08/03/2004 06:10 PMNewsFactor - For many road warriors, portability is the No. 1 feature
considered when purchasing a new notebook computer. Performance often
takes a back seat to weight and form factor, with some of the more
popular ultra-portable notebooks released in the last 12 months
weighing in between 3 and 4 pounds each.

Sony VAIO M
09/13/2004 09:00 AM
Sony has a new one of those desktop VAIOs designed
to replace a TV, this time called the VAIO M. It's not that
spectacular, features-wise, with the notable stand-out of a
"Multidrive" super-burner that can handle not only DL (dual-layer)
DVDs but DVD-RAM as well (if you don't know what that is, you probably
don't need to). It has a horrible 32MB video card, though, and the
form factor makes it impossible to upgrade - it's basically a laptop
in desktop clothing - but that's not what it was designed for anyway.
It's a neat form factor, but I don't think I'd ever buy one.

Handtops is reporting that Sony is pulling the
attractive, if niche Sony U50/U70 mini-tablet computer, despite the
fact that it was just introduced to the market a few months ago. It
was a great device, but I would not be surprised in the least if they
weren't selling very well, since they were essentially a $2000 - 3000
toy. A great toy, mind you, but a toy nonetheless.

HandtopHQ review the Sony VAIO U50 mini PC, the
little 900MHz computer stuffed into a black, paperback-sized slab.
He's a little more positive about it than I was, claiming that anyone
who can afford one will probably want to use it as an entertainment
device, a function at which it excels. I say that's a cop out argument
and the thing is still to expensive to warrant the sort of rough
handling a portable media device (full-blown computer or not) is going
to get.

Vaio Spring 2005 Desktop Lineup
01/05/2005 01:46 PM
Having just talked about the new Vaio laptops, I
somehow feel obligated to mention the new Vaio desktops. But are they
really new? No.
On the very high end of things is the Vaio type R desktop, with a
3.8 GHz CPU, two 250GB hard drives (intertwined by RAID 0,
nonetheless), and 1GB of RAM. It also includes a 20" LCD, which when
you think about the 460,000 yen price tag (about $4,400 USD), is
entirely understandable.
Working our way down the ranks, through the two other type R
models, three type HX models, three type V models, and two type M
models, we finally reach the bottom of the pack — the Vaio type
M "VGC-M31B/W" has a 15.4" screen, 2.7 GHz CPU, 256MB of RAM, and
integrated video (good 'ol SiS), and costs around 160,000 yen (about
$1,538 USD).

04/13/2004 08:46 AMJOEL JOHNSON -- Sony's VAIO PCG-FR415S is a middle- to low-end laptop

I think I misjudged when I saw the product release
about the new Sony VAIO T Series laptops, because I didn't figure
people would be that excited about them, but boy was I wrong, so let
me fix that oversight. The best thing about the new Centrino
sub-notebooks that I can see is that the 10.6-inch screens use Sony's
X-Brite LCD technology, which really is as good as they hype. If the
battery life and the keyboard are useable, we might just take one out
for a spin. I've yet to run into anything as hot as the Panasonic R3
yet, though, so they've got a tough row to hoe.
ChaitGear has the press release if you're into that whole
details thing.

With looks strikingly similar
to a lopsided Slinky, the Sony Vaio VGP-UMS50 is certainly a mouse for
those who prefer neither form nor function. Still, if I can
rest my drinks atop its smooth, black surface, I might give it a
passing consideration. Available on April 23rd, the AV translation

about its ergonomic benefits, so there's that.

absolutely gushes over the Sony VAIO VGN-X505VP, and really, how can
you blame them? The X505VP is Sony's super-slim ultra-portable, just
21mm at its thickest and 11mm at its thinnest ends. With a 1.1GHz
Pentium M, 512 MB RAM, a bundle of extra hardware including a
multi-format memory card reader, DVD burner, and carrying case, as
well as included (but not integrated) 802.11g, there's really not
questioning the fact that the X505 is one of the world's most
desirable laptops. If I had a spare $3,700 around that I hadn't
already allocated for eight balls, the wafer thin mint would already
be mine.

I should warn you: I'm sort of
lukewarm on portable video players altogether. I don't commute to
work, and when I did, there was enough jostling and train swapping to
make anything that required focused attention, like reading books or
watching video, a fractured and annoying experience. But still, there
is an opportunity for a video player like the HMP-A1 to be useful -- I
just don't think this would be the one I would buy.

07/06/2004 01:56 AMThe new VAIO PC is both powerful and quiet. With plenty of expansion
room and an amazing liquid heat-pipe cooling system, this computer is
sure to turn some heads. Included is software that allows you to

on this system has speed controls so that you can take the decibels

Sony VAIO Pocket Review, iPod Comparison
06/09/2004 09:10 AM
If you want to stumble through the Babelfish
translation, AV Watch Japan has a review of the Sony VAIO Pocket, the
hard disk-based music player that's getting the most buzz as Sony's
attempt to create an iPod-killer. Among other things, they compare
sizes (!), and really that battery nodule on the back of the VAIO
Pocket does it a disservice in pictures -- it's not nearly as big as
it seems. Of course, the chink in the VAIO Pocket's armor is its
inability to play any format but Sony's proprietary ATRAC3, meaning
every song you want to copy to the VAIO Pocket has to be converted.
20GB of conversion is going to be sucky, but manageable; it's really
just the principle of the thing (even Apple, head up their AAC, lets
the iPod play MP3).

Apex has added a nice
looking 8.4-inch widescreen DVD player to their lineup, called the
PD-840. It plays DVDs, music, all that good stuff, with a projected
battery life of 2.5 hours -- not long enough for two movies, but
probably just long enough for one. Although portable DVD players are
the sort of product that has very limited appeal to me -- if I'm not
watching them at home, they I'll probably be watching on a laptop -- I
know some people, especially people with kids, get a lot of mileage
out of them. My own family has chewed through at least two in the last
couple of years keeping my young brother entertained.
Should be available late summer for around for (a too pricey)
$325.
