Should we eradicate mosquitos?
Should we eradicate mosquitos?
06/22/2004 11:35 PMInteresting NYT piece about the environmental pluses and minuses of
eradicating mosquitos.
Another value of mosquitoes, perverse to some, obvious to others, is
that they "keep out the riffraff," meaning human beings.
Concentrations of pests offer protection to wilderness areas. The
tsetse fly, which causes livestock disease as well as human sleeping
sickness, has kept humans away from some wildlife refuges and has been
called "Africa's best conservationist." Of course, this view has been
described by others as ecological imperialism.

Eradicate Hose Abrasion
Eradicate Hose Abrasion
09/22/2004 02:18 AMBlacoh Fluid Control recently was contacted by a large manufacturer of
bulk chemicals. The pulsation generated by their AODD pumps caused the
hose to shake back and forth, scuffing the hose on the concrete floor,
and causing “hose abrasion”. Ultimately, these hoses would fail from
abrasion due to the scuffing action. This failure meant considerable
downtime, lost product, extensive clean-up, and hose replacement – all
of which came with an associated cost. [PRWEB Sep 22, 2004]

McAfee Sneakiness
McAfee Sneakiness
02/10/2004 02:49 AMI'm noticing some serious sneakiness on the part of McAfee.
I run SpamKiller,
and I'm quite happy with it. However, I'm not thrilled with apps
trying to check for updates all the time, so I've disabled the
auto-update feature.
Recerntly, I installed
Startup Monitor. Since then, I've been getting sporadic reports
that an executable called MCUpdate.exe is trying to add a registry
entry for itself to run on start-up. These would pop up at random
intervals throughout the day.
At the same time, I'm noticing a Scheduled Task that refuses to
stay deleted. It's a McAfee update job that I delete daily, but that
keeps reappearing. What does it run? MCUpdate.exe.
So SpamKiller must check for this task, and re-add it if it doesn't
find it in the Scheduled Tasks. Then this task must check for the
start-up registry entry, then try to add it if it doesn't find it.
Like I said, sneaky.

McAfee VirusScan 9 Goes After Spyware
McAfee VirusScan 9 Goes After Spyware
07/14/2004 01:44 AMThe question of how to deal with spyware and adware is particularly
challenging when programs users desire -- such as Kazaa -- require
spyware components in order to operate. In its upcoming release of
VirusScan, McAfee is attempting to address that very question. In
developing the next iteration of VirusScan, McAfee's software
engineers have made it their number one priority to enhance the
detection and removal of spyware, adware and other malware. However,
detection is only one part of the equation.
