Looks like the Computex internet cock-up has sussed itself out long enough for The Register to file this report profiling an eminently internetted sub-notebook from Taiwanese vendor Dialogue, branded the 'Flybook.' Not only does the Transmeta Crusoe-powered laptop sport WiFi (802.11b sadly) and optional Bluetooth, but there's even a built-in tri-band GPRS modem, as well. The 1024 x 600 8.9-inch screen would be "ideal for DVD playback if there was a built-in optical drive" notes The Reg's Tony Smith, but in a sub-notebook this size an external drive is fairly standard. The Flybook even has a touch-sensitive screen that can be flipped about like a Tablet PC, although it runs regular Windows XP. Looks like a great little notebook, and although there is no pricing information as of yet, you'll be able to pick up one in black, white, silver, red, or blue as soon as they find a Western vendor.

If an ultra-portable laptop/tablet with a SIM card slot -- yes, like those found normally in GSM mobile phones -- makes your gadget dork fluff up a bit, you might want to check out this review of the Dialogue Flybook -- the first English review I've seen. Besides being tiny, the best thing about the Flybook is its extra connectivity. Not only does it have the standard Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, but it also has GSM/GPRS capabilities (hence the SIM card) so that you can, in lieu of any other, faster connection, hop on your cellular carrier's GSM network and get internet wherever you are.

The Flybook technically isn't a handtop, but it's not too hefty, either, as you can see in the picture. It does look bigger than a DVD case, though -- no matter what Handtops.com says.

It's funny -- not 'haha' but 'heh' -- how over the last couple of months the FlipStartHQ has transmogrified into Handtops.com. Mostly, by my estimation, because the FlipStart is taking so damn long to come out. Still, if they weren't doing such a good job, we wouldn't keep linking them, and this profile of the Dialogue FlyBook, the super-connected ultra-portable laptop that probably presses the upper boundary between 'palmtop' and 'laptop' is as good as we've come to expect, without a ton of new information, necessarily, but a nice overview of the laptop that aims to make sure its users stay connected, hell or high water, or at least Bluetooth or GPRS (or WiFi or Modem or Ethernet).

According to a recent study by Current Analysis, unit sales of notebooks equipped with a widescreen 15.4-inch display have steadily continued to climb throughout the first half of 2004. As of June 30, the widescreen market accounted for 48% of all notebooks sold, compared to only 15% in December 2003. The growth represents the highest share yet for the widescreen models since its introduction in the spring of 2003 and demonstrates widescreen systems are selling in greater numbers than its traditional square counterparts. Apple finally went and released an inexpensive computer. With the advent of the Mac mini, some Windows and Linux users who have been curious about Mac OS X but turned off by Apple's high prices have finally bit the bullet and ordered a mini.

Trying an unfamiliar operating system can be irritating at times. Things are not where you expect them to be, the GUI is different, and connecting to servers and other PCs can be frustrating. Hence the mini-guide.

This is not intended to be a comprehensive guide to all things OS X. Its purpose is to help those new to the operating system do simple things, like use a Windows printer, connect to a network share, and figure out what the key with the funny-looking squiggle on it next to the spacebar does (or even use your PC keyboard with a Mac). So if you're an "adder" and are feeling a bit out of sorts, check out our guide.

I got T-Mobile to enable GPRS ("T-Mobile Internet") on my phone the other day. It works alright with the t68i and the PowerBook. I used Ross Barkman's "modem scripts". With the right script with the magic "use GPRS" commands I just had to choose the correct "CID" and enter "internet2.voicestream.com" as the phone number. I've played with my GPRS connection for a few days now. It really doesn't work very well at all, at least not here in Los Angeles or with my phone or with my usage. And yes, the phone is reporting decent coverage when GPRS doesn't quite work. Sometimes ssh works alright (with the ~1 second lag), but sadly it's not very consistent. Packet loss has occasionally been 20-30%, enough to combined with Other Factors make ssh not able to even...
