EU Council Plans to Scrap Parliamentary Vote without Discussion

2004/05/07

For immediate Release

The EU Council of Ministers is demonstrating that the concept of democracy is alien to the EU. This Wednesday, the Irish Presidency managed to secure a qualified majority for a counter-proposal to the software patents directive, with only a few countries - including Belgium and Germany - showing resistance. The new text proposes to discard all the amendments from the European which would limite patentability. Instead the lax language of the original Commission proposal is to be reinstated in its entirety, with direct patentability of computer programs, data structures and process descriptions added as icing on the cake. The proposal is now scheduled to be confirmed without discussion at a meeting of ministers on 17-18 May, unless one of the Member States changes its vote. In a remarkable sign of unity in times of imminent elections, members of the European Parliament from all groups across the political spectrum are condemning this blatant disrespect for democracy in Europe.

I think software patents are a bad American idea. Japan has followed the US and now Europe is planning to pass one of the worst versions software patent law discarding many of the amendments to limit its power without discussion. Although I'm for many types of patents, I think that software patents are generally bad and in particular hurt small companies and innovation.

Flat-Screen Makers Face Patent Lawsuits
in U.S.
03/14/2005 06:26 PM
Two industrial manufacturers, Guardian Industries Corp. and Honeywell International Inc., have sued dozens of companies in the global PC and video display businesses in a U.S. federal court to try to recoup royalties on liquid-crystal technology. Guardian Industries, a maker of industrial glass, and Honeywell, known for making weapons systems, assert in filings in the U.S. District Court in Delaware that their intellectual property for liquid crystal displays, used in notebook computers, TVs, and cellular phones, have been infringed.

Taiwan and South Korea are the two primary centers of LCD production, which is growing rapidly as demand for LCD-based televisions rises. The lawsuits target the LCD industry directly, but also assert claims against companies that incorporate LCDs into final electronic products. Jin Kim, the director LCD market research for research firm DisplaySearch, said the LCD business largely avoided patent lawsuits through its earlier years, but has attracted litigants as the business blossomed into a $40 billion market.

Broadcom Allowed to Say Microsoft in
Announcement
11/04/2003 10:57 AM
There's a careful dance done between mammoth partners and small companies as to when you can speak their name in a press release: Broadcom received the go ahead, as you can see, to state that Microsoft's new 802.11g home wireless products will use their chips. This was known for a while, but this is the first public announcement, and should be yet another boost for Broadcom. Microsoft's products, which I haven't had the chance to use in their previous or new incarnation yet, have the unique and much-praised distinction of encouraging users to turn on security and actually facilitating distributing the key (using a floppy disk, but, hey, whatever works) among computers on the network....

Wow: thi s one from Damien Barret:

"Color me not surprised. It appears that Microsoft is paying SCO to file all those ridiculous lawsuits against the users of Linux. I've seen low before, but this is pretty damn low. Scumsucking low."

I have no idea if any of that is true, but, it's truly sad that I could easily believe it's true... that's how much I trust the Microsoft corporate brand.

Microsoft targets 'phishing' with 117
new lawsuits
03/31/2005 03:24 PM
Microsoft Corp. says it is filing 117 lawsuits against unknown Internet site operators it charged were engaged in "phishing" schemes to obtain personal and financial information from unsuspecting consumers. The "John Doe" defendant lawsuits are to be filed in U.S. District Court in Washington state in an attempt to establish connections between worldwide phishers and discover the largest-volume operators. Officials are also warning consumers to be on the lookout for potential internet scams involving April Fool’s Day on Friday. Some scams are getting more and more sophisticated, some by including what looks like a legitimate Internet address link but once clicked on by the user, they are instead directed to a different, fraudulent site asking for personal information. Consumers are urged to be suspicious of unexpected e-mails seeking personal data, to not click on links in those e-mails, and verify contacts from institutions that claim a person is a victim of identity theft.
