OnTime Power-Over-Ethernet Clock
OnTime Power-Over-Ethernet Clock
04/05/2005 11:30 AM
I
sort of understand why this simple 'OnTime' digital clock is $200. It
operates on only power-over-Ethernet and syncs up with any SNTP
(Simple Network Time Protocol) server it can find on the network. And
it's designed to be seen from over 150 feet away, so we're talking
about something that would live in a data center, not your house.
But why hasn't someone made one for our houses? Regular Ethernet
has some power over it—surely it's enough to drive a
simple clock and some SNTP firmware. I send this idea blindly to the
internet, like a A.O. Spare sigil, and await its return. I will still
expect the usual 15 percent conceptual licensing fee.

Aruba Introduces Ethernet Jack APs
Aruba Introduces Ethernet Jack APs
08/30/2004 05:36 PMAruba Networks introduced a new line of products including an access
point that can be mounted on the wall and plugged into any Ethernet
port: The idea is to cut deployment costs but also encourage a denser
deployment of APs. "We went into large accounts and they said they
wanted to put up large deployments but they couldn't even if we gave
them the APs for free," said David Callisch, an Aruba Networks
spokesman. Those enterprises complained that the cost and process of
hiring workers that have to climb ladders to install access points in
the ceiling was too cumbersome. They also said that they wanted good
coverage but were so reluctant to hang enough APs because of how
difficult the process is that it defeated the point of building a
WLAN. Based on such customer feedback, Aruba built APs that can be
plugged directly into an Ethernet port. "It takes two minutes to
install," Callisch said. The APs draw power over Ethernet and
communicate with a centralized Aruba switch. Networks built with the
new APs will require two to three times as many APs as conventional
WLANs. The additional APs will focus on a smaller coverage area, thus
serving a smaller number of clients. The APs constantly communicate
with the switch which in turn tunes the network for the best
performance. "It's a model that looks like the Ethernet network,"
Callisch said. He said the architecture can also be ideal for location
tracking applications. Because the networks will require more APs,
Aruba has also introduced a new pricing scheme. Customers pay $200 per
AP per year. The cost includes service and support and Aruba will
replace APs that fail as part of the yearly fee. "When you're putting
them in the ceiling, you're trying to deploy sparsely because of the
cost. Now you can put them wherever there's an open Ethernet port," he
said. Aruba also announced today a deal with Ortronics. Ortronics will
build Aruba APs into Ethernet jacks. Companies that may be re-wiring
buildings or builders of new construction can use the Ethernet jacks
to hardwire the APs into the facility....

Flat network cables aren't anything
new, but I'm pretty sure ones like this are. Japanese accessory king
Elecom today announced the "LD-VAPF/SV05" network cabling, coming in
at 1.4mm thick. With such a thin cable, you can run it pretty much
anywhere you like; I guess it would work particularly well under
carpet, in doorways, or as a new type of karate belt. The Cat5
standard cables support up to 1000BASE-T, and are reinforced with
aluminium.

Ethernet Switches Will Encompass WLAN
Ethernet Switches Will Encompass WLAN
04/13/2005 11:20 AM In-Stat says that WLAN switches will become more prevalent, but not
as stand-alone devices: As Mobile Pipeline explains it, Ethernet
switches will increasingly incorporate WLAN functions making the use
of thin access points (most radio intelligence) a given but the
centralized functions won't require specialized hardware. The article
specifically notes that Aruba and Trapeze may face difficulties on
their own; Airespace was acquired by Cisco. There's another course for
Aruba and Trapeze and similar companies to take, one that I think
we're seeing the early directions toward. Instead of selling
centralized hardware and specialized APs, move to centralized software
that runs on commodity PCs that integrators and VARs can configure.
The value would move entirely to the switching software. Aruba and
Trapeze's SLAPP proposal is one step in that direction for removing
specialized requirements from APs; the next step would be to agree on
a standard featureset with extensions that could loaded by individual
switches....

Corinex
is hoping there are still a few networking situations out there where
wireless won't do, but you can be arsed to run Ethernet. Its AV
Powerline Ethernet Adapter uses your powerlines as the cable, based on
the new HomePNA 2.0 specification that can supposedly hit 200Mbit/sec
transfer rates. That's all well and good, except that Trusted Reviews
found real-world rates of around 20Mbit/sec, which is about you can
expect to get from 802.11g on a bad day, and doesn't hold a
candle to proper Ethernet. At around $130 per unit (and you'll need to
buy one for each power socket you intend to turn into an Ethernet
port) it doesn't sound like much of a value.
