Denon ARC-8000 AV Rack

Denon ARC-8000 AV Rack 08/19/2004 07:12 PM

denon_screen.jpg imageWhen size matters, Denon's new AV rack with a deployable 80-inch screen should suit your fancy. Weighing in at 319 pounds, the "ARC-8000" is completely integrated - there is no need for hanging hardware. I'm not entirely sure how you get a 80" screen to go up in the air on its own, but I can assume some sort of steel bar needs to be put in place.

It may cost 472,500 yen, but hey, that's nothing compared to the cost of the projector you need to buy to go with this.

Those Free AOL Minutes Don't Help When
You Rack Up $3,400 In Long Distance

Those Free AOL Minutes Don't Help When
You Rack Up $3,400 In Long Distance
04/19/2004 03:09 PM
A New Hampshire resident was upset that his AOL dialup kept kicking him offline, so he ran AOL's AutoFix program, which he said fixed the problem. He also says that the program (without him realizing it) changed the dialup phone number to a long distance toll number - something he only realized wh en a $3,400 phone bill arrived. AOL claims that it's not their problem, saying that the AutoFix program doesn't change the phone number, so that couldn't be the problem. However, now the New Hampshire Attorney General is stepping in to ask AOL to go to mediation to settle this issue - even though the actual bill is due to Verizon. It sounds like more details are needed, but now that the press is covering the story in a way that makes AOL look bad, expect them to change their tune and play nice.

StorageTek's new tape rack: same size,
double capacity

StorageTek's new tape rack: same size,
double capacity
07/01/2004 10:29 AM
Storage Technology Corp. (StorageTek) has produced a new 100TB tape library that slots into a standard rack size but provides twice as much capacity as competing products. The StreamLine (SL) 500 is a 30 to 577 slot rack-mount tape library that supports the Hewlett-Packard Co., IBM Corp., and Seagate Technology LLC linear tape open (LTO) format and, soon, DEC/Quantum Super Digital Linear Tape (SDLT) format. It can have Fibre Channel or SCSI connectivity and offers capacity on demand. Additional drives or slots are delivered and enabled by an electronic key. The SL500 main advantage though is its capacity -- at 90 slots per square foot, it is far denser than ADIC's Scalar 100 with 36 slots/sq ft, or Overland's Neo family with 40 slots/sq ft.StorageTek believes customers want rack-based and modular libraries in the mid-range area. Standard racks fit in their data centers and in-rack expansion with a single controller/robotics module preserves reliability whilst providing scalability. (Robotics and other components can be duelled for increased reliability.)The SL500 is an intrinsic part of its Information Lifecycle Management (ILM) strategy, the company said. It may have additional functionality offered in the future as part of this, such as a disk cache or virtual tape system. It is positioned below the SL8500, a much larger library with 1,000 to 300,000-plus slots and up to 2,043 drives. The SL500 also comes in a smaller deskside cabinet with 2 drives and 30-50 slots. The SL500, like the SL8500, can have any tape format in any slot; partitioning is logical rather than physical.StorageTek said that competing Quantum M Series and Overland Storage Inc.'s Neo are monolithic because expansion adds more components and decreases reliability and, eventually needs a cabinet change.Sun Microsystems Inc., which already resells the SL8500, "will evaluate the SL500," according to Christopher Jones, Sun's EMEA business manager for networked storage. Sun and StorageTek also announced a much expanded partnership, going beyond the existing OEM relationship. Jon Benson, StorageTek's general manager for its automated tape solutions group, expects that its high-end Powderhorn libraries will eventually be replaced by the Streamline line and that a low-end Streamline model will be introduced. No end-of-plan exists for Powderhorn though and availability throughout 2005 was confirmed.BRM software was also announced which monitors backup status from servers, across the SAN, and on to StorageTek tape libraries such as the L Series and StreamLine family. There are indications that StorageTek may announce a NAS product, possibly later this year and enter the content-addressed or object storage space. The SL500 will become available later this year, possibly Q4, when its price will be announced. With just two basic components, controller and slot/drive modules, don't expect premium pricing.

NYC Marathon 2005

NYC Marathon 2005 12/19/2004 03:21 PM
I finished the NYRR Holiday Four Mile Run (38:31) this morning and with it completed nine qualifying NYRR races, which means: I've got guaranteed entry into the 2005 NYC Marathon. Yay! As I said to my friend Adriana this morning after the race, "Obviously something's wrong with us if we're waking up to run in 32° weather every weekend for the purpose of gaining entry into a marathon!" Of course, I mean "wrong" in the good sense! I've already got two marathons and one half-marathon scheduled for 2005. Now let's hope my hip injury heals in time.

Marathon Strikes 10 12/27/2004 01:22 AM
Marathon, a classic Mac FPS which was said to have rivaled the Doom series, reached its tenth anniversary this week. The official game has been long dead since Microsoft purchased Bungie, but a thriving community has enhanced the popular title and kept it up-to-date. This year, celebrate Marathon's tenth anniversary by playing Marathon: Aleph One. If you don't currently own a copy of the original game, don't forget to download the demo files as well (available on the Aleph One page).

Quick announcement:

Anne had lots of Marathon stuff written up (we compose everything offline in Textedit) and the fucking computer locked up. Like a bonehead, I'd forgotten to save it (along with some other important stuff) so it was lost.

I tried cashing in all my computer geek points to resurrect it, but it was DC 45, and all I got was a modified 8.

So that's been set back at least a few days. We both know how many of you guys who supported us and Kris are looking forward to the story wrapping up, but I hope you'll bear with us a little bit longer while our Real Lives take up most of our attention.
