Review: The Underground History of
American Education
07/28/2004 02:27 AMIn 1991 John Taylor Gatto was a thirty-year veteran of the New York
school system, and had been honored as both NYC and NY state Teacher
of the Year. Then, at the height of his career, he published a
provocative essay titled I Quit, I Think in the Wall Street Journal,
and shortly thereafter he did indeed quit. Nine years later Gatto
published The Underground History of American Education, a massively
researched exposition of his discontent with the education system.
Now he's made it available to read online, and it's an eye-opener.

Justine Cooper's photos of the American
Museum of Natural History
06/05/2005 11:42 PMDavid Pescovitz:
Justine Cooper was the first
artist-in-residence at the American Museum of Natural History in New
York City. During her residency, she explored the back passageways,
storage rooms, and specimen cases where the majority of the museum's
collection is stored. Cooper documented what she saw using a wood 4x5
view camera from 1910. Her huge photographs are a stunning testament
to the wonder and oddity of nature as we collect it. Cooper's show,
Saved By Science, at the Kashya Hildebrand gallery in New York closed
today, but much of the work can be viewed online. (Seen here: Trophies
| 30" x 39") From the press release and artist statement:
Sheer optical exuberance surfaces from a set of Graphium sarpedon
butterflies. In the Victorian attic a group of donated ex-Barnum &
Bailey, Ringling Brothers Circus seals, swathed in plastic wrap, await
their departure to climate-controlled storage. The 21st century liquid
nitrogen cooled frozen tissue collection holds a million specimens in
a room the size of a studio apartment. Immense corridors of locked
steel storage cabinets most powerfully express the veil of structure
dropped over the complexity of nature...
The photographs present the stored collections as both an evolution of
the collecting and storing process, and as an historical and
contemporary perspective on how we systematize and assign value to
nature.

What is it with the
London Underground and the
internet? As many MeFi posts have noted
before, no other
subway system in the world has quite as many websites and applications
devoted to it (why is this?). Until now the bulk of these applications
have been based around maps, but the 'tube' has just got an
independent site that is story-based. The brand new site at
www.yourstation.co.uk wants
you to write stories about the networks famous stations. Each gets its
own homepage, you fill it with stories or simply read those that have
gone before. Want to know how
Mudchute
got its name? You now know where to look.

David Pescovitz:
I'm disappointed that I missed catching a flick in a secret
cinema/restaurant below the streets of Paris. Police discovered the
theater--complete with electricity, CCTV security, and phone
lines--within an uncharted cavern in the city's 170 miles of tunnels
and caves. According to The Guardian, a full-size screen and projector
had been installed and police found "a wide variety of films,
including 1950s film noir classics and more recent thrillers." A
stocked bar and "pressure-cooker for making couscous" was also
discovered.
Three days later, when the police returned accompanied by
experts from the French electricity board to see where the power was
coming from, the phone and electricity lines had been cut and a note
was lying in the middle of the floor: "Do not," it said, "try to find
us."

Sometimes it is a totally obvious and simple idea that is the most
brilliant. Animals
on the Underground is just that sort of brilliant, simple idea.
Constellations of stars have been illustrated for centuries using the
connect the dots technique, but applying it to the underground station
map is clever and the animals are adorable. Maybe I'll dig out my
underground map and try to find a few new ones.

The London Underground is home to some of the most interesting,
weird and
fun adverts, which have been tailored to the fact that they have huge
posters that passengers are often looking at for minutes at a time
while waiting. In Copywriting goes Underground, they challenged ad
agencies to write an ad which had at least 50 words in it. Some are
crap, but some are pretty innovative -
check them

03/17/2005 03:47 AMToday at SXSW in Austin, WIRED music editor Eric Steurer,
red-hot remix artist DJ
Reset, and I talked on a panel about "Notes from the Underground:
The Rise of Remix Culture." As fits the subject, there was some very
good audience participation and back-and-forth, and Reset told some
good anecdotes about living on the bleeding edge of digital
creativity.

Area 51 Investigator goes underground!
Area 51 Investigator goes underground!
05/26/2004 05:57 AMI am a very proud and loyal American. I support the principles of
this country and would never do something that would put me under
Uncle Sam's scrutiny. As a citizen I pay taxes to Uncle Sam so that
my children and I sleep well at night knowing that the government is
watching our backs and doing the things that keep us on top of the
technology power curve. So I am not all sympathetic
when I hear about some knuckle head messing around with government
sensors out in the desert.
Everyone has seen the movies and heard the rumors about Area 51 and
I am sure their are a lot of people that would give their eye teeth to
visit the site. Uncle Sam has the area restricted for a reason and
that is good enough for me. When someone is out there digging up
sensors in my opinion that is bordering on treason. So I have no
qualms when someone messes with federal property
I would expect the FBI to find out if the individual is a curious
george or a foreign spy.
We all are entitled to our opinions and are responsible for our
actions. You are free to do a lot of things but people need to realize
their are consequences to actions such as this. [The
