Holy Vandals, Holy Grail
Holy Vandals, Holy Grail
05/21/2004 11:17 AMAn historic monument in central England that may hold the key to the
location of the Holy Grail was damaged by vandals on Tuesday. The BBC
reports that "a gang of youths climbed on top of The Shepherd's
Monument at Shugborough Hall" and started smashing away.
"The Shepherd's Monument is of international importance,
both as a work of art and because of the legend that a baffling
inscription on the monument provides clues to the true location of the
Holy Grail," said the home's general manager Richard Kemp.
Interestingly, the vandalism came on the heels of a visit by former
code-breakers from War II intent on cracking the 10-letter puzzle. The
Shepherd's Monument is discussed in depth in the book
Holy
Blood, Holy Grail, inspiration for The Da Vinci Code.

Disconnecting The Holy Grail
Disconnecting The Holy Grail
06/30/2004 07:19 PMLast week, we wrote about the
fight
for the "triple play" of voice, video and data to the home over a
single wide pipe. At the time, I wondered whether or not the cable
companies and telcos were a little too focused on the "to the home"
part -- and ignoring how wireless might matter. Over at TheFeature,
I've tried to explore this idea in further detail and look at
how the move
to a wireless world may take some of the thunder away from the triple
play battle. The triple play is still important, but it may now
need to be an anywhere, anytime to any device kind of triple play,
rather than a fat pipe connected to your home.

Looking For The Holy Grail In Online
Gaming
05/19/2004 12:03 PMFor all the talk about all of these new online worlds that companies
have been rushing out, none have really been living up to a few of the
early success like EverQuest. Even then, while there is a strong
EverQuest community, it hasn't been as big of a success as some
traditional offline video games. While many companies quickly jumped
into the space, they're now realizing that
they may
have hit a wall in growing the market. While new games are trying
to appeal to a different market, none have been that successful so
far. The problem with most online games is that they're community
based and, as such, the community needs to keep playing. That makes
it difficult for the "casual" gamer to take part. If they don't login
for a few days, they're way behind everyone they were playing with.
Meanwhile, there's still the stigma attached to online games of it
basically being the online version of nerd camp - taking the old ideas
of Dungeons and Dragons and placing them online. This isn't
particularly appealing to the less-nerdy set - even in times when
being considered a geek isn't quite so bad as it once was. Some are
hoping that online sports games may change things - especially since
it will involve more time specific games. Sports games have a start
and an end, and the world doesn't continue moving all of the time.
The games that are simulating a real world have the problem that, just
like the real world, they never seem to stop. At this point, it's
still quite early to write off the entire space. Someone will come
out of nowhere with an online game that doesn't fit into any of these
categories and catches on like wildfire. Just like "reality TV"
caught on out of nowhere in the TV realm, we'll suddenly have hundreds
of online games that no one expected.

Maths to bring e-commerce to its knees
Maths to bring e-commerce to its knees
09/07/2004 02:36 PMAs we speak, there is speculation amongst the maths community about
one of its most cryptic questions. Why are prime numbers prime
numbers? What defines there seemingly random pattern? The question is
called the
Riemann hypothesis, and a mathematician in France
might have found the answer.
The Riemann hypothesis explains why a prime is a prime. For non
mathematicians, a prime is a number divisible by only itself and one
(
list of the first 1000 primes). Although primes
are interesting mathematical material, they are also
key
to internet cryptography. They ensure that data is safe when
transmitted over the web to online stores like Amazon.
Louis de Branges, a French-born mathematician currently working in the
US, claims to have proved the hypothesis. However, his colleagues are
sceptical. The kicker is that whoever solves the problem wins a prize
of a million dollars. Prof du Sautoy told UK paper The Guardian that
"The proof he has announced is rather incomprehensible. Now
mathematicians are less sure that the million has been won". Be
sure that when mathematicians find it tough, the concept is pretty
intense stuff.
Dr Delvin, when asked whether it had been proved, replied "We
don't know. We have good reason to assume it has been and within the
next 12 months, in the inner core of experts in differential geometry,
which is the field we are speaking about, people will start to say,
yes, OK, this looks right. But there is not going to be a golden
moment."
Stay tuned; the effects could be massive.

Holy Bestseller, Holy Sequel
Holy Bestseller, Holy Sequel
05/20/2004 11:37 AMThe Da Vinci Code author Dan Brown says he considered including
another theory in the book that would have inflamed Christians even
more than the notion that Jesus married Mary Magdalene and made
babies. What if Jesus
survived the crucifixion? According to this AP Article,
"Brown said the theory is backed by a number of 'very credible
sources,' but that he ultimately decided it was too flimsy." I'm
burned out on the whole
Holy
Blood, Holy Grail trip though. Brown's next book, set in
Washington, revolves around the Masons! Apparently, the dust jacket of
The Da Vinci Code contains a clue about the sequel.
