Online music selling like hotcakes

Online music selling like hotcakes 05/06/2004 01:03 PM

Apple just announced they sold 3.3 million songs in 7 days on the iTunes Music Store. To put this in perspective, the entire top ten of the Billboard music chart is tracking just over 2 million units. If anyone in the music industry doubted that people would ever want to pay for music online, Apple's recent sales explosion clearly points out that it's here to stay.

Are There Any Companies Not Selling
Music Online?

Are There Any Companies Not Selling
Music Online?
11/05/2003 12:01 PM
Well, the floodgates have opened on setting up downloadable music stores, and they're not going to shut any time soon. Late yesterday came the news that MTV was launching a music download store, and today you can add Wal-Mart to the list. Of course, with each of these companies coming up with their own applications (sometimes compe ting with each other) and different, non-compatible formats, you have to wonder if this makes sense. If they all at least agreed on a format, and the ability to play the songs on any software or device (mp3s anyone?) it would make sense. Unfortunately, there are greedy executives who are drooling over the potential of "locking in" customers of any music service - and forgetting that their customers want the ability to do what they want with music they've purchased. Having a hundred different download stores, each with different software and/or formats doesn't help anyone, and will lead to plenty of failed music ventures. In the meantime, when will the price war start?

Latest Online Meme: Selling Your Ability
To Party

Latest Online Meme: Selling Your Ability
To Party
11/10/2003 11:00 PM
Let's see... Flashmobs are dead and buried. Online begging has reached the pointless stage (a book has already been written!). It's time for a new overhyped web-meme to flood the world. It looks like we've got a strong candidate in a bunch of women using eBay to sell their own presence (and a case of beer) to liven up any party. After a ton of publicity, they managed to get a top bid of 25,050 euros (about $40,700). The women admit that they believe the winner is a company looking to use the party for publicity, realizing that the media is likely to show up. Meanwhile, like any such web-meme, others are jumping on the bandwagon and trying to sell their own ability to party. However, like most such things, the ones who do it first are the only ones likely to generate enough publicity to make it worthwhile. Though, if it catches on even slightly, I'm sure we'll be seeing plenty of articles about the "trend".
