Rave-MP AMP 128 Flash Player Reviewed 09/08/2004 10:24 AM

rave_amp128.jpg imageI used to hate flash memory players, but I'm coming around, and for one single reason: they're a commodity now. Being cheap - this Rave-MP AMP 128 reviewed by PCWorld is only $100, and will go for even less soon - means that I can keep a flash player around as a backup to a hard-disk player, something to take out into the rain maybe or throw in a bag that's going to get roughed around, and never give it a second thought. Plus 1GB SD cards a sickeningly cheap these days (sickening when you consider how much money you spent on flash memory in the past).

What sells the AMP 128 specifically, though? I dunno, really - the feature set on these things is almost exactly the same these days - but it does have that inverted-color display, which I saw in person a few weeks back, and is actually pretty cool.

Wal-Mart iLo Flash Player Reviewed 12/22/2004 01:36 AM

ilo_review.jpg image"When Gizmodo speaks, people listen." And then void themselves, as we broadcast the same colliding frequency undertones played at a GWAR concert. But besides the big squishy handjob that Gadget Madness gives us, this review of the iLo Digital Audio Player—that new $80 Wal-Mart special—gets 'er done (to use official Wal-Mart parlance). I wish the 256MB player could accept SD cards bigger than 512MB, but for a cut-rate player it looks like they do almost everything right. Rather than cluttering it up with fancy, but half-assed engineered software, they just make a simple player that works with Macs and PCs.

Muzio JM-200 Flash Player Reviewed 08/09/2004 07:27 AM

muziojm200_buttons.jpg imageI4U reviews the Muzio JM-200 flash player, a run-of-the-mill music player with a few stand out features, like a physically spinning volume wheel, two-color OLED screen, and the ability to add your own custom graphics to the front of its display. Other than that we're looking at what has become almost stock standard on flash players, including an FM tuner with recording, voice and line-in recording, and TrueBass (something so common I rarely even bother mentioning it).

Another nice thing - and this is going to start being standard pretty much soon - is the JM-200 is a USB host device, meaning it's conceivable you could hook this music player directly into your camera (or whatever) and copy over files. Oh! And you can listen from two sets of headphones into a single unit.

I guess this isn't quite as stock standard as I had let on.

AOpen MVP Player Reviewed 08/02/2004 08:31 AM

aopen_mvp_player.jpg imageThe AOpen MVP Player does something that lots of other set-top boxes have done -- display video and image files on your television -- and given it a little twist, mainly by making the hard drive modular. That means instead of stringing network cable or setting up WiFi, you can take the hard drive enclosure (that takes 2.5-inch laptop drives) over to your PC and load it up with data over USB 2.0. It might not be the most elegant solution, but it's certainly different, and that has to count for something. Plus it has memory card reader slot, presumably for copying data from those to the hard drive.

Trusted Reviews says the AOpen MVP Player is still a little rough around the edges, but it does do what it is designed to do well. Not a bad deal for around $160; although you'll have to buy the hard drive yourself.

gba_av_may.jpgGadgetMadness reviews May Flash's simple GameBoy Advance A/V Adapter. Just put the cartridge into your player, plug your nearest video-producing device's RCA jacks into the cartridge, and have at it. Brightness, contrast and volume are controlled using the GameBoy's buttons, as well as hue and saturation. A major let down for GadgetMadness was the fact that the unit requires you to use headphones plugged into the cartridge to hear the sound passing through it—it's unable to play the sound through the unit's speakers. Of course, the unit is only a pass-through itself, so you'll have to be carrying a battery-powered set-top DVD player in your backpack for this to be of any good, but it allows you to use your GameBoy's screen for nearly any purpose you can find around the house. Probably not a bad way to go for some hacky projects, but not for mobile video.

Gateway's Connected DVD Player (ADC-320) may just be a rebranded GoVideo Networked DVD player, but don't let that dissuade you from checking it out, especially if you have an affinity for oddly colored tan and gray consumer electronics. Available in wired and wireless versions, the ADC-320 can stream your video files from your PC or network hard drive, decoding a variety of formats [MPEG1/2/DivX/Xvid, AVI/DVR-MS] and doing all the normal fanciness you'd expect from a $200 DVD player.

