Asono Play Ditches the Screen

Asono Play Ditches the Screen 06/24/2005 04:01 PM

asono_play.jpgAsono has released a tweaked version of their 'Mica' wearable MP3 player. Called the 'Play,' the unit is almost exactly the same as the Mica—it still looks like a little handbag—but the LCD screen on the bottom of the Mica has been replaced with two, iPod shuffle-like lights at the bottom in the Play. Navigation is don't through sound, including (they say), searching of folders and EQ adjustment. I can't imagine how'd they allow folder search with two LEDs and some beeps, but I didn't think you could build furniture out of sawdust, either, and the Scandinavians proved me wrong.

RIAA Ditches Meaningless Amnesty Program

RIAA Ditches Meaningless Amnesty Program 04/19/2004 09:57 PM
Last fall, before the RIAA actually started suing people for sharing unauthorized music files, they offered their amnesty program, which basically said if you 'fessed up to sharing music and removed those files immediately, they probably wouldn't sue you. Of course, they couldn't guarantee that the actual copyright holders wouldn't sue - and in admitting guilt to the RIAA some felt that people would actually open themselves up to more liability for exactly that reason. In fact, even a US Senator, Norm Coleman, told people not to fall for the program and some people filed a lawsuit against the program, saying that it was deceptive. Well, now the RIAA (as they've been known to do) has asked that the lawsuit be dismissed because they've recently canceled the amnesty program. Of course, that makes you wonder. Is it okay to offer a "deceptive" program for a few months, and then ask that lawsuits against it are dropped once you stop? Doesn't that just encourage more temporary deceptive programs? The article also notes, by the way, that over 1,100 people actually signed up to request such not-really-amnesty. The RIAA promises that they'll continue to not sue those individuals, though, they still can't make the same promise for the actual copyright holders.

The French government has put its money where its mouth is and announced a deal to replace 1,500 copies of Microsoft NT server with home-grown open source Linux software from Mandrake. Several government departments, such as the Ministry of Culture, already use MandrakeLinux. But it recently said it was considering expanding its use of open source software. The Civil Service Minister Renaud Dutreil was quoted as saying 'the competition is open,' between Microsoft and Linux.

"Re-elect George W. Bush" plane ditches

"Re-elect George W. Bush" plane ditches
in Florida
12/17/2004 06:35 PM
A huge twin-engine turboprop (jet-powered propeller) Convair 340 cargo plane with a max take-off weight of 47,000 lbs. ditched in a Florida lake.  The pilots swam away unharmed.  The photos of the incident are interesting because they show "Re-elect George W. Bush" painted across the entire length of the fuselage.  Supposedly this was caused when one engine failed and the pilots were unable to hold altitude so decided to land in the lake rather than on top of some houses.  If true, this is consistent with the old pilot adage about twin-engine planes that "the second engine carries you to the scene of the accident".

VA Ditches Half A Billion Dollar Useless
Computing System

VA Ditches Half A Billion Dollar Useless
Computing System
07/28/2004 04:22 AM
Last week, we noted some of the probl ems the Federal Technology Service was having getting their very expensive computer system to actually work (it had something to do with not actually training people to use it) that was causing all sorts of delays and problems (including crying employees). Not surprisingly, this isn't the only example of completely wasteful spending on large computing systems from government agencies. The Department of Veterans Affairs has now announced plans to ditch their $472 million computer system that was designed to be used in VA hospitals across the country. Luckily, it appears that they have not yet spent all of that money, as this particular installment was just a test at one location in Florida. Now, however, the hospital is switching back to their old computer system. Problems with the system meant a shortage of surgical supplies and delayed operations (ouch). Once again, a lack of real training seems to be part of the problem. Even worse, there are reports that BearingPoint, who build the system received an extra $200,000 for finishing the project "on time." Of course, in order to finish it on time, they skipped that whole pesky training part. Just one example of poorly designed "incentives" for projects.

Symantec Finally Ditches Faulty
Antivirus Bounceback Spam

Symantec Finally Ditches Faulty
Antivirus Bounceback Spam
05/11/2004 06:09 PM
We first mentioned this problem nearly a year ago, though others have been talking about it for longer. Email viruses these days tend to spoof the "from" address and make it either something random or someone else's address from the same addressbook they're spamming. Since so many network antivirus systems have been setup to alert the sender if they're sending a virus, this means plenty of innocent people get slamm ed with antivirus spam from antivirus systems telling them they sent out a virus - when they did no such thing. Symantec seems to have finally gotten the message and agreed to make their antivirus systems stop sending back email warnings. Other antivirus vendors are expected to follow suit.

McDonald's Ditches Giant Vending
Machines, Back To Dealing With Humans

McDonald's Ditches Giant Vending
Machines, Back To Dealing With Humans
11/13/2003 02:55 PM
Almost exactly a year ago we wrote about how giant vending machines were coming to the US. These were vending machines the size of small shops, that could pick from over 200 items to drop into your hand at your convenience - without having to deal with (gasp!) a human checkout person. It turns out that many of these machines were actually being run by McDonald's who has now decided that the US market just isn't ready for giant vending machines, which are being shut down. Perhaps there were complaints from teenaged kids who were scared that the vending machines were going to take away their only hope for a job.
