The NEW New Wave

The NEW New Wave

The NEW New Wave 09/07/2004 11:58 PM

Underground French Cinema (literally) Three days later, when the police returned accompanied by experts from the French electricity board to see where the power was coming from, the phone and electricity lines had been cut and a note was lying in the middle of the floor: "Do not," it said, "try to find us." A secret underground cinema is found in the Catacombs of Paris, "You guys have no idea what's down there." Perhaps it's the work of a group of cataphiles called the "Perforating Mexicans".

Somebody stole my rubber boots! I've been meaning to buy a new pair for ages now, and once I finally manage to drag my ass to the store and get them, some lard-ass, no-good, glue-sniffing punkboy steals them.

Why? I have no idea. They were in the trunk of the car, and what do I notice this morning? The bloody thieves did not stop at the boots, no! They had to take the sixpack of beer from the trunk as well AND the entire car.

*sigh*

If anyone happens to see a red VW Vento CL with license KIF-588, drop me a note, or gimme a call at zero-five-zero 547 6463. Or the police. Thanks.

wavepillow.jpg imageSurfers are a lazy, cowardly lot, but by nature also rather inventive. So rather than get up in the wee hours of the morning to check the waves, Elmar Trefz develop a special pillow that connects to a PC that vibrates depending on what wave conditions are like that morning. That way, if the breakers aren't even breaking, you can roll back over in your hut or cocoon or whatever it is that surfers nest in at night, and sleep until you have to go to "work." Using Technology To Do The Wave For You

Using Technology To Do The Wave For You 12/24/2004 12:18 PM
If there ever were a story made for the "Too Much Free Time" category, this one is probably it. A year in the making, yesterday was the unveiling of the very first SMSWave. If you're a sports fan, you're probably familiar with "The Wave" whether you like it or consider it to be ruining the sport (there are some who feel that way). This is where everyone in the stands is so bored by what's happening on the field that they stand up and sit down one after another in a pattern that makes it look like there's a wave going through the stands. Well, apparently that wasn't good enough for some people, who decided to update The Wave for the digital, mobile age. They set up a system where fans SMS their seat location to a specific phone number. The system then calculates where everyone is, and sets off their phones flashing and making noise in a pattern to make a similar wave effect in mobile phone noise and sound. Sounds lovely, right? Even better, they've now patented the idea, so don't go around trying to copy it yourself. Please. We'll all be better off.

Wave report from CHI '04

Wave report from CHI '04 06/01/2004 02:08 PM
CHI 2004
By John.N.Latta
Wa ve Issue 0420 05/28/04

April 27 - 39
Vienna, Austria

The WAVE Report found that CHI 2004 is refreshing in the diversity of thinking. In many respects, this is the product of looking into the future. It is also scary in that, if only a fraction of what is presented here comes to pass, the role of the box, or PC as we know it, will be substantially diminished. Such is the evolution of technology. The WAVE Report also believes that there is also myopia at CHI 2004. Much of what is show here needs a digital infrastructure, a topic we have written about extensively. Yet, the existence of such an infrastructure, at least in the near term, is problematic. Display technology is also taken for granted and large size displays at reasonable prices are still in the future.

We continue to look for how all this technology will make for better lives for individuals and families. Even here we saw some interesting clues. What makes CHI 2004 different is that it is focused on the human aspect of applying computing technology. Something we rarely see outside of this venue. In all these aspects CHI 2004 is refreshing - a hype less gaze into the future.

CHI 2004 Connect

It would appear at first glance, easy to dismiss this as an academic conference from a SIG of the ACM. But the same rapid dismissal would not apply to SIGGRAPH, the annual event in computer graphics, also from another ACM SIG. When it comes to the interaction between computers and humans, nearly all research leads to CHI. Thus, it is a barometer of activities which could define the future of computing and how humans will interact with these devices. With over 20 years of CHI conferences, it is not sampled in a day. However, our focus is more direct – trends in interaction devices and in particular the pen.

Yet, as one samples the threads here one cannot escape the following impressions:

There are shifts in the role of computing – away from the box to ubiquitous and pervasive computing environments;

Displays and mobile devices are but two artifacts of this shift, not the basis for it; and

The environment, including Ambient Intelligence, is another factor in this shift.

What is important is that the metaphors we associate with the computers interface now, such as the mouse and keyboard, do not directly associate with these new environments. As talks reflected here, the interface can be as simple as the eyes for observation, the feet, a pen and many others. The desktop is more of a boundary condition, not the environment of the future.

The Brazilian wave

The Brazilian wave 06/30/2004 02:45 AM

Aside from the hype and deart h of useful ideas, social software has exposed some interesting trends that I didn't know existed. I know I'm not alone in this, but I'm fascinated by a trend that has been going on for about a year and shows no signs of stopping: Brazilians are dominating social software networks.

I guess it makes sense when you think about it. They've got a country with fairly free laws that promote creativity. While they're generally poor on a per capita basis, they have the largest online population in South America.

