06/28/2004 04:49 PM
“infamous41md has reported some vulnerabilities in the Linux kernel, which potentially can be exploited by malicious, local users to cause a DoS (Denial of Service) or gain escalated privileges. Various functions in the IEEE 1394 driver contain integer overflows within the memory allocation scheme. This can potentially be exploited via specially crafted requests, which may cause a large amount of data to be copied into an insufficiently sized buffer.”

FCC Approves TiVoToGo

FCC Approves TiVoToGo 08/05/2004 08:45 AM

tivo logo imageAlthough public policy isn't really our niche, there are occasional bits of regulation that are notable for the future products they herald, like the approval yesterday by the FCC of a plan by TiVo to allow sharing of recorded content to up to 10 other users via a new service called TiVoToGo. The first implementations will probably be local network -- sending to other TiVos and PCs around your house -- but there's certainly the possibility that sharing over the internet could be implemented, as well.

Unless the approval gets shut down by the numerous groups protesting the approval -- something not as likely as I at first thought, as at least nine other DRM-encumbered sharing schemes were approved in addition to TiVos, creating sort of an insta-lobby -- we probably won't pay this too much mind until products using the TiVoToGo service are implemented. But we thought you might at least like to know it's coming.

IEEE Approves Most Recent 802.16

IEEE Approves Most Recent 802.16 06/28/2004 12:59 PM
">The IEEE ratified the 802.16-2004 standard, marking a milestone in the development of the standard: Still, there's a long way to go. This article doesn't draw the distinction between 802.16 and WiMax. Now that the IEEE has ratified what had been called 802.16d, the WiMax Forum must still release its final specification for WiMax, which will be essentially a subset of the larger standard. Products built to the WiMax specification that get approved by the WiMax Forum can be assured to be interoperable with other WiMax gear. The IEEE ratification is an exciting milestone but the reality of a WiMax market in the United States is much farther in the future than some writers and industry followers acknowledge. This article notes that WiMax approved equipment should be available early next year. That's true, but basically all manufacturers will build their first generation products to operate in frequencies used overseas, not in the United States. It also remains to be seen how the final specifications--802.16 and WiMax--will affect folks like Alvarion. Alvarion is offering products today that it promises to upgrade to meet the final WiMax specification without additional cost to customers. Glenn described the whole process a couple weeks ago. One additional thought on Alvarion's decision to offer free upgrades is that they've taken a bit of a risk here but didn't have much of a choice. Some analysts have told me that some vendors are feeling a bit of a squeeze as potential customers are deciding to wait for certified WiMax equipment. In the meantime, the vendors aren't selling any gear. So Alvarion took the risk that they could make a reasonable guess at what the final specification would look like. They're hoping that they are close enough that they don't have to make major, expensive upgrades in the future to make the products WiMax compatible....

Senate approves PIRATE act

Senate approves PIRATE act 06/26/2004 02:42 AM
Today, the U.S. Senate approved a proposal that will give federal prosecutors the power to file civil lawsuits against suspected copyright infringers -- penalties include fines up to hundreds of thousands of dollars.
The so-called Pirate Act has raised alarms among copyright lawyers and lobbyists for peer-to-peer companies, who have been eyeing the recording industry's lawsuits against thousands of peer-to-peer users with trepidation. They worry that the Department of Justice could be even more ambitious.

Senate leaders scheduled Friday's vote under a procedure that required the unanimous consent of all members present. Now the Pirate Act, along with a related bill that criminalizes using camcorders in movie theaters, will be forwarded to the House of Representatives for approval.

ATA over Ethernet driver 10 (For Linux
2.6 branch)
04/11/2005 05:14 PM
This driver allows the Linux kernel to use the ATA over Ethernet (AoE) network protocol. Using AoE, a Linux system can use AoE block devices like EtherDrive (R) storage blades. The block devices appear as local device nodes (e.g. /dev/etherd/e0.0).
Changes:
A bugfix makes the driver record the new MAC address when a new EtherDrive blade is inserted into the same shelf and slot from which a previous blade has been removed. The firmware version of each aoe device is now visible through a "fwver" file in sysfs.
