Latest Spam Designed Only To Annoy
Spamhaus
12/02/2003 09:51 AMThe spammers have been getting angry lately, because it appears that
the work of many anti-spammers is actually somewhat effective. So,
instead of focusing on, perhaps, figuring out a way to market
legitimate products without pissing off just about everyone, the
spammers are spending their time trying to piss off anti-spam
organizations. Unfortunately, some of these attacks have worked, and
anti-sp
am sites have been shut down. The latest trick, though, isn't
designed to do much other than to annoy Steve Linford of Spamhaus. A
spammer is
sending out
spam, saying that you've successfully ordered a CD full of
child-porn and will be charged $100/month for it. They say that
if the order is a mistake, to contact them immediately - and, of
course, the address they give is a Spamhaus email. This is one step
up from the typical
joe job
of just sending out spam email with spoofed "from" headers of someone
the spammer doesn't like. While those attacks lead the "target" to
get bounces and a few angry replies, this version is specifically
designed to make people fire back. It's just that they're firing back
at the wrong target. Another article about this tactic says that this
is
a
victory of sorts, because it means that the anti-spam groups like
Spamhaus are clearly having an impact on the war against spam. If
Spamhaus wasn't making life more difficult for spammers, why would
they bother attacking them?

RealNetworks Struggles to Succeed
RealNetworks Struggles to Succeed
08/19/2004 01:53 AMAs covered here not
once, not
twice, but
three times,
RealNetworks just won't give up in its goal to do....what ever they're
doing. In short, RealNetworks wants iPods to play their format and
Apple doesn't. In response, RealNetworks created a hack for the iPod.
The war has begun. Now, RealNetworks has their own
"anti-Apple" site.
But that's not the half of it, MacMinute has
coverage on
the latest juicy events. It turns out that RealNetworks issued a
petition to ask Apple to allow their hack, but it was filled with
anti-RealNetworks comments. In response, RealNetworks created a new
petition that did not allow comments. Similarly, RealNetworks has
turned off comments at their "anti-Apple" site (how can this site be
"an invitation for your dialogue and thoughts" without comments?).
What really bothers me is that RealNetworks claims that Apple has
"land-locked" the iPod to the iTMS and the AAC format, but that simply
isn't true. The iPod can support AAC, MP3, WAV, AIFF, and Apple
Lossless. Take your pick.

Does Linux really need a "killer app" to

12/24/2004 01:11 PMIn the late 1990s, we thought Linux needed a "killer app" that would
make general PC users view Linux as a necessity the same way they
first viewed Windows as a necessity due to Microsoft Office. However,
a new direction in open source adoption seems to be emerging that
might require a re-think and a change in our perspective.

12/18/2003 01:06 PMVirtual Community Makes Open Source Encyclopedia
Succeedhttp://firstmonday.org/issues/issue8_12/ciffolilli/index.html
An open source encyclopedia seems to defy all logic.
Anyone can contribute -- and anyone can change, deface or erase the
information it contains. Yet Wikipedia is successful for several
reasons. First, it's being constructed by a purpose-built virtual
community, whose members share the same goals and passions. Another
factor is the low cost associated with IT and virtual communities. In
a way, technology has virtually eliminated transaction costs for
editing and updating information. This not only stimulates development
of the community and the project, it provides a full exploitation of
massive collaboration economies. Another secret of Wikipedia's success
is its "creative construction" of information, rather than a "creative
destruction" of it. Initially, some observers expected an endless war
among reliable contributions, as well as graffiti attacks that would
deface and delay the development of the Web site. In reality, that
hasn't happened. Every change made to every article is stored;
unapproved modifications can be undone with a single click. Thus,
hackers and graffiti artists waste more of their time and effort
trying to litter a page than administrators require to correct it.
Through this mechanism of editing and undoing meaningless changes or
graffiti, an evolutionary process is fostered. Among other results,
that means only the best contributions survive.
