Pew Admits They Falsely Pumped Up
Podcasting Just For Fun
04/05/2005 06:50 AMLike many people, when the headlines started flying around this
morning saying that six million American adults listened to podcasts,
it seemed like a questionable number. The folks at the Pew Internet
and American Life Project tend to come out with pretty interesting
studies that don't often seem overhyped -- but this appears to be an
exception that really calls into question what the Pew people were
thinking. It didn't take long for many to
ques
tion the findings, noting that it's quite an extrapolation to go
from 60 people answering yes to six million in the US. Amazingly,
even the
folks at Pew admit they don't believe the 6 million number.
They only put out the press release about it -- why should they have
to believe it, or even support it with the facts in their survey? In
fact, the research director behind the study clarifies (after the
fact, of course) that the study actually asked people: "if they had
ever downloaded a podcast or radio Internet program." So, out of 200
people, they got 60 to admit that they had maybe at some point
downloaded an internet radio program (which is not necessarily the
same thing as podcasting) -- and from that they put out a report with
the
headline that "6 million American adults have listened to
podcasts." Why bother doing actual research any more when all the
attention is in made up numbers?

How to get falsely blacklisted for
running an open spam relay
07/06/2004 08:08 AMIt's easy. Just sign up with an ISP that issues dynamic IP addresses.
That's how I got on several email "black hole" lists meant to stop
spam, even though I don't spam and my system has never operated as an
open relay. If you use an ISP that doesn't give you a stable IP
address, you may be on one or more spam blacklists, too -- and you may
not necessarily know it. Then comes the fun part: Getting off those
lists can be a lot harder than getting on them.

Xeni Jardin:
The Department of Justice has opened a criminal investigation and is
demanding records related to an indymedia.org post which expressed
anti-RNC sentiment and listed the names of some 2,200 individual RNC
delegates. More on indymedia's site
here<
/a>, and here's a snip from a related ACLU pre
ss release:
In a letter sent today in response to a grand jury subpoena issued by
the Secret Service, the American Civil Liberties Union and the New
York Civil Liberties Union said they are representing a web hosting
service and administrators of an independent media website regarding
the anonymous posting of publicly available information about
delegates to the Republican National Convention. The groups said the
investigation is but the latest example of government agencies using
law enforcement powers to chill free speech and intimidate protesters.
(...) Beeson added that the posting did not include anything remotely
threatening, but involved political speech fully protected by the
First Amendment.

Buildings In About 12 Hours
Buildings In About 12 Hours
03/17/2005 03:52 AM
Bringing me back to the
days when I used to play C&C: Red Alert, a few engineers in London
have devised a way to quickly erect cement structures in the field.
The "building in a bag" is essentially "a sack of cement-impregnated
fabric" that, with a little air and water, inflates into a
Nissen-shaped structure that dries and is ready for use in twelve
hours. Meant to act as a stronger solution than a tent while remaining
at least relatively portable, a 500-pound sack will inflate to form a
structure with 172 square feet of floor space. At only $2,100, "the
volume of the sack controls the water-to-cement ratio," so you don't
need to fuss with hard-to-read measuring cups while trying to build a
new mess hall. Wired has the full story and a diagram of the building
process.

03/15/2003 05:14 PM http://www.Breadhours.org A
group of over 300 residents and merchants in California’s Bay Area
has established a local currency called BREAD (a rough acronym for Bay
Area Regional Exchange and Development), based on hours of work valued
at $12 an hour. Through the BREAD network, which now has over $20,000
worth of currency in circulation, members can pay for dinner,
carpentry, childcare, tutoring, clerical assistance or organic
produce. Tired of traditional activism, founder Miyoko Sakashita
wanted to create a positive local economy and “stop our resources
from supporting global corporations that are not accountable to people
and the environment.” Check it out at Breadhours.org
First 24 hours in Japan
First 24 hours in Japan
08/09/2004 07:37 AMMy first 24 hours in Japan included the following:
- a soak in a traditional Japanese public bath
- a swim in a 25-yard pool
- a visit to an enormous Buddhist temple complex that has been an
important pilgrimage site for hundreds of years
- a semi-traditional tea ceremony
- walking around three koi ponds
- a meal in a restaurant that has been in the same family and at the
same location for more than 300 years
All this without leaving Narita, the town in which Tokyo's
international airport is located!
