What if they had outlining back then?
What if they had outlining back then?
07/01/2004 04:59 PMDavid Weinberger writes.....
I've started re-readi
ng Aristotle's Metaphysics (although if "re-reading" implies any
serious memory of the first time, then we should remove the "re-")
with an eye towards the role of categories and tree-like
organizational structures. So far, that's turning out to be an oddly
useful (= consistently distorting) lens.
In Book Beta, Aristotle is still examining how others have
approached the problem of what things are. Previous philosophers have
made the mistake, he argues, of thinking that principles and classes
have to be independent things; in fact, they believe principles are
the most real and the most eternal. But then you end up with the
"greatest absurdity" [997b.5, p. 46], he says, for you've divided
beings into an individual and the principle that makes the individual
into what it is, and you have no way of getting them back together.
Worse, it's the individuals that are most real (despite Plato),
but if all we have are individuals, there's no possibility of
knowledge:
If there is nothing apart from concrete individuals,
and if these are infinite, how is a science of infinite individuals
possible? For whatever things we come to know, we come to know in so
far as they are one or the same, and in so far as some general
attributes belongs to them all. [998a, 23, p. 51]
But it isn't possible that the condition for knowing is
incompatible with the nature of being. Can we get to something
general enough to count as knowledge without denying that to be is to
be an individual?
Aristotle says predecessors failed at this. Those that say
principles are real beings are needlessly multiplying entities and
can't explain what it means for an individual to "participate" in a
principle, And, he argues, it doesn't help to point to the constituent
elements of things because if that's all you have, you can't
understand what makes a bed into a bed; for that you have to see how
the parts are put together and understand that a bed is for
sleeping...a purpose not contained in the sum of constituent elements.
But, even if we agree that knowledge of a thing is knowledge of
what kind of thing it is, how general should the kind be? Do you look
at its most immediate genus, or do you look at the root of the tree to
see the primary genus? [998b.15, p. 49]
...what many beings have in common cannot itself be a
this-somnething, but is a "what"; whereas a primary being is a
"this." If we were permitted to supposed that what is predicated in
common is itself a this-something, then Socrates would be many
animals: himself and "man" and "animals"...These are the consequences
of supposing principles to be general. But if they are not general,
but individuals, they are not knowable; for knowledge of anything is
general. Hence, if there is to be knowledge of such principles, there
must be other principles prior to them, namely, what is general to
them. [1003a.8, p. 60]
These are the problems that arise from assuming that being and
knowability are one (an assumption we moderns don't make; we assume
that things are apart from how we know them), and not yet seeing how
categories can be different in kind from the things they categorize.
We don't have a problem saying that Socrates is a human and an
animal because we see that — looking upward — categories can be
nested and inherit properties from their containers, and — looking
downward — how categories can emerge from what the contain, just as
beds emerge from constituent elements. Through the odd lens I'm using,
reading this chapter feels like watching the birth of the level of
abstraction required to make nested categories work.

While there are similarities between I
nstant
Outlining (IO) and Wikis, there are subtle differences.
Instant Outlining
is more about people and relationships where Wikis are more about
documents and collaboration.
Instant Outlining is more about now and
decentralization where
Wikis are more about history and centralization.
I think the two can be combined to get the full benefits of both: a
beast with multiple
heads of Instant Outlines and the body of a Wiki with full
versioning support. Ross,

Cory Doctorow:
The FDA has approved research into whether Ecstasy should be used in
palliative care of terminal cancer patients to ease their final days.
The Food and Drug Administration has approved a pilot study looking at
whether the recreational hallucinogen can help terminally-ill patients
lessen their fears, quell thoughts of suicide and make it easier for
them to deal with loved ones.
"End of life issues are very important and are getting more and more
attention, and yet there are very few options for patients who are
facing death," Dr John Halpern, the Harvard research psychiatrist in
charge of the study, said.
The small four-month study is expected to begin early next spring. It
will test the drug's effects on 12 cancer patients from the Lahey
Clinic Medical Centre in the Boston area. The research is being
sponsored by the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic
Studies, a non-profit group that plans to raise 250,000 (-184,816) to
fund it.

