In The Broadband Battle Between Speed
And Price, Customers Choose Price

In The Broadband Battle Between Speed
And Price, Customers Choose Price
12/09/2003 03:39 PM
Back in October we noted that DSL and cable providers were trying to differe ntiate themselves from each other. The DSL providers were focusing on being the low cost provider, while the cable guys wanted to be the high speed providers. At the time, we pointed out that this was likely to backfire on the cable companies. People like the speed of broadband, but for most applications there's a "good enough" speed - and many people want it more for the always on connection than the speed itself. It's looking like we were right. The latest study shows that, despite cable's commanding lead in the US, many more people are signing up for DSL these days because of the lower price. It's the basic "good enough" argument. What DSL offers is good enough for what most people want to do with their connections now. Also, the speed difference is minimal right now. You don't get that much faster speeds with cable, and there's not much you can currently do with that extra bandwidth. It used to be that people would sign up so they could download songs, but the music industry is cracking down on that enough that it's become less of a draw for many subscribers as well.

How Not To Price

How Not To Price 05/13/2004 09:23 PM
While the mainstream press picks up on the (boring) obvious story that Six Apart has released version 3.0 of their popular Movable Type blogging tool, they seem to be missing out on the bigger story: the pricing structure they set up is being almost universally trashed by loyal Mova ble Type Users. I've never used Movable Type so I have no opinion one way or the other on the software or whatever they decide to charge for it. However, it seems that they've screwed up one of the most basic rules in pricing: never take away features and charge for them. You can charge for new features - but taking away features that were included for free before always pisses off your most loyal customers. They feel suckered. They feel like you've pulled a bait and switch on them. In this case, many MT users set up multiple blogs with multiple authors. That's what the software encouraged them to do. Now, they're looking at the pricing and realizing to continue doing so on the new platform would cost them around $600. "Costs more for doing less" isn't a way to make users happy. One other rule of pricing: recognize the competition. There are an awful lot of blogging tools out there, and more are coming out every day. Not all of these are free, and people clearly pay to use certain tools. However, ignoring competitive pricing (as Six Apart appears to have done, since the prices they're offering are well above the competition) doesn't make much sense - especially when the switching costs really aren't that high. Anyway, it looks like Six Apart has gone into damage control mode, trying to explain that this is just a "developer release." However, they (of all people) should have known how their users would respond to this offering.

I noticed a small flood of Gnomedex registrations over the past couple of days, and I figured I was missing something. That seems to be the case, as we are moving the price up from $99 to $199 on April 15th (Tax Day)! It'll be $249 at the door, FWIW. If you're hungry for more information about the conference, the site should be up by April 5th. No real word on who's presenting and sponsoring yet, though. We're still taking suggestions....

The Price of Silence

The Price of Silence 01/04/2004 10:47 PM

I have been trolling around the iTunes Music Store lately looking for unusual things to catch my eye (or ear). Today I discovered that silence has a price. And as you would expect, that price is $.99. The above link may only work if you have iTunes installed. If so and you don't have it, go download it. It's a pretty good music player and it's free.

I think some of my friends with small children may actually see this as a pretty good deal.

Google's New Price

Google's New Price 08/18/2004 01:04 PM
  • Reuters: Google Slashes IPO, SEC OK Expected Today. Google Inc. slashed the size of its closely watched initial public offering nearly in half to less than $2 billion on Wednesday, splashing cold water on what has been touted as the hottest Internet IPO in years.
  • Cold water, no. But definitely a well-deserved rebuke by the investor community that was being asked to pay way too much in the first place. There's been a significant whiff of greed in the Google IPO saga, combined with some unfortunate arrogance on the part of the company. I'm glad to see that investors didn't buy the hype beyond a fairly sensible point. Even $80 sounds a little high to me, but it's at least in the not-totally-insane range.

    The Price of Perfection

The Price of Perfection 04/23/2004 09:33 AM

Joel on Software - Thursday, April 22, 2004: Joel makes some good points about how we programmers have a tendency to try make things perfect beyond any practical benefit. He's touched on this before as well, with a story about the Netscape refactoring.

Perfectionism is a very dangerous quality in business and in life, because by being perfectionist about one thing you are, by definition, neglecting another.

The three days I spent insuring that all icons in CityDesk 3.0 are displayed with perfect alpha-blended effects came at the price of having a web site where the descender of the "g" is not a hyperlink. And both are at the price of working on my next book, or writing another article for Joel on Software, or making CityDesk publish really big sites faster.
