Continuing with the USB memory news today is MIB and their
"Wakeup+" alarm clock. The Wakeup+ really isn't the first time we've
seen an alarm clock that supports playback of MP3, but it may be the
first time we've seen it done right. It supports the USB
On-The-Go standard, so you can plug USB memory devices right into the
port found on the reverse of the unit. MIB has also confirmed the
clock to work with the iPod mini and iPod shuffle.

Alarm clock that hides
03/29/2005 08:54 PMDavid Pescovitz:
Clocky is an alarm clock that hides when you hit its snooze button. It
was developed by Gauri Nanda at the MIT Media Lab. From the project
description:
When the alarm clock
goes off and the snooze button is pressed, Clocky will roll off the
bedside table and wheel away, bumping mindlessly into objects on the
floor until it eventually finds a spot to rest. Minutes later, when
the alarm sounds again, the sleeper must get up out of bed and search
for Clocky. This ensures that the person is fully awake before turning
it off. Small wheels that are concealed by Clocky's shag enable it to
move and reposition itself, and an internal processor helps it find a
new hiding spot every day.
I don't like being told when to wake up but I've come to terms with
the idea that I have to. In designing Clocky, I was in part inspired
by kittens I've had that would bite my toes every morning.

Classic, modern style. Smooth, refined form. Oh, and
possibly the most obnoxious feature set possible in an alarm clock
(aside from a clock that actually flees away from you): You must complete a
jigsaw puzzle to deactivate the alarm. No cord to cut, since
it's battery operated, and "recommended for ages 3 or

family-oriented, award-winning weblog that it is,
I'm disinclined to tell you what I first thought the Clocky looked
like. On closer inspection, that's carpet, although Gauri Nanda
might've done better with a more vibrant color. Regardless, Clocky
rolls off your nightstand, bounces off your startled dog and finds a
new place to hide once you press the snooze button. Maybe one day,
we'll have an alarm clock that just crawls on your chest and wets
itself. We can dream, can't we?

I'd say my chances of getting a hold of a
Dutch-designed clock from an out-of-stock Korean vendor are pretty
slim, but that doesn't make me want this Kikkerland "Motion Flip Alarm
Clock" any less. My grandparents had a flip-clock when I was growing
up that I was captivated by - and Groundhog Day is less a movie
for me and more of a religious experience - so it pleases me no end to
know that someone is still designing interesting ones.

Hilton
Hotels are rolling out new radio alarm clocks to their rooms, complete
with a line-in jack for plugging in your MP3 player. In addition, the
new units are supposed to be a lot easier to set yourself, and can
wake you up with the sound of one of four pre-set radio stations
instead of the jarring clang of the hotel wake-up call (although, I
sort of like that, especially when the friendly robot calls).
Of course, it'd be cooler if the clock could wake you up with
your music, but that would probably morph into 'iPod only.'
Line-in is the future!

04/15/2005 04:53 AMCory Doctorow:
The difference between being woken from a dream and woken from light
sleep is the difference between a rotten wake up and an easy one --
for me at least. I have long dreamt (heh) of an alarm clock that is
smart enough to tell the difference, and now I've found one:
The clock, called SleepSmart, measures your sleep cycle, and waits for
you to be in your lightest phase of sleep before rousing you. Its
makers say that should ensure you wake up feeling refreshed every
morning.

Now You Can Sell Your Music On iTunes
Now You Can Sell Your Music On iTunes
04/09/2004 04:00 PM(HOLLYWOOD) - Independent artists and labels will be glad to learn
that they dont have to be distributed by a major label to get a
distribution contract with the iTunes Music Store, now revolutionizing
music sales with millions of dollars in downloads.
But finding out how to do it was often a painful and time-consuming
process - until now.

I used the iTunes Music Store for
the first time today. I actually didn't want to install it, but Apple
is bundling it with QuickTime these days, so
you have to get one to get the other. Then my wife, Annie, heard
about it, and she wanted to try it.
It was a great experience. It's pretty much a matter of creating
an account, finding a song, then clicking "Buy Song." You can even
surpress the "Do you really want this song?" warning so you can just
click with wild abandon, racking up $0.99 charges right and left.
The real test came when I taught Annie how to use it (because, you
know, you can never have enough Celine Dion). She took to it
right away. The search has a spellcheck feature, which is handy when
trying to spell "Alanis Morrissette," and the idea of double-clicking
a song to hear a clip is very intutive. Annie doesn't know the names
of any of the songs she likes, but she knows what they sound like, so
she just kept double-clicking until she heard what she wanted, then
she hit "Buy Song."
The only glitch we ran into was that we first fired it up under my
Windows account, logging into iTunes as Annie. Now, when we open
iTunes under Annie's Windows account, again logging in to iTunes under
her account, none of the "Purchased Music" we bought under my Windows
account is there. For some reason, the purchased music is tied to a
specific Windows account, not an iTunes account. I'm not quite sure
what to do about this — if you know, drop me a line.
Some music isn't available as single tracks, for some reason. For
instance, Annie wanted a song off the De-lovely soundtrack,
but it was marked "Album Only." Depressing, but I'm sure there's some
high-powered business reason for it.
We haven't tryed burning anything to a CD yet, but when I do, I'll
let you all know how it goes. Hats off to Apple — iTunes is a
great piece of work.