The Wailing Wall
The Wailing Wall
03/08/2004 11:19 PM
Expats snarfing down a late night snack from a local grilli between
pints of beer.
I hang out on an English speaker's/Expat bulletin board I
affectionately call The Wailing
Wall. Lately there seems to be surge in bright-eyed young yankees
looking to escape the US, a trend I expect to only gather in strength
as the election approaches. I'd like to think I prepared myself for
some of the challenges of moving to Finland reasonably well though
there have been days I've pondered buying a plane ticket home.
However, given a few of the wailers from North America on IESAF and
some of the hopefuls trying to escape the return to Mayberry that the
US is careening towards, I'm going to rant a little bit on how not to
be an idiot asshole yankee expat in the vain hope that it diminishes
some of the incoming schadenfreude fodder. It'll just feel good to
rant, too. :)
-
Don't announce that you're too young to drink in the US and that
you're gunning for being able to booze it up with your teenage
girlfriend without having to provide ID. Budweiser is 3 euro [$3.60]
per bottle here and with the money you save by staying home, buying a
fake ID and going to Costco for a $5.99 24-pack, you could buy an
education you so desperately need.
-
Don't ask us all to provide you with job contacts just because
you're young, just managed to graduate from Podunk U., have a job at
Circuit City and think that Nokia would surely hire you if only they
knew you were available. When we tell you that the only difference
between a Mexican in SoCal and expats in Finland is that the Mexican
has more job opportunities, we're not really joking and, no, we're not
trying to be a bummer, man.
-
Don't post in the most appallingly bad English which makes an
illiterate monkey look like Shakespeare and expect us to take you
seriously when you say that you're 'good with languages' and that
learning Finnish 'shouldn't be a problem'. When the folks whose 3rd
language is English and who speak, read and write your native language
better than you seem appalled, you should maybe stay home and take a
remedial English course.
-
Don't come to us with tales of woe about how your teenage Finnish
girlfriend you met on IRC whom you're sure you want to marry is giving
you the cold shoulder and that she surely couldn't be dumping you when
she says she wants more space.
-
Don't ask if we're enjoying the cold weather. It's not the cold that
gets to you, it's the dark, dark, dark November that does. This time
of year is practically balmy and sunny.
-
Don't whine about Finnish food. This is Finland and this is their
food. Fucking deal with it, bribe someone for a care package or go the
hell home.
-
Don't whine about the taxation. You're going to get taxed by two
governments. Your bitching about it isn't going to change the fact
that you're gonna pay. Keep reaching for that bar of soap and shut the
hell up.
-
Don't gripe about how quiet and unfriendly Finns are. Maybe you're
just an asshole and they're just uninterested in making small talk. If
you shut up long enough, they talk.
-
Don't bemoan how expensive stuff is here as nothing gets cheaper
once people have paid the higher price, i.e. the market is already
paying, so your boring diatribe about frightful prices is about as
likely to lower prices as pissing in the wind and getting your pants
moist.
-
Don't rail on the Finnish government until you're a citizen or at
least have lived here a few years, as you are merely a guest in the
country and we've heard it all before. Bitching about the US
government, however, is more than welcome.
-
Don't ask us if we think you're crazy if you want to move to Finland
as we aren't always sure of that answer for ourselves.
-
Don't get pissy when I rant about expats who irk the
crap out of me because they never seem to enjoy anything. What
ever happened to the country filled with people who sang 'we are the
world' and all that rot in the spirit of global understanding and
tolerance of other cultures? Cheer up and lighten up.
Familiarity breeds contempt. How accurate that is. The reason we
hold truth in such respect is because we have so little opportunity to
get familiar with it. -- Mark Twain
