Thanks to Thomas for this Link. For all of your programming buff's check this out.

"TinyP2P is a functional peer-to-peer file sharing application, written in fifteen lines of code, in the Python programming language. I wrote TinyP2P to illustrate the difficulty of regulating peer-to-peer applications. Peer-to-peer apps can be very simple, and any moderately skilled programmer can write one, so attempts to ban their creation would be fruitless."

width = str(len(str(len(lines)))) 02/10/2004 02:44 AM

The above monstrosity came up today while writing a function to add zero padded line numbers to a chunk of text:

def linenumbers(text):
    "Add zero padded line numbers to text"
    lines = text.split('\n')
    # Find the maximum 'width' of the line count
    width = str(len(str(len(lines))))
    for i, line in enumerate(lines):
        lines[i] = ("%0" + width  + "d. %s") % (i + 1, line)
    return '\n'.join(lines)

I think it has a pleasant kind of symmetry to it.

Cinergy plugs in as Web provider: I can't even comprehend how this works.

A unit of Cinergy Corp. today will become the nation's first electric utility to offer high-speed Internet service to customers via its power lines, turning every electrical outlet in homes or offices into a Web connection.

One of the problems with broadband is that cable companies have a virtual lock on the infrastructure necessary. Thank God the power companies can join in now, because they're so much more trustworthy.

Top Spam Subject Lines 01/02/2004 06:06 PM

AOL reveals top 10 spam subject lines of 2003: Here's a shocker.

Viagra. Lowest mortgage rates. Hot XXX action. As seen on Oprah. [...] Those four phrases and six more topped the list of the most commonly-used subject lines for junk, or "spam" e-mail in 2003, Internet service provider AOL said Wednesday.

And consider this:

During calendar 2003, AOL blocked nearly 500 billion spam messages from reaching user inboxes, an average of 40 fewer such messages per day per subscriber account. The company said it regularly blocks 75 percent to 80 percent of incoming mail as spam.

4 out of every 5 emails bound for AOL are spam. Crazy.

The Top 10 Enterprise IT Vendors have three year customer loyalty rates that range from 53% to 71% according to an extensive and independent study by the InterUnity Group. On average 2 out of 3 customers will evaluate replacement products in the next three years from these vendors. The study evaluated the loyalty of 1188 users of 10 leading IT Enterprise vendors including Computer Associates, Dell, EMC, Hewlett Packard, IBM, Microsoft, Oracle, Peoplesoft, SAP, and Sun.While customers may choose to continue to use the existing vendor after evaluating alternatives, pricing pressure is introduced. “Vendors who understand the drivers of customer loyalty can reduce customer defections and lower the cost of sales”, according to Richard Sneider, a Partner at the InterUnity Group. “ The Customer Loyalty ICSI is useful to purchasers as an indicator of how well a vendor will meet its needs over the long term.” [PRWEB Jun 23, 2004]

If you are too popular, jealous people are always saying behind your back that you are a compulsive schmoozer, or you are insecure, or insincere. Well PHP is an Open Source language that is widely popular on the web. However because PHP so popular in shared hosting environments, many people have an impression that PHP is only for small scale web-sites. This is patently untrue, and PHP is in use in many large scale web sites such as Yahoo Finance and for the creation of large web applications such as IMP. This article is an attempt to readdress the balance and show how PHP is used in the enterprise.

The End Of Enterprise Focused IM

The End Of Enterprise Focused IM 06/21/2004 06:51 PM
It looks like the major instant messaging players are now realizing that so-called "enterprise IM" wasn't making much sense. In the past few years, both AOL and Yahoo had announced enterprise-focused IM products that tried to build off the success of their free public IM products. The idea was that companies would need more secure instant messaging offerings, as well as transcript logging functionality for regulatory compliance. However, most people quickly realized that either those enterprise-only IM products didn't work with existing IM offerings (defeating the purpose of talking to anyone outside the office) or were simply too expensive for features that didn't seem worth the money (or that could be easily replicated in other ways). So, it's no real surprise to see both AOL and Yahoo basically drop out of the enterprise IM business. In both cases, it appears very few companies were impacted, because so few used the products they already offered.
