Netflix + TiVo: Done
Netflix + TiVo: Done
09/07/2004 03:08 AM
Back in January, we had discussed that coming convergence of TV and
movies in the video-on-demand space and discussed the somewhat obvious
connection of
TiVo +
Netflix. It appears that the management of both of those
companies has figured it out as well, as Newsweek has the "high level
sources" rumor mill spinning about
TiVo and
Netflix teaming up to offer a combined movies-on-demand service.
While the details aren't there, this does make a lot of sense for both
companies, who each need to differentiate themselves from the growing
competition within their space. Both have built up great brand names,
and extraordinarily loyal followings, but are now facing strong
competition from more established players with huge wallets. A
combined solution that let users download movies directly to their
TiVo (and, even better, take them "on the go" with TiVoToGo) has
tremendous potential and would keep them a step ahead of the
competition for now. Still, it remains to be seen exactly how they
implement this solution. If it's not done well, it could be damaging
to the reputation of both companies, while taking attention away from
their existing solutions. It's also unclear if there will be
exclusivity in this relationship, or if both players will be able to
team up with others as well.

Netflix And TiVo? Perfect Together
Netflix And TiVo? Perfect Together
01/27/2004 01:44 PMA long, but interesting,
look at
Netflix's business. The article points out, accurately, that
Netflix is going to be a strong competitor for any online "video on
demand" outfit - as they basically are a video on demand outfit that
just takes a bit longer to deliver - but comes with much more freedom
for the end user. However, the company clearly realizes that their
biggest threat doesn't appear to be the recent copycat attempts by
folks like Wal-Mart and Blockbuster, but the future of video on
demand. Unlike most companies that miss the boat on disruptive
technologies, Netflix is already trying to figure out how they'll
compete in that space as the technology gets better. They haven't
given up much in the way of details, but are working on tests of video
on demand systems they can offer as an option - allowing for a gradual
transition when (if!) people want their movies delivered over the
internet. At the end, the article makes one interesting prediction:
Netflix and TiVo should team up to offer some sort of combined
solution. The article doesn't specifically discuss what that solution
should be, but it could make a lot of sense. Offering up an easy way
to "download" the video of your choice to your TiVo could be fairly
compelling.

TiVo and Netflix to Partner for

09/06/2004 04:33 PMHey, guys. I'm sort of taking the day off from news - finishing up
some freelance and doing a lot of behind-the-scenes catch up for
Gizmodo - but this was just too interesting not to talk about.
Newsweek is reporting that TiVo and NetFlix are planning on releasing
a system that would allow subscribers of both services to download
movies and television programs directly to their TiVos over broadband.
There's no confirmation from the companies yet, but this could be
huge. If they could figure out a way to let us take TiVoToGo
onto mobile media devices, we could finally have an all-you-can-eat,
legal video download option.

Netflix and TiVo teaming up to bring
rental videos on demand
09/07/2004 04:57 AMThe majority of us that have cable or a dish have the capability to
do pay for view. I have always been very disappointed with pay for
view offerings, thus we rent video's on a regular basis. The wife also
gets them from the library which is the best deal in town. But now
Tivo and Netflix are proposing a deal where you can rent a video from
Netflix and have it downloaded directly into your TiVo via your
broadband connection.
This is a very smart move. I am sure the MPAA will be bitching
along with the broadband providers who are going to forced to adsorb
the extra bandwidth that this would create. [MSNBC]

Proxim, Intel Join Forces on WiMax
06/17/2004 07:25 PMProxim and Intel will work together on WiMax, a boon to Proxim: The
smaller company's stock shot up 27 percent today on the news that it
would be participating in what Intel has increasingly focused on as
the next important wireless market. WiMax has the potential to offer
point-to-point and mobile standardized broadband wireless service, but
its time to market is still a concern. If it doesn't achieve
productization quicklly enough--and signs are that we might not see
unlicensed WiMax products in the US until 2006--existing somewhat
proprietary solutions could commoditize quickly enough for the market.
Meanwhile, higher-speed cell data offerings might take the sheen off
the necessity of mobile WiMax, although the latter's potential for
using unlicensed bands gives it an edge. SkyPilot's announcement
today--after a few years of development--of their broadband wireless
system adds another player to a tightly focused market that hopes to
fill in the home and business broadband market. Their equipment works
in the unlicensed 5.8 GHz band. Although the press release says that
Proxim expects to ship fixed broadband equipment in early 2005 and
"portable" (not mobile) devices later next year, it doesn't state
whether these will be shipped in the US or overseas, nor which bands
will be used....
