Sounds that go bump 07/15/2004 10:41 AM

We're sorry to inform the passengers of Flight 905 that the situation is FUBAR

So our plane's wing hit the wing of another plane on the ground, so we never left. I won't be back until late tomorrow, and I won't make my panel, or anything, at AlwaysOn. Regrets and apologies, folks. Major bummer.
And I don't have much more time than to thank Euan for the bluetooth/cellphone bridge that's making this post possible. And the fine company for one sleepy, grumpy passenger.

[Doc Searls]

Ouch - I hate it when my plane gets into an accident. I slept late today - so I'm gonna miss Rob Glaser's keybote. I'm sure he won't mind.

But then I'll get there in time to ask him about new business models in media. Oh boy.

Maybe we can talk about the time when Rob was still at Microsoft and he licensed the Director player - and then..... discovered our real strategy (cross-platform functionality) and never shipped the player with Windows 3.1.

It was supposed to be called .mmm.

The whole world would have had the Director player from Windows 3.1 on, but instead.... it never happened.

Your company sure sounds like a great place -- but what does it really sound like?

Cellular sounds

Cellular sounds 04/15/2004 01:10 PM
What do cells sound like? Nanotech pioneer Jim Gimzewski and grad student Andrew Pelling are using the tiny tip of an atomic force microscope like the needle of a record player to pick up a cell's sound-generating vibrations. Gimzewski has named the fieled "sonocytology." From a Smithsonian Magazine article about the research:
"The distance the cell wall moves determines the amplitude, or volume, of the sound wave, and the speed of the up-and-down movement is its frequency, or pitch. Though the volume of the yeast cell sound was far too low to be heard, Gimzewski says its frequency was theoretically within the range of human hearing. 'So all we're doing is turning up the volume,' he adds."

benq.gifThis is a story about the unintended consequences of a business decision. Siemens handed their phone division over to BenQ, and now folks like Lite-On—who make just about every optical drive in the entire world—and Quanta Computer are stuck with dead orders, scrambling to make ends meet. It's a trickle-down economy out there, folks.

Some of the smaller companies are even merging with each other just to stay afloat. I'm wondering what happened when IBM sold out to Lenovo. I'll bet an entire Pacific Rim island sank.

Kerry sounds viable

Kerry sounds viable 03/06/2004 01:59 AM
I listened to Kerry's victory speech last night and was impressed. Perhaps because he's an opportunist (yeah, this is going to be a left-handed compliment at best), he has absorbed the best messages from the other candidates. I thought his rhetoric and the set of issues he propounded were right on. (I wish the Internet and innovation were on his radar screen, but that's my own little "special interest.") I just hope that he hasn't peaked. All three Boston Globe columnists today worry that his shallowness will be exposed over the long term. Why is he running, other than to...

A Talking Robot that Sounds Human

A Talking Robot that Sounds Human 04/13/2005 11:17 AM
Roland Piquepaille writes, "The Takanishi Laboratory, at Waseda University, Japan, is home for many robotic projects, including a flutist robot. Today, let's look at a talking robot, the Waseda Talker No. 4, or WT-4. This anthropomorphic talking robot was built to better understand how the human vocal mechanism creates speech. The WT-4 has 19 degrees of freedom (DOF) for lungs, vocal cords, tongue, lips, teeth, nasal cavity and soft palate. With its vocal cords, it can produce Japanese vowels that sound similar to human ones. The next version, the WT-5, will have even more sophisticated vocal cords." For more on the WT-4 and WT-5 robots see Roland's latest blog entry.
