Nokia N-Gage QD Review 06/11/2004 09:40 AM

ngage06-lrg.jpg imageWe've all given Nokia a break with the launch of the N-Gage QD. I mean, they fixed Sidetalkin', added a longer-lasting battery, they dropped extraneous features like stereo sound ... wait, whaa happan? Digital Lifestyles has the first of a three-part review up, focusing on the hardware of the QD and while it seems like a perfectly capable Series 60 phone (much like the first N-Gage), I just don't know what in the hell Nokia is doing anymore. The way to gaming console success probably isn't to make a device that people might sort of be interested in if it's free.

A thought about the Nokia N-Gage

A thought about the Nokia N-Gage 10/29/2003 04:59 PM

After playing with an N-Gage, I think sidetalkin.com is freakin' hillarious. One thought on this sidetalking thing, though:

At least it keeps the screen from getting all schmutzed. My Treo 300 screen gets absolutely filthy, due to me pressing the slab up against my head to talk. Also, there seems to be a defect in the LCD developing, which seems to have something to do with, again, being pressed up against my face.

In most other ways, this thing looks to be a flop... but the sidetalking thing might just not be such a bad idea.

Rumor Control: Nokia N-Gage Not Being
Pulled From Stores
08/04/2004 09:57 AM

http://www.gizmodo.com/archives/images/ngage_qd1.jpg imageSo a rumor has been going around that Electronics Boutique had been instructed to pull the Nokia N-Gage QD, the updated version of the ill-fated original N-Gage. Shipping units back to the factory is never good; however, it's not nearly as bad as some are letting on (N-Gage being pulled completely from market entirely, etc.). According to our sources inside EB (the guy I called and asked), the first shipment of N-Gage QDs with T-Mobile service had a somewhat convoluted sign-up process on the phone -- convoluted enough that many people couldn't get their accounts activated. The first batch was shipped back, updated with easier sign-up software (like later models already had), and shipped back to the ElBos for sale.

So yeah, not the end of the world. I'm sort of disappointed, too. (Not that I hate the QD -- it's actually sort of nice -- but I lament any lost opportunity to pick on N-Gage.)

It seems that every recent story about Atari has been about their attempts (in their modern form -- quite different from the original Atari) to make a killing on the nostalgia market, offering up classic games from years back to today's adults -- either on computers or (increasingly) on mobile phones. However, it appears that many feel the basic concepts of old Atari videogames are still valuable for game designers to learn -- resulting in a competition to design new games for the Atari 2600. Of course, there's one twist: the games needed to be created in 24 hours. While the story is amusing to read, what it really does is remind people that, despite all the amazing graphics found in today's game, a game is still about gameplay at its core -- which many of today's game designers seem to forget.

More Video Games Designed To Help The
Children
04/15/2005 04:49 AM
Whatever happened to the days when video games were the root of all evil to be purged from polite society? It seems like the video games are fighting back and trying to come across as being... well... wholesome. First we had video games to make kids thin (and help save on health insurance), then there were video games to teach kids about world hunger, and now comes a game designed to teach kids about how dangerous that big internet really is. Using George Jetson (George Jetson?!?) and other pop-culture characters (um, from what decade?), apparently the game is designed to teach these kids how to "identify spam, delete viruses and identify suspicious people in chat rooms." While these are definitely important lessons for kids to learn, you have to wonder how much this game is actually going to help. This sounds like the type of idea that an adult thinks a kid will like, but the kids will wonder what those adults are thinking... and go right back to writing their own viruses and sending out spam to enhance their allowance money.

Are Video Games Good For Kids?

Are Video Games Good For Kids? 08/11/2004 05:30 PM
While it does seem that the anti-videogame folks blow the danger of video games way out of proportion, a new festival seems to be going in the other direction by claimin g video games are good for kids. It's such a broad statement that it has to be untrue. Certainly, some video games might be good for kids, in helping them deal with differe nt kinds of challenges, but it hardly seems like random anecdotal evidence (about all that's presented in the article) proves that video gaming is "good." For example, the article includes this sentence: "Dr Judy Robertson, of Edinburgh University, said some children had told her during computer games workshops that playing violent games did not result in violence in real life." Just because some kids say something doesn't necessarily make it true (even if it probably is true). If they really want to show this, wouldn't it make more sense to actually promotes the ways that video games can be helpful to kids, rather than just declaring it so? I'm all for real studies that show the positive impact games have for kids, but hyping up something without substance just makes the arguments seem weak.

Cell Phone Directory

Cell Phone Directory 07/28/2004 04:28 PM

Cell phone directory gets hoots, hollers: This seems like a no-brainer to me.

The days of searching in vain for someone's cell phone number are almost over. Starting early next year, you'll be able to call directory assistance to get a mobile number.

However, some people object:

"These devices are considered much more personal than landline (phones)," says Chris Hoofnagle of the Electronic Privacy Information Center. "People tend to carry them everywhere and answer them when they ring."

What's more, cell phone subscribers pay for incoming calls, even unwanted ones.

Such concerns prompted Verizon Wireless, the No. 1 wireless company, to keep its 40 million subscribers out of the directory.

Isn't it interesting how cell phones have made phone numbers personal? A phone number used to be associated with a family ot a business — a group of people. But now, everyone in my family can have a cell phone, and therefore a phone number associated with them personally.
