Rave-MP AMP 128 Flash Player Reviewed

Rave-MP AMP 128 Flash Player Reviewed 09/08/2004 10:24 AM

rave_amp128.jpg imageI used to hate flash memory players, but I'm coming around, and for one single reason: they're a commodity now. Being cheap - this Rave-MP AMP 128 reviewed by PCWorld is only $100, and will go for even less soon - means that I can keep a flash player around as a backup to a hard-disk player, something to take out into the rain maybe or throw in a bag that's going to get roughed around, and never give it a second thought. Plus 1GB SD cards a sickeningly cheap these days (sickening when you consider how much money you spent on flash memory in the past).

What sells the AMP 128 specifically, though? I dunno, really - the feature set on these things is almost exactly the same these days - but it does have that inverted-color display, which I saw in person a few weeks back, and is actually pretty cool.

Being a team player is one of the most important attributes you can bring to a job. Team players are open-minded; they see other points of view and are willing to help others in their efforts to achieve goals. How do you get it across in the interview that you are a team player without it taking away from your value as an individual? In this article, Medzilla offers insight about how to strike that balance of letting potential employers know that you are valuable as an individual and a team player. [PRWEB Sep 24, 2004]

Engadget: Sony’s Network Walkman NW-HD1 - the world’s smallest 20GB ATRAC3 player. "The Network Walkman is supposed to be able to get an astounding thirty hours of battery life on a single charge." Dell has been advertising "twice the battery life of iPod" on the radio lately, but the fast talk at the end of the commercial says they assume 64kbps files. Most people probably have 128kbps files on their iPods, so the Dell DJ probably accesses the hard disk half as often -- voila, twice the battery life. And if you use 48kbps audio, like Sony does, then you get three times the iPod's battery life -- around 30 hours. When everybody's using the same parts, the only way to get a 2x or 3x advantage is to cheat.

Rave for the Deaf

Rave for the Deaf 04/14/2004 10:31 AM
BoingBoing reader Charles Vestal says:
A East London dance club held an all-deaf rave, featuring signing-karaoke, deaf rap, a standup comdian, and all the pumping basslines they could handle. Problem was, the lights were flashing so much, no one could chat with each other at the bar. Perhaps they should hook up with this guy to get a more moving experience.

Rave-MP ARC and AMP MP3 Players

Rave-MP ARC and AMP MP3 Players 08/02/2004 02:08 PM

< img src="http://www.gizmodo.com/archives/images/govideo_ravemp.jpg" alt="govideo_ravemp.jpg image" width="116" height="200" border="0" align="right" vspace="5" hspace="15"/>Rave-MP is reentering the MP3 player market with at least two new units, the Rave-MP ARC [pictured] and the Rave-MP AMP, the former a hard disk-based player available in 2.5GB and 5GB versions, with the latter a less-interesting but still decent flash-based player. I had a chance to sit down with some of the folks from Rave-MP the other night and play around with both units, and they seem nice enough as far as that goes -- and the price is right, at $229 for the 5GB version -- but I can't really get past the fact that the ARC looks sort of lifeless. It looks a little better in person, but not by much.

Still, I think Go Video has some commitment to getting back into the game, so it will be interesting to see where they go from here. If they could release an ARC 2 with the same specs and a more stylish form factor, I think they'd take a nice bite of the market (especially if retails drop the price a little. $230 is a little too close to the iPod mini's $250.)

Silent rave with wireless headphones

Silent rave with wireless headphones 03/30/2005 04:33 AM
Cory Doctorow: UK's Glastonbury music festival will get around a late-night ban on loud bass by handing wireless headphones out to the attendees, producing a silent rave:
"I like the idea of people dancing in total silence," said Emily Eavis, one of the festival organisers and daughter of the founder Michael Eavis. "Imagine if you were feeling a bit worse for wear and thought, 'This would be a nice quiet place to sit down'.

"You would be completely freaked out to see 3000 people dancing in silence. It's certainly quirky, but our big push this year is keeping the noise down because that's what the council is keen on."
