Plant yourself in The Lemon Tree just off Trafalgar Sq and access the interweb for free, sitting at the window. There is an open access point that hasn't been chalked yet. It has nothing to do with the pub but thought you'd may as well have a pint! Enjoy. n.b. This point was open on friday night 16th April.

WLAN Switch in an Access Point

WLAN Switch in an Access Point 03/29/2005 11:28 AM
Xirrus launches its wireless LAN array: In a briefing last week, Xirrus executives explained that their product combines the utility of a wireless LAN switch with a single footprint that can coordinate frequency and signal pattern across as many as 16 channels using a combination of 802.11a and 802.11b/g with sectorized antennas. Gigabit Ethernet carries the traffic to and from the array; a redundant failover Gigabit Ethernet port and a 10/100 management port ensures throughput. The WLAN array comes in three configuration: four ports, eight ports, or 16 ports (models XS-3500, XS-3700, XS-3900). All three models can work in 802.11a, b, or g mode for each radio, with up to 12 for 802.11a and up to four for 802.11b/g. Xirrus has baseband-level control of the radios which allows them to adaptively and dynamically change the signal strength and antenna scope. Because they're sectorized, that means each radio can serve a greater distance if needed than the typical indoor omnidirectional antenna--or back off as the RF environment requires. The arrays have what are now required features of any switch: VLANs, multiple SSIDs per switch (up to 16), QoS, and assignment to VLAN based on authentication, SSID, or other factors. One of the radios on any model can be set to work as a monitor for security threats, like rogue access points. The arrays can be managed using Layer 3 tunneling with a centralized platform, the XM-3300, which can handle up to 500 WLAN arrays. Because there's an extra 10/100 interface, the management can be entirely out of band of the actual network traffic. The arrays are powered with 48-volt DC which requires either direct electrical wiring for an AC adapter or the use of DC power over Ethernet--not the standard kind, but their 48-volt variety--that ties into their Remote Power System (XP-3100) at over 300 feet of Cat 5 Ethernet cable. The Xirrus array is the logical extension of the WLAN switch concept. One of the early gating factors for WLAN switching was the necessity for all traffic to be routed from an access point back via Ethernet to a physical switch which had to manage all the data coming and going. While this added the benefit of VLAN-based roaming that was independent of a physical switch location, it also tied bandwidth to the computational and switching capacity of that centralized switch device. (Symbol's first "access port" system had only...

Ah, Yes, The Lamppost As A Wireless
Access Point
03/23/2005 08:20 PM
Stop me if you've heard this one before... A wireless technology company wants to put wireless access points up on lampposts all over the UK to establish wide area wireless data access. Of course, this was the same plan that Metricom had way back when with their Ricochet service (still in some sort of existence after being bought and sold by a bunch of different companies). In fact, I still think many lampposts around here have Ricochet boxes on them. In other words, this isn't a particularly new idea at all. Putting access points on lampposts just solves one (small) issue -- but doesn't answer many other questions, including how well the mesh technology works and (much more importantly) coming up with a decent business model.

Zyxel Adds PEAP in an Access Point

Zyxel Adds PEAP in an Access Point 06/17/2005 03:19 PM
Zyxel has released an AP with built-in 802.1X with PEAP: This all-in-one unit allows you to run a small office with WPA-Enterprise security using PEAP for up to 32 users. It's $179. In a press release, Zyxel claimed it was the first to offer PEAP-in-a-box. That accolade should go, however, to computer-maker Gateway which offered such a device last July (my review). Its Gateway 7001 series (802.11g for $299, a+g for $399) features built-in PEAP and built-in VLAN segregation. It has two Ethernet ports which allow physical network segregation as well as virtual. Gateway never capitalized on this advantage, and the product now seems overpriced. [link via Tom's Networking]...

Linksys WAP11: Worst Access Point Ever 04/09/2004 04:00 PM
A few weeks before I moved, my wireless access point started acting up. It has only become worse since then. Several times a day, it just sorta drops off the air and I get messages like this in syslog: eth1: New link status: AP Out of Range (0004) At which point I want to kill something. Inevitably, I can walk upstairs, power cycle it, and things come back to normal. Except that I usually drop all my connections because it...

Anecdotally, Hotels Use Free Access as a
Selling Point

Anecdotally, Hotels Use Free Access as a
Selling Point
03/06/2004 01:49 AM
On a drive this last week from Los Angeles to Seattle, I noticed more hotels advertising free high-speed Internet access than ever before: I drove with my brother-in-law and a border collie from Los Angeles to Seattle over 2 1/2 days, starting on "the 5" (which turns into "I-5" north of the great central valley), cutting over to 101 along the northern coast, and then cutting back to I-5 at Grants Pass, Oregon. I saw several hundred billboards and the front doors of many hotels and motels as we drove along. Unlike previous long trips I've taken in the last couple of years, Internet is now a major bullet point for travelers. Most of the signs that advertised Internet service noted that it was high-speed and free, as well. Taken in the context of the travelers who pass along the routes we took, I can see that those services are a big necessity. In our case, our one night in a hotel in Ukiah didn't lead us to broadband since we were traveling with a dog. We looked into one chain, but they only had smoking rooms. We stayed at an inexpensive Super 8 that had free local and toll-free calls. My ISP had a Ukiah number, astoundingly, and thus I paid nothing for access in any case....
