Maths to bring e-commerce to its knees

Maths to bring e-commerce to its knees

Maths to bring e-commerce to its knees 09/07/2004 02:36 PM

As we speak, there is speculation amongst the maths community about one of its most cryptic questions. Why are prime numbers prime numbers? What defines there seemingly random pattern? The question is called the Riemann hypothesis, and a mathematician in France might have found the answer.

The Riemann hypothesis explains why a prime is a prime. For non mathematicians, a prime is a number divisible by only itself and one (list of the first 1000 primes). Although primes are interesting mathematical material, they are also key to internet cryptography. They ensure that data is safe when transmitted over the web to online stores like Amazon.

Louis de Branges, a French-born mathematician currently working in the US, claims to have proved the hypothesis. However, his colleagues are sceptical. The kicker is that whoever solves the problem wins a prize of a million dollars. Prof du Sautoy told UK paper The Guardian that "The proof he has announced is rather incomprehensible. Now mathematicians are less sure that the million has been won". Be sure that when mathematicians find it tough, the concept is pretty intense stuff.

Dr Delvin, when asked whether it had been proved, replied "We don't know. We have good reason to assume it has been and within the next 12 months, in the inner core of experts in differential geometry, which is the field we are speaking about, people will start to say, yes, OK, this looks right. But there is not going to be a golden moment."

Stay tuned; the effects could be massive.

Mom brought Google to its knees

Mom brought Google to its knees 07/30/2004 06:58 AM
This past Monday, July 26, Google was Unavailable to many if not most internet users. The cause was a virus named mydoom, which causes infected PCs to send spam, and in the case of this variant, went to Google and other search engines looking for email addresses to spam. Even the mighty Google couldn't handle the load. Mom called me a week ago. "I want you to take this firewall off of my computer."

Tristan Louis does some capacity calculations based on Google's S-1 filing.
An interesting tidbit coming out of the Google S-1 filing is that they have spent about $250 million on hardware equipment. From there, we can get a few guesses at the magnitude of the Google system. Based on quick back of the envelope calculations, it looks like Google is managing between 45,000 and 80,000 servers.

How Old Is E-Commerce?

How Old Is E-Commerce? 08/11/2004 01:37 PM
According to News.com, we're officially at the 10-year anniversary of electronic commerce, as defined by the first secure transaction on NetMarket, on August 11, 1994. The folks at the Internet Shopping Network disagree, claiming they started a few months earlier. Of course, it all depends on how you define "e-commerce." This article seems to define it as a secure, web-based transaction. However, even before these started showing up, I remember purchasing CDs from CDNow and CDConnection using telnet in either 1993 or early 1994, and I'm sure plenty of others could make claims to earlier "online" purchases. It certainly wasn't secure, but who was worried about security back then? Of course, it doesn't really matter when e-commerce really started, but it is amusing that no one seems to remember those pre-web offerings.

E-commerce = in-E-fficiency

E-commerce = in-E-fficiency 04/09/2004 04:11 PM

In buying tickets for movies, plays, and concerts lately I've noticed that it is always more expensive to buy tickets over the Internet than in-person and usually more expensive on the Web than on the phone.  If we assume that the prices reflect costs it turns out that it is cheaper to pay a human to sit in a booth all day and/or to pay a human to sit next to a phone all day than it is to write some Web scripts and keep a server running.

Given that the hardware folks have done their share and that bandwidth is cheaper than ever, this is a truly sad commentary on the continued stagnation in the world of software.  The great Internet pundits of the 1970s (and the folks who copied those predictions and spit them out as their own in the 1990s) predicted a world of seamless commerce and lower prices.  How wrong they were.

[Tickets for what you might ask?  Tonight is McCoy Tyner at the Charles Hotel ($3.50/ticket extra); Friday night is the Boston Symphony Orchestra ($10/order extra).  Last night was the Harold Pinter play The Birthday Party at Harvard's American Repertory Theater ($3.50/ticket + $1.50/order extra).  I'd give you my review of the play but this email review from a friend is much more to-the-point:

"I saw the Pinter on Sunday night, and all I can say is that it made the invasive gynecological procedure I had to have the next day seem pleasant in comparison."

I guess they won't be quoting her review in the advertisements...]

3D e-commerce is a pair of jeans seen from every angle. It is the ability to mix and match shoes, dresses, coats or belts; to explore the nooks and crannies of an entire home; and to capture the most realistic, detailed view possible. It is also entering the mainstream as companies strive to win consumers' hearts and pocketbooks. Are customers ready?
