaks out in the movie and twitches a lot like she does in real life? I would maybe pay to watch that.

Why the Nokia 6600 Might Be Better Than
a Treo
12/19/2004 03:01 PM

nokia_6600slate.jpg imagePaul Boutin has a nice write up of the Nokia 6600 over at Slate, putting that relatively staid phone up against the Treo 650 and explaining why the generally less-impressive Nokia might be a better choice for many. It all boils down to the beauty of Series 60, to me. Nokia may be a heartless ice queen running down freedom on her iron, lawyer-pulled sleigh, but she makes an amazingly polished operating system for phones. It's not as PC-like as Palm or Windows Mobile, but it puts the phone functions first, instead of hidden behind layers of intelligent abstraction. That's worth a lot—especially when the phones are essentially free.

Plus there's still plenty of whiz-bang to be had from a Series 60 phone. People still marvel that I can get to a terminal on a Nokia 3650 and that phone is like two years old. (Thanks, John!)

Nokia 6600 review

Nokia 6600 review 12/03/2003 08:36 PM
BoingBoing pal R. Emory Lundberg just reviewed the apparently ubergruven Nokia 6600:
[The] all-in-one organizer, information manager, and mobile communicator that you may have been waiting for. If the Nokia 3650 was too playful for your lifestyle, you should consider this handset as a way to communicate, organize, and lighten the load in your pocket. Generally I prefer separate devices. I really like the Palm Tungsten T3 (review) and find it a very capable tool. But there are times when I just want my schedule and contacts with me, and don't need to work on Office documents on the go, and the Nokia 6600 has quickly become my handset of choice.

I'm not 100% sure when it dropped to channel, but it looks like T-Mobile has started carrying the Nokia 6600, the Series 60 tri-band phone. Feature-wise, it's similar to many other Series 60 devices, albeit with a nicer 65,536-color screen than some of the earlier models (such as the popular...

New Nokias: Nokia 7280, Nokia 7270,
Nokia 7260
09/09/2004 09:00 AM

NOKIA_7280.jpg imageOkay, so Nokia just dropped three phones onto us, and they're pretty crazy, and by 'crazy' I mean 'sort of ugly.' I have to cop to sort of liking the Tron-style and the asymetrical design - the one round corner, one square corner 'new Nokia' look - but I have a feeling I'll be in the minority. Would it kill them to just release a nice, silver phone that you could take home to mom?

Anyway, here's the breakdown, and I'll probably go after this post in a couple of waves. The one pictured here is the Nokia 7280, which you might notice doesn't have a keypad. That's because Nokia designed it to be "sleek," "sexy," and "edgy." (I'm not joking.)

Sony VAIO U50 Review: Awful Laptop,
Great PDA

Sony VAIO U50 Review: Awful Laptop,
Great PDA
06/28/2004 09:35 PM

sony_u50_review.jpg imageIt catches eyes, that's for sure. I had forgotten to load the Sony VAIO U50 with any software before our flight home to Kansas City for the weekend, but since an unexpected storm front was blowing in from the north, we had almost two hours to kill while our plane sat, stranded on the tarmac of LaGuardia. Even scrolling through empty file systems was better than the airline magazine.

"Excuse me," said the man sitting next to me, and I turned too fast to respond, because I knew he had been staring. "What exactly is that thing, and can you play Spider Solitaire on it?"

Chinese Movie Industry Recognizes Movie
Watching Is A Social Experience

Chinese Movie Industry Recognizes Movie
Watching Is A Social Experience
03/22/2005 05:03 PM
Yesterday we noted that the MPAA and movie theater owners were whini ng about how much people coming in an taping movies was hurting their business. The obvious response, we pointed out, is to recognize that going to the movies is a social experience. It's not just about the content (though, that is important), but the overall experience. If they improved that, then people would want to go -- even if they could score the same movie off the internet or a cheap DVD bought off the street. While the folks in Hollywood refuse to entertain this idea, someone (anonymously) in the comments to that story pointed to an article in China noting that this is exactly what Chinese movie theaters have done. After years of declining attendance, they finally shaped up and made going to the movies cool again. They improved the overall experience, putting in better equipment and more comfortable seats. They improved the sound and the lighting as well. It sounds like they also made some theaters to be more like bars, to help attract young adults away from traditional bars. Yet the supposedly "creative" movie people in Hollywood insist "nothing can be done" to get people into the theater.

Sony's Librie e-book reader: great
display, awful DRM

Sony's Librie e-book reader: great
display, awful DRM
07/02/2004 01:11 PM
librieYuri Kageyama writes a glowing review of Sony's new ebook reader, which uses a new kind of display technology that rivals paper.I agree with Kageyama's assessment about the display technology. I played with a Librie when I was in Tokyo last month. The screen is remarkable. The display uses little balls that are painted black and white, containing the same pigments found in laser printer toner cartridges for black, and in sunblock and paint for white. Once you turn on the display and a page of text or graphics appear, it doesn't need refreshing. The only time the batteries get used is when you load a new page. (The technology was developed by a U.S. company, E-Ink.) I did notice that sometimes you could see the ghost of the previous page, especially on model I tried that had a comic book loaded on it. I wonder if that's a general problem, or if the one I played with was a dud?

I didn't Kageyama wasn't harsh enough about the hideous proprietary locked format the Librie uses for books. He wrote, "I'm not wild about buying books that self-destruct after 60 days." This self-destruct feature is sickening. Who would buy a Librie with this deadly defect built in? (Sony is making a similar mistake with its music players.) I hope somebody with a sensible DRM policy starts using these great display screens. Link

256MB version of 6600 to come

256MB version of 6600 to come 09/11/2004 03:58 AM
IT'S TOO EXPENSIVE to build a card that will have 500/1000MHz clock and still have more than 128MB memory and sell it for less than $200. At least this is how Nvidia feels. A 128 Mbit memory clocked to 1000MHz still costs too much. As for a 6600 standard card clocked at 300MHz core and only 500 MHz memory it won't be any problem to make a 256MB card and sell it to all that worship at the altar of massive amounts of memory.