Recently, Orkut put them neck and neck with Americans on the system and new language tools were added so you could basically cruise the site entirely within groups that posted in just Brazilian Portuguese, or just English. Fotolog had the famous case of Brazilian cam girls competing neck and neck with American photographers last summer. I suspect even with pricing changes at Fotolog, the Brazilians won out in terms of membership numbers since then. Ever since Globo's Blogger install launched a couple years ago, the service has skyrocketed in user numbers. T his person claims Brazil is likely to be the second largest group of bloggers after Americans.

Thanks to the enthusiasm of Brazilian users and the democratic nature of these networks, you see Brazil outpacing the participation and number of Americans. The virtual world is relatively new and doesn't have many limitations beyond the obstacles of getting online in the first place, so the world is on an even playing field so to speak. I find it fascinating that in this new, more open, and more equal environment, Brazil is doing so well. I don't know what it means for the future of Brazil or America, both online and offline, but it's certainly an interesting trend worth watching.

3rd Wave Hits Atlanta

3rd Wave Hits Atlanta 02/10/2004 02:40 AM
3rd Wave, a provider of outsourced IT services for small- to medium-sized businesses in Atlanta, is building Wi-Fi networks without charge for venues around town as a way to drum up awareness of the company: So far, it has built hotspots in 12 venues and expects to have a total of 20 unwired by the end of next week. 3rd Wave doesn't charge for setup or ongoing maintenance and its only requirement is that the venues in turn offer the connection to customers free of charge. 3rd Wave listened to its workers who suggested that a coffee shop across the street from its offices set up a Wi-Fi network so they could work from the shop. When the store, part of a national chain, began offering Wi-Fi, it came with a fee that was too high for 3rd Wave workers' tastes. "So we sat down and thought, 'what if we wired up places like that?'" said Mike Landman, president of 3rd Wave. The company initially approached a few venues in town and started setting up networks, but since the word has gotten out, owners of coffee shops, bookstores, and restaurants are now coming to 3rd Wave asking for the free setup. Shops that offer the connection also set out table tents (self-standing flyers) that mention 3rd Wave. The gateway signup page that users see when they fire up their computers' browser for the first time on the network displays a 3rd Wave logo and a description of the company. 3rd Wave has a few requirements for which venues it will build the networks for. "They have to be retail with business traffic, so if you're in the sticks or only cater to 15 year olds we wouldn't offer it," Landman said. Some shops that have been denied have offered to pay 3rd Wave for the setup and ongoing maintenance. "So we're entertaining that idea," he said. Landman particularly targets venues nearby his offices. "We want to keep where we set them up close to where we are to build a sense of community," he said. 3rd Wave uses access points (APs) and software from Sputnik. That software lets 3rd Wave remotely reboot the AP and remotely determine what may be causing a problem. Landman credits the quality of the APs for the fact that his workers spend just 30 minutes setting up each network. 3rd Wave has committed to buying...

Free baby photo trojan gets new moms to

Free baby photo trojan gets new moms to
sell baby-privacy
04/04/2005 06:24 AM
Cory Doctorow: A friend of mine worked at Procter and Gamble when they hit on the idea of giving away baskets of baby-related freebies to new moms. The idea was that a couple days after the family went home and they needed more diapers, mom would send dad out with the package from the freebies and say, "More like these, please." It's pretty clever, and I'm cool with it -- especially now that the whole thing is handled through brokers who take products from a variety of vendors, with input from maternity wards.

That, I think, is a pretty good way of marketing to new families. It doesn't compromise privacy, it gives them something they need, and it doesn't force them or lock them in. It's informative, useful, and respectful (provided that the marketing makes it clear that there's no medical endorsement of these products).

Compare that to this: a service that sneakily gets moms to agree to a "free baby photo" while they're signing all their necessary medical forms on the morning of their delivery. The company that takes the picture then sells your contact info to anyone who'll buy it.

On the morning of the delivery, the nurse hands a sheaf of forms to the mother-to-be. Buried within is a release form offering a free portrait of the new baby. Mom is wired to three different machines, having her pulse and blood pressure measured automatically while two others sensors detect uterine contractions and the baby’s heart rate and another chattering electromechanical behemoth plots a seismograph of both...

...[T]he photo enterprise is run by a third party, Growing Family. They’ll shoot a picture of your munchkin, in exchange for his or her name and birthdate and your full name and address...

Growing Family will use your information from time to time to promote additional products, services, rewards and special offers from Growing Family Network and its select Network Partners.

Another friend of mine had his baby daughter die from crib-death a few weeks after she was born. For years afterward, he and his wife got a steady stream of marketing materials, including ghastly "birthday cards" from marketers who'd bought the information that they'd had a baby, but never received the message that the baby had died. Needless to say, when their next baby was born, they never, ever bought products from the companies that ghoulishly continued to market to their dead daughter. Link (via A Whole Lotta Nothing)

So it probably would have helped if I had looked up what the hell this event was supposed be about. I all I knew was that it was Hawaiian themed - something so recockulous it had to be worth going to - and that there would be Products there. Unfortunately, I had no idea what Products there would actually be, but as I'm sitting here, sipping Amstel, it's starting to look a lot like your typical technology journalism sausage fest that most of these product showcases turn into.

A whole roasted baby big just floated by at eye level, though, so that's something.