I like DesignTechnica's reviews when they actually get around to doing them. I wish they'd get off their ass and do them more often.

mpm_soroban.jpg image

SorobanGeeks' Portable Media World has a killer review of the MPM-20X from NHJapan, a (duh) portable media player with a built-in 30GB hard drive. One of the best things about the MPM-20X is the fact that it can record via direct from a video source, instead of being reliant on a computer to get its video files (although you can do that, too, of course). The complete package looks very nice, with a full-featured dock and a lot of smart design choices (like a kick stand!), as well as the freedom that comes from not being tied into Microsoft's Portable Media Center system.

So why does PMW recommend to pass on the MPM-20X? The heart of the device, the LCD screen, is pants. Ugly, grainy, washed-out pants.

sony_mz-nh600.jpg imageSony's new Hi_MD MiniDisc players are creeping onto the market, and while most of us have passed over MiniDisc for bigger and presumably better things, the Hi-MD will let proponents of the standard eke along for a while longer, with 1GB of storage per disc and up to 45 hours of music at the lowest, crappiest compression rate. I don't feel like I have to throw up a bunch of MiniDisc disclaimers at this point -- if you're interested in the new low-end Sony MZ-NH600 player, for instance, you probably already know what you're getting into. Australian IT has the review, and except for the overly complicated 5-way controls, they give the plastic player a generally passing grade.

mega_2104full.jpg imageTrusted Reviews has taken the MSI Mega 516BT Bluetooth flash player out for a spin, yet despite a load of improvements over the previous models, like the addition of an SD/MMC expansion slot and the hard-to-miss Bluetooth, they still find it to be overall a dud. It's not that the potential isn't there. When it works, features like the ability to record calls into the player while using it as a Bluetooth headset are pretty great, but an uneven user interface and spotty success with some of the phones they tested it with make it look as if this player might be one to pass over unless you're in dire need of the handful of unique features it offers.

Wireless in music players isn't a bad idea. Why, according to The Register, even Apple thinks so.

NoDRM takes a(nother) look at one option, the D-Link DSM-320 Wireless Multimedia Player, an 802.11g-enabled streaming media outlet that can stream not only audio, but all sort of different kinds of video -- most of the major video formats in fact (even DVD VOB files). The only real downside they see to the $166 player is the inability to change the aspect ratio of video (which can lead to movies looking oddly smushed) and the inability of 802.11g to always provide enough bandwidth to stream video over even relatively short distances, say, from a downstairs computer to an upstairs Multimedia Player. Of course, you can always fall back on wired Ethernet.

It's got a less-than-optimal visual interface, a slow USB 1.1 connection, and sub-par syncing software. It can play video, though, which is somewhat unique for a flash player in this category, but I'm not sure that party trick is going to make it worth the price. Very similar indeed to the Wigobyte Mvolt-100 Media Flash we mentioned last week, it lacks the Mvolt's soft, supple curves but includes a 40GB hard drive. (It may very well be an OEM derivative of the Wigobyte device, actually.) The Mvisto excels in playing back DivX files on your TV and can even read ISO files, allowing you to copy full DVDs with playback of all its special features. The on-screen interface actually looks quite charming, and it's powered through its USB port. (You use an adapter to plug into the mains when playing back on your TV.) The review is overall very favorable and the Mvisto is only $325 through MacPower distributors, although you have to contact them to purchase a unit for now.

iaudiou2.jpg imageKorea-based iAudio (whose products sell in the West under the Cowon and JetAudio brands) has released a new flash MP3 player model, the U2, which is slightly smaller than a lighter, but is still available in sizes up to one gigabyte. All the other goodies we've come to expect from flash players are there, too (FM receiver and recording, USB 2.0, irritating burning sensation), and still the U2 manages a (claimed) 20 hour battery life -- rechargeable battery, that is, not AAA like many other flash players.

Looks okay! I've been very cool on flash players, having been disappointed by so many for so long, but they are getting very usable and very useful now that storage sizes have gotten affordable. At $350 it's still spendy compared to hard disk players, but come on; the thing isn't much bigger than many players' in-line displays.
